Not everyone is a fan of the We Are the World Remake

Postby Ftloperry » Tue Feb 16, 2010 12:49 pm

Seems the critics and Jay-Z are not fond of the We Are The World Remake.

http://omg.yahoo.com/news/jay-z-we-are-the-world-shouldn-t-have-been-remade/35888?nc

Jay-Z wasn't a big fan of the "We Are the World" remake, which debuted at the Olympic opening ceremonies Friday to benefit Haiti earthquake relief.

"I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: 'We Are the World,' I love it, and I understand the point and think it's great. But I think 'We Are the World' is like [Michael Jackson's] 'Thriller' to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched," Jay-Z told MTVNews.com Saturday night at the 2 Kings dinner in Dallas.

Critics agree with the rapper. Sniped The Washington Post of the song, which featured Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, "The updated take was horribly oversung... save for the 21st-century rap verses added toward the end of the track." Wrote the New York Times, "Lil Wayne, you're no Bob Dylan.... as a piece of work, [the song] has all the pitfalls of a Hollywood remake."

Continued Jay-Z, 40, "I'm a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts: [Millions have been raised] through text [donations] to Haiti. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but 'We Are The World' is [musically] untouchable like 'Thriller' is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it's gonna be untouchable."

His suggestion?

"I think it's time for us to make a new [song]," Jay-Z said. "I tried to do that with 'Stranded,' [the tune Jay Z, Rihanna and U2's Bono and The Edge premiered at the 'Hope for Haiti Now' telethon]. I didn't try to make 'We Are the World,' but I tried to make our take on how we felt."

Now that the remake is done and the singers have walked away; anything said now may seem to be 'sour grapes'. it's too bad they redid the song; but they did and a big chunk of change was donated to help Haitians. i understand as a musician he would say that but i think lionel and quincy were looking at re-making a song and trying to capture the same feeling with the same song but with new singers. the message is the song not necessarily the singers. to me, it's like having DSB or popular journey songs being sung by all types of people on televison shows and baseball games; the message is what's important not who is singing the song necessarily.

I didn't listen to the remake... what I read about it screamed "TRAINWRECK!!!!" to me, so I didn't even bother. Seems I made the right decision.

"Stranded"

"Stranded" really grew on me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

It is amazing how Rhianna's and Bono's voices blend so well

And The Edge - simply haunting.

Jay-Z really keeps the entire thing flowing.

is ANYONE a fan of it????

It's terrible. Quincy Jones should be embarrassed.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

As the old saying goes......"If it aint broke, don't fix it!"

I'm not a fan of the remake either.
"as long as they have to carry DSB as their banner, it looks like Perry will be right there with them as an overseer, ready to wield his veto power on all things Classic Journey." As quoted by Don on 12/7/2010

I personally did not care for this version at all. I can never understand why people would want to mess with any original. I would be hard pressed to find a remake that was better than the original.

'We Are The World 25 for Haiti' Vs. The 1985 Original

Course, I expected the original to do better than the retread, but I'm surprised the new version did this well ...

Final Score:
We Are the World 1985: 13
We Are the World 2010: 10

Image
Steve Perry vs. Pink

Poor Pink. It's not an easy task to take over for the Journey front man who's been immortalized
in every karaoke bar in the world. Plus, Perry once sang a duet with Kenny Loggins called 'Don't Fight It'
... and Loggins sang the theme song to 'Caddyshack.'

Advantage: Perry/1985

Not surprised, but I thought Pink did a great job~she was one of my favorites!!!

THIS is friggin' nuts ... -
Bruce Springsteen vs. Wyclef Jean

The Boss, in all of his 'Born in the U.S.A.' glory, overdoes his part to the point where
he sounds like he's passing a kidney stone. (Full disclosure: We love Springsteen,
just not on this song.) Springsteen is from New Jersey; Jean is from Haiti and sings a lyric in Haitian Creole.

Advantage: Jean/2010

These aging stars should write checks or go there and roll up their sleeves ! Some were there for good intentions & others for facetime. The 1st WATW was real, this seems contrived.

This is so much better than the we are the world remake.

Jay-Z really is in touch with old and new. what a great mixture of bono and R. all three mix excellent and who would have thought ?

The song is really really good and this is how you do it, on your own talent!!!!

Thanks for posting.

It doesn't seem to be getting noticed, tho.

I am sure the industry pros appreciate it.

Could be that Jay-Z does not want to step on any of the toes in We Are The World camp.

and, Jay-Z has some of the biggest toes in the business.
