Steve Perry of Journey, where art thou?
The new TV show called Glee (and the American Idol tour) has sparked searches for "Steve Perry of Journey" anew -- and reports say Steve Perry has been very generous about licensing his music for the show.
Rumors are circulating that Steve Perry from the famous Journey band may make an appearance on the show.
Indeed, when this episode of Glee at minute 20 played Steve Perry's famous "nah nah nah nah" chorus on the Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' song during a scene where a Glee character discovers his singing voice as a young boy -- from a man who leaves the boy's mother for a blonde girl at the Pick and Save -- searches from young viewers ensued, asking Google "Who sings that song?"
Steve Perry of Journey, Please Come to Glee
Fans of the highly-recognizable, top-favorite voice that grew to a crescendo in the '80s, enhanced by heartfelt lyrics like "He took the midnight train going anywhere..." really miss the original Steve Perry of Journey.
The Steve Perry online website reports that Perry is "happily enjoying his retirement" and gives links to the latest news about the magnificent vocal maestro, including Perry's comments about Michael Jackson's untimely death.
And yet.
Fans are still waiting with open arms for the voice that can never be replicated by Journey tribute bands.
Indeed, 40-year-olds (like this reporter) who experienced the magic that is the crooning wail of Steve Perry's Journey singing of his beloved "city by the bay" as the soundtrack to our high school years will not stop believing that we will hear that voice again, perhaps fronting for Journey once more.
Alas, Wikipedia quotes Steve Perry's 2001 VH1 Behind the Music statement as saying he never really felt like he was a part of the band Journey.
So maybe dreams of hearing Steve Perry intoning the finger-wagging, revengeful yet happy "Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah" again live in front of his Journey band are as slim as Jodi Watley reuniting with Shalamar.
But don't stop believing. Because while Journey tours with the Journey name and still garners good reviews, some Steve Perry fans will still hold out for the man himself, and not the Journey band without him:
"some Steve Perry fans will still hold out for the man himself, and not the Journey band without him".......no shit!
