Steve Perry's Voice Sounds Like Chocolate

Postby SP Fan in Oregon » Wed Apr 07, 2010 3:59 pm

There is a professional writer who is writing some pretty cool blogs under the Twitter Name CHOSEN MADNESS.
This is the latest in her long line of blogs about Steve Perry. You can find more on her website. http://wp.me/POKWb-v

I Love Steve Perry… and so do you.
I’ve been listening to Steve Perry a lot recently. Why? I’m not really sure. I’ve always loved his voice, but about two months ago I had the sudden desire to gather up every song the man has ever recorded and listen to them more or less constantly… partly to figure out why I had to listen to them more or less constantly…

And I have learned a few things from the experience:

1. I f***ing love Steve Perry.

2. No, seriously.

3. Shut up! You don’t even deserve Steve Perry!

4. There’s something about his voice… I am determined to track this down. There is a lot of research on music and endorphins, singing and oxytocin. But this voice in particular, man alive… it has a physical effect on me, very synaesthetic*. The only way I can describe it is to say that Steve Perry’s voice sounds like chocolate: it sounds the way chocolate tastes. And how can chocolate be bad? It can’t.

And because I am who I am, I’ve also been writing about Steve Perry a lot — I don’t think the stuff sounds too pathetically fangirly, especially in the context of the freaky little world of Steve Perry fan…atics… (You’re scared now, aren’t you? More about them later.) Anyway, never let it be said that I abandoned a chunk of text that might make someone laugh, so I’ll gather some of them up and post them here.

Now, here’s the thing to know about Steve Perry. He disappeared. You didn’t even realize it, but now that you think about it, you haven’t heard anything about him in years. He isn’t… I mean, he’s ok, right?

You are not alone. (And yes, he’s fine.) Steve Perry did indeed duck out of sight, on purpose, bye bye, later taters. Why? Oh… complicated. Almost not worth going into. If you’re really interested, go watch Journey: Behind the Music, and you will know everything that anyone is willing/legally able to say about it… which is not too bloody much.

Whatever — the really important thing to know about Steve Perry, aside from the fact that I love him and his voice sounds like chocolate and he disappeared, is that while you and I and almost everybody else in the world lost track of him, a faithful core of fans knows about it every time the man sneezes.

For all this time, like twelve years, these women have been talking and posting and listening and trading and dreaming about the day he comes back. I mean all day, every day, through twelve years of silence. That’s a lot of time to spend watching old videos and dreaming of those hazel eyes… (yes, they’re hazel. Shut up.)

Frankly, I find some of these fans a little scary; a few have lost touch with reality altogether. I saw a post somewhere that said “He is the perfect man!” That was such a patently ridiculous thing to say about anyone that I had to reply: “He IS! Did you know that he poops pixie dust?” My comment was removed. Some of these women have no sense of humor, apparently, but what they lack in perspective they make up for in sincerity: they truly, truly love Steve Perry and would do anything for him. (I don’t think he would use such power for evil but I cannot guarantee your safety.)

You can’t really make fun of these women, though, because here’s the thing. Even if you do not, like them, actually want to marry Steve Perry and bear his children… even if, like me, you would rather have lunch with the guy and talk about lyrical phrasing… you love Steve Perry too. You know you do.

He’s the best, what, are you kidding me? But there’s this leftover 80’s thing, like somehow one shouldn’t admit liking him. So the first step is to STOP listening to Don’t Stop Believin’. DO NOT listen to Faithfully or Open Arms — OUT. I know, this is a sacrifice. Our friend SVB, in particular, takes issue with the ban on Don’t Stop Believin’ . But the problem is that these songs have a kind of miasma about them, the residue of overplay and scorn, that reinforces the delusion that loving Steve Perry is lame.

And who decided that loving Steve Perry was lame? The same people who decided Journey was lame. And who decided that? Guys, that’s who. And why did guys decide Journey was lame? Because girls loved them. And why did girls love Journey? Because girls loved Steve Perry.

Now, how these guys were supposed to get laid off this jealous logic I do not know — but then I don’t understand why you guys haven’t taken better advantage of the Chick-Flick Effect (more on that in another essay). My husband loves Steve Perry — more precisely, he loves it when I listen to Steve Perry, because of the whole sounding-like-chocolate thing. Did you know that chocolate triggers the same hormones that are triggered by orgasm? And who reaps the benefit of that mood? Just sayin’.

And he’s so freaking lovable! Listen to any love song (DO NOT listen to Oh Sherry. Ever again.) and guess who it’s probably about? Sherrie Swafford. Yes she’s real, and yes he was head over heels in love with her. They broke up in, like, 1985 and he’s been writing about her ever since — how sweet is that? I mean… ok, it’s mostly tragic, especially for Steve Perry, but does it not make you go all melty? Yes it does, because men who believe in love are meltifying. (I should know, I have one of my own, right over there… on the couch… snoring. OK, usually he’s cuter than that.)

Steve Perry’s songs generally fall into three categories:

1. I love you and I can’t have you and it’s killing me.
(In my completely uninformed opinion these are all about Sherrie… because I want them to be. Because of the melting.)

2. I love you and I can’t have you but I’ll be waiting just in case you decide to come back. (This is the “If you Need Me, Booty-Call Me” group.)

2. I want you and I can’t have you but ooh, baby, I want you so bad!

Now what the hell could be better than that? When Freud asked ”what do women want?”, women the world over rolled their eyes because it isn’t so very mysterious. Women want to be wanted, with a white hot desire so all-encompassing that a man would lose himself and write something like this:

Believe me, I want you, I’d like to…
More than I show
But I belong to somebody else; baby, please
Walk out that door…
Before it’s too late

In the middle of your touch
In the middle where your heat starts rising
Ooh, girl, I want you so much…

Holy God! Now, come on, how do you not love that man? The man who wants you so bad he has to beg you to leave?! And he’s begging you to leave because he wants to be faithful?! To someone else, sure, but we’re talking character here.

And then you discover that the man who wrote it is actually a big sweet goofball who loves pizza and baseball and hiking and Joseph Campbell (follow your bliss, people!) He’s pretty damn easy on the eyes at 60 — did you know that 60 is the new 40? And he still has a voice that sounds like chocolate… maybe more like dark chocolate with crushed almonds, but that’s an improvement in my book. Plus the whole pixie dust thing? Well. You go ahead and deny it if you want, but I can see it in your eyes. Say it loud and say it proud: you love Steve Perry.

Psst… so do I!

Here's another essay: 8)

Once upon a time, there was an aspiring Delta Blues musician named Robert Johnson. He wasn’t very good, by all accounts. Then he disappeared, somewhat mysteriously, and when he came back he was unbelievably good, so good that people said he’d gone down to the crossroad. Fell down on his knees. Made a deal with the devil and traded his soul for some mad guitar skillz.

Because, hey, what could go wrong?

Robert Johnson recorded only a handful of tracks in 1936-1937, and died of strychnine poisoning (true fact!) at the heartbreaking age of 27.

Apparently, The Devil at the Crossroad isn’t much for an honest hand.

Which is why I am pleased to say that I have no evidence, nor do I believe for one single second, that Steve Perry has made any sort of deal with anyone at any crossroad at all.

However.

Take a look at this:
Image

That’s Steve with Nashville musician D. Mark Willis. Steve is 61 years old.

(By the way, notice the angle? This was clearly taken by a person of normal height like myself. Shut up, five foot two is normal! Plus we make Steve look really tall. He should surround himself with tiny little women 24/7.)

OK, so now look at this:
Image

That’s Steve, of course, back in the early 80s, and Steve in 2010.

That’s thirty years between the two.

Thirty.

Thir-TEE.

That ain’t even right.

We are supposed to AGE, Stephen, as we go along — this may have slipped your mind.

There are a few changes, sure; let’s take a look (because that’s why Steve Perry became a singer, so that thirty years later people could scrutinize his face for signs of age. Lucky thing he doesn’t have any, huh?)

So — first of all, his cheeks are fuller. That’s because Steve Perry was thinner in the 80s. So were you. Moving on.

The 2010 picture was taken with a cell phone, maybe? and has kind of a soft-focus fuzz. But even so, if Steve had big ol’ hangy jowls, for example, or that kind of map-of-Arizona leathery skin, they’d show up. And they do not.

Look at the lines around his nose and mouth — they are essentially the same as in the 80s. His chin is the same shape. His nose has lost some altitude, but then the force of gravity upon an object of such mass… ok, cheap shot.

His hair (you were waiting for the hair, I know) is not quite the glossy mane of thirty years ago (and I have my doubts as to the authenticity of color) but the man is 61! Look around you at the average 60-ish male and you gotta give Steve his props, the hair looks pretty damn great.

The real tragedy is that the soft focus blurs the laugh lines around his eyes (speaking of eyes… bags? None. Jerk.) Some people get crow’s feet… turkey feet… even ostrich feet. Steve has honest-to-God crinkles, the crinkles of a man who knows how to laugh.

They say that by 40 you have the face you deserve. It is a bit irksome that at 61, Steve has the face he deserved… at 40.

Baby, you’d better show some solid disintegration pretty soon or people will start to talk.

You know.

‘Bout the Crossroad.

Trag. Yep. I really liked that essay too but I couldn't easily copy and paste it with the pictures so I left that to someone with advanced techno skills.

Someone else wrote this Deano, not an MR member. The woman that wrote this
is an accomplished professional writer with a husband, kids and a job! Us, appreciating her writing style does not constitute a need for a mental institution.
Frankly, I think her writing is a refreshing change and healthy observations about Perry fandom. So, be nice. Otherwise the bunny's not visiting.

I found this from another blog. I can't believe I was actually looking for this kind of crap. Who spends time writing this crap? What the Hell is wrong with some people?

This bozo calls herself Rebecca. I think she needs to get a fucking life.

Will Never Stop Believin'!

Tears filled my tender eyes, as I had just been dumped by my boyfriend of two years, and the last notes to Journey's Faithfully were fading away that I soon found myself incredulously wondering about the velvet voice I had just heard on my car radio. I was no longer thinking about "Ben" who had kicked me to the curb, but rather Steve Perry, the "Voice" as he is called in the many circles of music. I was mesmerized, lost in a blur of delight, finding myself wanting to re-enter the battlefield of love, encouraged by the song I heard just moments earlier.

Faithfully was a top ten hit song for Journey back in the early 80's, and I now had to go out and get it, for my teen cd collection was spread out over two cars and three moves. I figured I would go down and pick up one of the many greatest hit packages that bands offer up as all star packages. I was soon in the aisle of a bustling Best Buy in West LA, searching for Journey. To their credit, the store stocked seemingly every Journey release to date, although I stopped following them in the mid 90's; apparently, that's when Steve Perry left the band. I was shocked to hear this. Upon glancing at the post 1996 years, I soon found out that Journey had gone through a lead singer change not once, but twice! I inquired with a Best Buy representative and casually asked her if she knew anything about Journey. "Sarah" was in her mid twenties, and to my surprise, claimed herself a huge Journey fan, or should I say, a huge Journey with Steve Perry fan. She did know about the two follow up lead singers in the band's history, but quickly pointed out that, "there's only one Steve Perry, only one who is called The Voice," and that the two follow up singers were nothing more than mere sound-a-likes.

So after the quick history lesson of Journey's latter years, I found my arms loaded up with every CD Journey released, with Steve Perry. The fire and earnest that was inside me when I heard that beautiful song just hours ago, was Steve Perry driven. It was that voice, that emotional delivery, that captured my attention. Sure, the band was great, but the main catalyst was the "Voice."

Soon, I was sitting outdoors along the sidewalk of my favorite cafe, pouring over my newly purchased gems. Glancing over the rear cover photo's brought back so many memories, and when I looked at Steve Perry's picture, I couldn't look away, unless it was to another backside photo of the band, and in particular, Steve Perry. I vividly remember back in 1981, seeing him with that long beautiful mane of his, and that very contagious smile, that only he seemingly possessed. Oh my, what was happening to me? I was feeling every bit my teenage years, falling in love with a rock star, and this just from his picture on the back of a CD, as well as that unmistakeably voice that I heard on the radio. I was feeling red in the face, although I really wasn't. I was feeling a tad foolish, for I had a new crush, a feeling that was pulling me into somewhere. I just had to know more about this guy, this Steve Perry.

Fast forward two months, and I can say I have religiously listened to all those Steve Perry, I mean Journey CD's at least a dozen times. Whenever I hear that voice, that ever identifiable voice, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and I once again melt. I now knew one thing for certain; I just had to find out even more about Steve Perry.

Some online researching revealed that since Perry was kicked out of the band, he has released two CD's, and has toured only a short time in support of one of those releases. I was saddened to learn of this. I had questions that needed answering. Firstly, why would Journey kick Perry out of the band? Would he ever release another CD, and would he ever tour again? The very "Voice" that rocked my world was now casting a long, dark shadow. To love something so much, and then come to find out it was no longer available was a hard truth to get my head around.

So today I listen to my music, and dream that someday, somewhere, I can once again, see and hear the "Voice."

EDIT- Internet rumors are circulating that Steve Perry has some new solo material recorded and is hoping for a 2010 release date. Be still my beating heart.

Oh man, I now know exactly why this guy stays retired, and it's not because he can't sing either. He is scared to death of you freaks!

Scary as Hell this Forum.

Sometimes those writings are done in jest. Not always are the authors serious when they write this stuff. They are just poking fun of themselves and fellow fans.

Steve Perry is a talented man, he is nice looking even today, and he will always be remembered by his fans. Having that said...............I hope Steve has experianced a full life. A life full of love, children and happiness. I hope he found true love that will last him his whole life. No this does not include myself ever.

I have my true love now, my first and last love.
Steve's music is inspiring and beautiful. I sing in my car every day to work and back...........an hour and fifteen minutes going one way. Total of 3 hours a day. I torture no one but myself.   I sing songs I can sing, not Journey or Perry tunes. Usually Olivia Newton John, or female artists of the eighties. I wish I could sing as well as he does, but I am content to sing because music is an intricate part of me.

No other singer has had such an impact on me as far as to make me collect memorabillia, join their fan club, or to write on a blog with other fans on a regular basis. I personally would not take the time for any other singer.

I painted a portrait of him, because I wanted to, and I felt it would be funny to surround him in a choir of frogs. Surrealism.......you don't have to get why.............that is why it is Surreal......dreamlike and nonsensical. Move along!

I quilted a quilt for him someday to give to him. I quilted a quilt for the band, collected fabric from all over the world, and from the band thanks to Lori and Cyndy. Why? I was that moved by this band's music. It was a comfort to me during a horrible time during my life, and a comfort in a one sided loveless marriage to my ex. :x It was the music that I think of my husband now, and helps me express my deep devotion and love for him. ( Yes this is yaggy...........but true)

He just had a way about him, a presence in voice that is strong, as much as I can say I like Arnel, he does not carry that strength in his voice. When he is acting silly, he made me laugh, his laugh is contageous.

It was a feeling I have never felt at any other concert.......not even now. The feeling of being so uplifted by the music and the words. I felt as if my heart had taken wings. A Journey concert with Steve at the front was a unique experiance, I cannot ever describe except to tell you it was one of the most memorable expeirances of my life.

My students were singing DSB to me on the trip...........I did not teach them the words.........they knew them themselves.......the song is timeless. I had to laugh when they started singing.

I wish him the best life has to offer. I hope he will remain always happy and that good health and fortune smiles his way. The music inspires me to draw and paint, and is a muse to this artists hands.

No restraining order needed in my case...........I have never tried to grab him, follow him, persue him ever. I don't want to find where he lives or who he hangs with. I respect his privacy.

I see him as human, flawed.........and if he poops Pixie dust............I don't want to know.
Besides it gets everywhere. :x :P
