Least Favorite Journey Song

The title is self explanatory, enough.

I'll go first.....

My least favorite Journey song is "Back Talk" from Frontiers.

Yours?

Dishonorable mentions: "Once you Love Somebody" from ROR & "Live & Breathe" from Arrival. I know quite a few fans swear by "Live & Breathe" and state it's a modern Journey classic, but, frankly, the song does very little for me.

Pretty much anything from Red 13. Never liked the ep and probably never will.

Admittedly, State of Grace, Walking Away from the Edge & The Time are not your instantly recognizable, sing-along synthesizer-ladden Journey fare, but still, didn't you at least like "I Can Breathe"?

See, the reason why I don't particulalrly care for that song's inclusion on the EP (and why I think you probably WOULD like it) is because it doesn't fit in with the rest. The other threee are all so so unconventional whilst "I Ca Breathe" sounds too soft and poppy and much too like vintage Frontiers-era Journey to me. Kinda sticks out like a sore thumb.

Would've made a nice addition to "Arrival" though.

:?: hmmmm...I never could stand Open Arms...way too sappy! (the chicks always disagree with me on this one  ;) )

I could have done without All The Way and Nothin' Comes Close from ARRIVAL. ATW is (to me) a very predictable (safe) Journey ballad, hand picked by Sony, no doubt and NCC sounds too much like a Bad English leftover, in my opinion.

"All the Way" is so bad it is embarrassing....

"Live and Breathe" ..... I cringe at the very end of the song when they are singing their "yeah, yeah, yeahs...." Sounds like he hit a bad note and wouldn't let go of it. Sorry - just not a fan of this one particular song.

Well, it took me 15 years to appreciate "Back Talk"... it's still at the bottom of my list. "Castles Burning" is another difficult to enjoy song. It's definitely MUCH better live than on TBF

Exactly. That pretty much encapsulates my feelings on the song, as well. Very nicely put.

If you'll note; Augeri has top writing credits on that particular track. On all the other songs his name is relegated to the tail-end (like so;- "Schon/Cain/Augeri"). This one he is listed at the forefront; ("Augeri/Cain/Schon"). I think this one song (and this purely conjecture on my part) was his personal pet project for the album. I think it was his way of communicating his feelings to the Journey fans and introducing himself to them. Take a look at the lyrics, "there in the sky spins a wheel giving me the feeling that my dream came true today". Note how he seemingly is expressing gratitude & humility for something ("feeling that my dream came true today"). Call me crazy, but more than likely he is referring to landing the once in a lifetime gig of singing w/ one of the greatest bands in history.
Also, in the lyrics, note his intentional citing of previous Journey works by saying, "there in the sky spins a wheel.." clearly he is citing a popular, well-liked Journey song from the past ("wheel in the sky") as a means of paying the utmost respect to the band's catalog and to ensure the fans that he will always respect the illustrious history, and will try to always uphold the same musical quality of what has come before.
Clearly, this song was written with the most pure & heartfelt of intentions. I don't know how much time he spent composing it and polishing it, but unfortunately this "love letter" to the fans still is is one of my least favs.

However, let's not relentlessly trash Augeri.
I think he is an AMAZING showman in concert and is alot of fun to behold.
Oh, and he's not all that bad of a singer, either (he has his good days and his bad).
I am a big fan of "Tall Stories", as well. I think there isn't a single bad track on there. Maybe I am giving the man too much credit, but I like to believe Augeri had a big hand in those songs' conception. If we're to believe Augeri was the key songwriter for "Tall Stories" than it is also safe to assume that yes, he CAN write and YES, without doubt, he CAN and WILL bring a great, influential writing talent to this band that will forever distinguish his sound from that of the "other guy" & leave a distinctive mark on his time within the group.
In fact, I think we can already see burgeoning signs of it on Red 13.
Only the next album will tell for sure.

DANGIT!!! You took MY choice!!!

heehee......

Hmmmmm......let's see:

Well, I heard the unreleased song from TBF, "I Can See It In Your Eyes"

....and I SWEAR TO GOD - IMO, Steve sounded like Elmer Fudd!!!

Only heard it once; that was QUITE ENOUGH for me, thank you very much....

It's def. one of Journey's harder rocking songs. But, unlike State of Grace or The Time, it's still sounds alot like classic vintage Journey. Kinda like "Edge of the Blade". Still sounds like the Journey we all know and love...only harder.
Just played the tune as recently as today actually. LOVE that song. Has my favorite Neal solo of all time. He shreds the guitar in the end in a way I have never dreamed imaginable. Even better than his "World Gone Wild" end solo, if that's possible. Sorry you don't like it. I guess it just goes to show why Kalodner decided to take the track off the US TBF cd release, some people always prefer the soft ballads to the rockers. I don't hear the Elmer Fudd thing at all. But, to each his own.
If anybody wants a copy, just email me.

OK...the "Elmer Fudd" thing was a low blow; sorry....

That's not really it, anyway....I was trying to put my finger on what it is - and this is what I
came up with:

IMO Steve's vocals sounded like they were on "auto-pilot" - like he was going thru the motions of recording a "vintage Journey" song....very uninspired....and that was a real shock to me.

"TBF" was so different than anything else they tried, IMO (except "Dream After Dream"), with the strings and all....it's GREAT that they tried something new, but it just wasn't my cup of tea....and I NEVER thought I'd say that about ANY Classic Journey project.

I am so done with Open Arms. I also never liked When You Love a Woman. But Journey at their worst is better than Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake, etc., etc. at their best.

"Live and Breathe" came out of an intro that the guys played before "Wheel in the Sky" during the Vacation's Over Tour in 98/99, thus the citing of Wheel and the similar sounds. They performed the intro version at the 2000 Vegas show that became the 2001 DVD, but alas, that part was cut out of the final production. IMO, it works better live.

My least favorite of MY Journey(w/StevePerry)is "I Can See It in Your Eyes". I don't like anything with Greg Rollie on lead vocals, I just don't like his voice, or anything after TBF.

Now I do like alot of what TBF offered...There are some songs that I play more than others...Also there's something alittle special (IMO) about hearing their music from 78-80...Plus I also love alot of the music from the Escape, Frontiers, and Raised on Radio as well..

BackTalk reeked big time, and

When You Love a Woman, which was ALL Perry and NO Journey.

The only reason it hit the charts was because Journey had not been heard of in a decade.

It died out as quickly as it came.

any Journey song with an organ....I like Greg Rollie but there is somthing about that organ music that just does not go with my thoughts of a rock n roll band. well, unless you are Billy Preston and it's the blues. were they like trying to be a blues band at that time. thumbs down!

You guys are going to have to listen to the first three albums by Journey to find their worst song ever. In addition, I'm glad to share that I like "When You Love a Woman."

Disagree. I think Neal's solo really aids in making the song what it is. It's one of my fav. solos actually.
I agree that the song is slightly overated, but I still think it's right up there with other classic Journey ballads (or at least damn close).

The organ is a Hammond B3. And you can't get a more rock n'roll keyboard than that. Ask Deep Purple. You'd rather have a synthesizer???

This should cause some backlash, but i've always disliked "Mother Father"!!

I by no means think its Journey's worst song, as there are many from the early years that I don't like but this is definately one i generally skip.

You are not alone in your disliking of that song.

I have been a fan for 25 years and i still can not appreciate 'Mother Father' the way others do. I don't know what it is about the song, but i just simply don't like it much at all.
