Me, too :) . This is the 1st complete song I ever heard SP singing -- before I dugged into the Journey catalog. If I were to critique the song, it's kind of plain, but just love how his voice sounds in it.

I like the song, but the music seems dated to me. The sax and keys reminds me of typical mid '80's music you would hear in a comedy/romance movie soundtrack. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Does anyone know if the song was recorded with his musicians/the Street Talk band, or were they WATW session musicians?

My understanding was they were looking for 9 more song contributors to go along with the signature song to fill out the LP. These are the tracks in order:

[1]. We Are the World - USA for Africa
[2]. If Only For The Moment, Girl - Steve Perry
[3]. Just a Little Closer - The Pointer Sisters
[4]. Trapped - Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
[5]. Tears Are Not Enough - Northern Lights
[6]. 4 The Tears in Your Eyes - Prince & the Revolution
[7]. Good for Nothing - Chicago
[8]. Total Control - Tina Turner
[9]. Little More Love - Kenny Rogers
[10]. Trouble In Paradise - Huey Lewis & The News

Steve had the 2nd spot. I think I read where he said he wrote the song specifically for the album. Of course, we could all speculate that he was at his creative peak during that period of time.

On the We Are The World 45 single I believe If Only For A Moment was the flip side. Great song.

So if Perry was sooooo 'waked' out on the ROR tour then he must have been soooo 'waked' out on the Frontiers tour too as the whole of that tour was at hyperspeed too, apart from the Japan shows. So he was 'waked' out for a full 3 years, right?

True, but on the Frontiers tour, I don't think Steve was acting all weird and at-times manic as on the RoR tour. Whether it be for drug reasons or for mental reasons, you can't really deny that his behavior was a tad off-kilter during that tour.

Agreed, he sure was well weird on the ROR tour, but i was giving reference to Froy stating that it was because Perry was wacked on the shit that its why the songs were at hyperspeed, when its blatantly obvious it wasn't the reason.
The ROR tour was not good and imo the Frontiers tour was not much better, as the songs were just waaay too fast. Suprising though that the Jap leg of the Frontiers tour was completely awesome when the songs were played right. Boggles the mind really.

I think the reason is actually pretty simple. It was extremely difficult for him to sing the older songs in the original key and, rather than downtuning and making the ROR songs sound really weird, they sped them up so he could get through them. It's a pretty common "trick" used by singers.
