It Could Have Been You 2024 - Lukather and Perry

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Thu May 02, 2024 1:39 am

From Perry's social media....

In 1986 the Journey “Raised on Radio” record was released and in it was a song I’ve always felt was a diamond in the rough.

I’ve known Trevor Lukather since he was 9 years old and he is a very gifted musician. One day we were talking about his new band, The Effect… He surprisingly mentioned “It Could Have Been You” is one of his favorite tracks from that record, I told him I felt the same.

I then said, why don’t you record it? He asked if I would sing on it if they did, I said... “Of course my most precious!” I must say, singing on their powerful track brought out a vocal experience in me from years ago !

So now... Releasing on May 7th on all social’s and streaming is a very powerful reimagined version of,

“It Could Have Been You” by... The Effect.

Have a listen!

-Sincerely, Steve Perry

From Trev Lukather's social media......

Steve and I go way back. Other than my Pop, SP has been a mentor to me. When he heard The Effect, he called me and expressed how much he really loved what we were doing. It meant the world. On that same call, I started raving about a deep cut Journey tune “It Could Have Been You”

The idea came up about The Effect doing our own version of it. I asked SP if he would sing on it and he said yes.

Even though we were done with our album, it was just too good of an idea to pass up. The guys felt the same. Any chance to work with my dear brotha Steve is one I’ll happily take.

I built up the production with Emmett’s lead vocal to really present to him our vision of what we had in mind. Steve came by the studio while we were tracking drums. I’ll forever bottle up his first reaction after the playback.

His excitement that we could resurrect an overlooked Journey song with new life obviously connected to the pipes because Steve came in the next day and shook the house with his vocal performance. I think our neighbors thought it was the Northridge earthquake all over again.

The power of Steve’s vocals is on another level. One of a kind. That’s why he’s the GOAT.

Thank you SP for not only for the honor, but for your belief in us and what we do. That is never taken for granted!

I agree, but several artists I respect (JSS, Deen, etc.) have gone on his "show."
Augeri was supposed to, but so far hasn't (good for SA!).

I have discussed this with JSS.

Huge disappointment.

If you're going to bring in a legend to sing on one of your songs, then let him be clearly heard. Give him a couple of verses on his own.

What if he didn’t want a verse? His backing soulful harmonies are all over the track.

Come on fella,

You don't think that if Perry wanted to sing a verse on his own they wouldn't let him? Perry could have said he wanted to sing it all and they would have probably happily obliged. This is the same with nearly everything Perry has done for the past however many decades, he just liked the add a bit of flavour into the songs (even though im sure we would all want more)

My God, I thought his background vocals were virtually identical to the original record even if they were mixed slightly differently. Really, really great. Can't wait to hear his next record given the singing in this song. Sounds like his voice is in great shape and he has been using it.

Can barely hear Perry in the mix. Feels like a cheap attempt to generate PR for a band I would otherwise never heard of, nor cared to. Trev, consider me suckered and disappointed.

So much for that "earthquake" of a vocal performance from Perry. He can barely be heard. Talk about slaughtering a soulful original piece of music.

The hype was definitely misleading on this one. I was able to hear a lot of his soulful background singing, much more than what I could hear on a lot of the other recent songs that he contributed to.

It would be nice to hear these songs that he has contributed to with his voice stripped out of it so that we could really get an understanding and appreciation of what he is delivering to the songs, although I know this would be almost impossible.

Wait for the "Steve Perry Remix" where nothing will be left but some synths and his voice.

I'm sure that they would have let him sing some solo verses if he had wanted to.

But why even bother if what he did do was all that he was going to do?

For the most part, yes.

I don't hate the performance, but Perry is barely heard in it. I had high hopes about this remake with Perry and the claims about how great he sounds on it. I was left incredibly disappointed.

One of my favorite Journey songs. I was really looking forward to hearing Lukather's remake, and hopefully a resurrection of the song, but I can't love this. I especially don't like the dead stop at 2:26. It's like a skip in the album. Maybe it will grow on me. Probably not.

I don't hate it but I think they oversold it a little. I wasn't expecting Perry to be front and center or sing a verse but I didn't think his harmonies would be buried so far in the back of the mix that you could barely make out his voice.

Cain apparently thought Perry sounds like million bucks but I don't know how he could hear Perry's voice well enough to figure that out.
