Well, I'd like to know Andrew's take on the author...since it's from the "rival" UCR site, just curious if he has any thoughts on the writer.

It looks like he has at least one interview with Jonathan to draw from. Hopefully there is more. This bit about "corporate rock" was good. It missed one key point though. There was an article, I think in Rolling Stone, where that term was used - maybe for the first time. It said something about being able to take the musicians from Journey, REO, and Styx, and mix them up into three different bands and nobody would know the difference. It shows that negative label was a broad swipe at an entire generation of music, and Journey was a part of that. Also, it was the fans the voted Journey into the HOF...and Journey is lucky to be there. If it were up to the nominating commission as a whole, I doubt Journey would have ever made it...because of the above bias. That should have been noted because it gave the impression that it was the HOF that made the decision to honor Journey - it wasn't, it was the fan vote that did it.

It will be interesting to read what people think of this...if he has other interviews besides Jonathan to draw from. He should at least get Neal. Perry is a long shot, but maybe, depending on if he wants to deal with it. Too bad Herbie isn't around to tell it like it is any longer.

Actually, Monker, the fan vote is for show. It guarantees nothing. Although the hall would be even dumber if they ignored it.

From the article....

"..... features dozens of interviews with key contributors including Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Jonathan Cain, Steve Smith, Deen Castronovo, Steve Augeri and others. Among those offering wider perspective are collaborators like John Waite, Prairie Prince, Jeff Scott Soto, Marco Mendoza and Jan Hammer, as well as stalwart road manager Pat Morrow, former 'Rolling Stone' contributing editor David Wild, original MTV VJ Martha Quinn, album-cover artist Stanley Mouse, and Joel Selvin, the longtime San Francisco music writer who covered Journey almost from the beginning."

Hard to tell, but so far as I've paged through the book, every quote came from somewhere else, like newspaper articles and radio interviews. I haven't see anywhere that says there were direct interviews. But of course I haven't read this mammoth of a book cover to cover yet. In fact, the bibliography for the quotes, in tiny print, is 13 pages long. There are no "Thank You's" to the band members, which I would expect if they were interviewed directly. Anyway, that's just a hot take. I'm definitely curious if there are new quotes in there. Either way, it's an extensive book that covers the history, as well as a lot of the other bands members have played with.

That is not what I understand when I read the site and posted about this on the Styx page. If you read the info on their site for the fan vote, there is nothing that makes it seem to me that it is just for show, at least as far as I can tell. It seems more like a "hush puppy" to help stop certain critiques.

Apparently some of my interviews are referenced. And no, I don’t think there is any original content as such.

No opinion other than this.

Thank you...that is kind of what I thought.

I recall a DJ on SiriusXM continually lobbying for people to vote for the Foo Fighters when they were nominated in 2021. They made it sound like the fan vote made a difference. No idea though. My gut tells me the powers in the Hall are so arrogant that they make the ultimate call.

I want to make a public apology to the author Nick. He sent me the info for the book and I simply did not read the PR. I'm flat out running my music shop all day these days, so have minimal time to process a lot of incoming press info.

BUT, I got it very wrong. The book has as many as 30 original exclusive interviews in it, including Cain, Deen and Greg Rolie.

On that basis alone it would be very worth checking out.

Sorry Nick and best of luck with the book.

This is not made clear in the book at all.

Looking at the bibliography, there are many recent interviews mentioned, interviews that appear to be with the author, so I'd say yes. It just didn't come off that way at all. I would have expected to see some thanks or acknowledgements to the band members that contributed. In any case, it's a lot of info.

However, no mention of Fan Asylum or Lora and that's a big minus in my book. Otherwise, it appears very comprehensive. I'm still on the Santana years, so...

Bottom line - Looks to be a pretty great book.

From Erica Banas, Rick Music Reporter: “The “Fans’ Ballot” will comprise the top five artists from the fan vote. It will be counted among the other ballots that various artists, historians, and music industry professionals fill out.”

So the Fan Ballot is equal to ONE vote.

My internet had been out since December 22, so I haven't been able to get on here until just now.

I bought the new Journey book. I highly recommend buying the book, it's totally worth it in my opinion!!! Sure, most of us already know most of what's said in the book, but there are still things that many of us might not have known either.

Possible Spoilers..............

I'll say this one brief thing right now..... Steve Perry is a mammoth ASSHOLE!!! I love the guys singing and songwriting. He's one of the best singers of all time without a doubt. But he is a piece of shit.

Andrew: Melodic Rock is mentioned many. many times in the book. I'm 80% through the book and your site is constantly mentioned. There are also references made to Deano and the Tapegate discussions that were taking place on here at that time.

I'll mention some other things in the book when I have time. But I don't want to post so much stuff that the author would be angry were posted. I do highly recommend the book!

Plus, I don't want to spoil things for those who want to read the book and find them out through the book.

I'm now about 85% through the book.

Sounds like Andrew, Lula, and others are owed a cut of the book sales.

The book is roughly 400 pages long. I'm almost 52 years old and my short-term memory now sucks. As soon as I read new things from the book I start to forget other things that I read that I would mention.

Are there any specific things that people want me to mention that are said in the book, certain topics?

The book goes into great detail about what all of Steve Perry's demands were from Schon and Cain when they replaced him in Journey. If everything in the book is true, Perry's making more money from each Journey tour than the band is making. Or at least in the beginning anyway.

Strictly speaking of quality of people separate from music, Perry and Carlos Santana do not come off well at all in the book, if true? Perry comes off as being a petty little brat who tried to screw over the band in many ways, mostly from ROR and later. There is plenty of praising of Perry's singing talent though.

Any objective person should now know that Journey were 100% justified in continuing on without Perry, after they read the book. I always knew that, but now everyone should.

It would appear that Herbie Herbert never liked Kevin Chalfant on a personal level and didn't really want him to be in Journey.

Jeremey Hunsicker: You probably know this already, but you are quoted in the book.

JSS is also mentioned and quoted in the book.

Jeremey and JSS do come off well as people. Not that I ever thought differently.

There are a couple of mentions of JSS possibly not being a great fit as far as range is concerned, but that's the only negative said about him. There are positive things said about his talent too.

Schon mentions Jeremey being scary similar to Perry singing wise.

I didn't read this book, but Herbie advocated for Kevin in alot of Journey-related interviews (including the one Andrew did). And I know Kevin was at Herbie's birthday parties. I just find this hard to believe.

Quoting a paragraph in the book:

There were brief hints that Storm front man Kevin Chalfant might be brought into a reformulated Journey lineup including Rolie, Neal Schon, and Jonathan Cain. That concerned Herbert, who appreciated Chalfant's talent but felt "He was too much like Perry," Herbert told Matthew Carty. "He would have been a problem child just like Perry was."
