Herbie's chosen pick to replace Perry, Kevin Chalfant (The Storm, Two Fires, 707, Shooting Star, Dennis DeYoung), singing Journey / The Storm on 10/05/24.

All these years later, he still sounds good. I don't care what anyone says, as much as I like Augeri, Cain/Schon royally fudged up not going with KC.

Kevin Chalfant was also the second choice for Survivor in 1984 when they hired Jimi Jamison. They were just about ready to offer Chalfant the job in Survivor when Jamison auditioned and won the job. I'm glad that they hired Jamison, but Chalfant would have been great too!!!

I thought HH was the one to say KC was difficult to work with, implying he would not fit.

He might have said that in the Castles Burning interview, but he was still advocating for him. In fact, in one of his last interviews on this very website with Andrew, he was still making the case for Kevin.

On Augeri....

"I never understood why they went with him. They could have gone with Kevin Chalfant."

On JSS and the then nascent Arnel lineup...

"Kevin Chalfant would have been a much better choice at that point. Kevin Chalfant would be a much better point now. I don't know."

Here are a couple of YT clips of Kevin Chalfant performing with Jimi Jamison, and in one case also Jim Peterik.

Thank you, TNC, for sending me down the Storm rabbit hole. I really enjoyed that band. Saw them in Philly in '92. Was disappointed not to see Smith with them, but that all went away when they started playing. I was really hoping for the Chalfant led Journey while Perry continued on his solo path. I think we would have gotten much better music from both camps for a while.

This has been talked about here before. I believe what Herbie said was that he could see the same type of dynamic developing with KC as happened with Perry because KC would fight for himself and his ideas. In other words, he would not just roll over and do whatever Neal and Jonathan wanted. I don't remember the exact context of that comment but I think it was making a comparison to Augeri and his 'nice guy' demeanor...and that seemed to be more what Neal and Jonathan wanted at that time.

What I don't think Herbie was saying is that KC was not a good fit for Journey or that he would have been a 'bad' choice to replace Perry after TBF.

All true, but it is also in the context of Herbie making the case for Neal and the Augeri lineup at the time.

Herbie also said (paraphrasing) that SA was "slightly disadvantaged in the talent department" but "was a better overall citizen" than KC. Flash forward to 2008, in interviews like here on MR, Herbie was basically disavowing that support and saying it should have been Kevin.

I will try to dig up the actual quotes later.

You are very much welcome. Kevin will remain the one that got away. It's a shame.

Also want to say thank you for putting the Storm out here. Saw them live at the Illinois State Fair and got to meet Rolie, which will always go down as one of my all time great moments.

It's a lot of fun to listen to them again.

For anyone who doesn't know (or remember) Mickey Thomas took some Arrival cuts and used them on his Over the Edge album.

Here are some:
Surrender (Schon/Blades): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-i4xGt9a4wk
One World (Schon/Blades): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KklpB5Q ... rt_radio=1
Eyes Wide Open (Cain): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeKOU6qr6RE

And here he is covering DSB:

Most of this should have found its way onto a proper follow-up to Arrival. Would have helped Generations.

Yup.

Plus the two songs that ended up on Jack Blades solo effort:
To Touch the Sky: (Blades/Schon) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNuZVEo_zV8
Sea of Emotions: (Blades/Schon) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKpoA5sIxBI

And this, which ended up on Cain's solo, and Augeri complements vocally:
Lose Myself in you: (Cain/Bazilian) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bD_AsdrmcU

Take all of those and Red13 and Generations and pick the best 12 and its very, very solid. They were creative as hell during the Arrival era. Where did I lose your love from Revelation was from that time, too.

I'll be the lone voice in the wilderness, here. Never understood the worship of KC, either from this forum or Herbie. I don't hear any of the range or the soul required for the Journey catalogue, at least in the YouTube clips provided. I do have The Storm CD somewhere and quite certain I never played it more than once.

You have previously said that vocal coach fraud, Ken Tamplin, should replace Arnel. So you'll forgive me if I don't take your opinion seriously.

Kevin had the range and the soul and then some.

Yeah, I don't get it either. KC has more soul than Arnel does, IMO.

I can imagine Perry doing this back around the Street Talk days:

And, no soul or range? Come on now:

Great tracks.

For me, Kevin and Steve are similar in that they both have a proven track record of carving out their own sound and creating their own vocal experience. What you hear in their songs is a reflection of them.

IMO, Arnel is a tremendous singer and has done a stellar job of following the Journey blueprint that was given to him. I don't know enough of his own material to say otherwise. No disrespect to him. He has represented the catalogue better than most could ever do.

Kevin, like Steve, would have been more of a creative force.

Kevin is great, but he would not have been the right personality type for that band.

Augeri and Arnel seem to be fairly submissive and don't rock the boat. Do you think their personality types have served this band creatively? Do you think Jeff isn't there because he, like Kevin and Perry, has strong views / convictions? Just wondering.

I have always been a huge Kevin Chalfant fan. He should have the first replacement for Perry.
