Wow. Where to begin...boy, oh, boy. Well, I have no problem with sampling. Sampling a Journey song is even better (it's about time)...but this...I have a hard time imagining Perry (or any other member of Journey) would be very pleased with this use of their material.

I am not a big fan of cursing and especially aggressive gansta rap "smack my bitch" type stuff. Hmmm.... I wouldn't have minded it if the artist sampling the song was one who rapped about more intelligent things (Like Aesop Rock and Jurassic 5 for instance), but as it isn't the case... eh. Nah. An interesting concept, though. Just not the right place to put it. (And hey, it could've been worse... it could've been Lil' Wayne doing it. ) (That reminds me of one of my personal rules for finding music.... if a rap 'artist' has "Lil' in front of their name, they're bound to suck!)

As far as "intelligent lyrics" whomever the artist was he did his thing sampling a Journey song, whatever. It could have been Leyontyne Price (black Opera singer) or Dolly Parton, would not have mattered to me.

Okay....about rap. Not my favorite form of artististic expression, but...

To some people, mainly non-blacks, rappers are offensive because they rap or "spit rhythms" about their lives of hard living, slinging dope and bitches who hit then up for money, etc. They are just as offensive to me, however, as some Catholic artists like Marilyn Manson and Madonna who push envelopes by picking on religious order they later learned to loathe. Or Death Metal artists who speak of killings and murderous people, drinking blood, etc. All the artists are making a living by parodying or speaking of what irks them or what their lives are about. They rap, I listen, maybe I learn, I move on.

Rap is basically musical oratory based on versions of "scatting" and jazz. But, black people are known for bringing it to light and using it for artist expression and story telling. But, then you have great artists like Eminem who rapped a song called "Stan" about an obsessed fan who killed his girlfriend and himself because Eminem did not answer his letters. It was a most disturbing song that to this day sends chills down my spine. This song to me was just as controversial talking about suicide as Ice Tea's song called Cop Killer. Both songs were for entertainment, but they parodied reality, suicide and a black guy tired of being harassed by cops.

Words are powerful, but rap is also a form of entertainment. That's it, that's all. Now, however Eminem classifies himself as, "white trash" "white rapper" or "artistic genius" he raps about the same things black rappers, or "niggas" or "hood rats" rap about, life, or they parody life. They rap to entertain and make money.

I think Eminem is a brilliant artist and very brave. I would never say I HATE his category or style of artistic expression anymore than I would say I hate M. Manson or Iron Maiden or whomever else out there "spits" aggressive lyrics about controversial topics. And I may not LOVE Lil Wayne or Lil Mama or Lil Kim Lil John or Pit Bull, or Paul Wall, but I don't hate them, hate is a strong word. Matter of fact I never really liked country music, I saw country music as being white people's blues, just like some non-blacks see rap as only being black people's music. Yet I adored country artists like Kenny Rodgers, Glen Campbell, Tanya Tucker and Dolly Parton.

So, to each his own, I guess. Hey, I'd prefer some artists not to be in the streets selling dope, prostituting or whatever their lives are about. If they won't get educations and work a 9 to 5 like the rest of us why not make money off their rap talents? Lord knows I sure can't make their kind of money being a city employee.

I didn't have a problem with them sampling the music, it was the way they did it that I had a problem with. It almost seemed disrespectful to my ears. Having four kids, I hear ALL kinds of music, and I like some rap. I'm a huge fan of eminem, but more of the 'pop' versions than the "I'm gonna cut you up and throw you out the window" crap with expletives every other word.

Rap and country are the opposite ends of a spectrum of music that I enjoy - talking about real life issues. It's one of the reasons I like Journey music so much too, I think. Just a small town girl...

I don't have a problem with rap...just that version. And (like DP) I'm a mother of teenaged boys, too, and used to hearing all kinds of music. There are rap songs that are good to listen to, and then there are rap songs that are plain crude (trash).
