If anyone could stack a Chorus or general Vocals....

It's Steve.

Hey, all....

Drove around today listening to my "Rare Steve" CD....you know what?

The guy's a freakin' genius.

Not only Musically, but he's also savvy, financially....it'd cost major TIME AND MONEY to bring in and train Backup Singers.

Just listen to the a-capella part of "Ask The Lonely" at 2:40:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeneHH3-L2I
2 vocal tracks - melody line
2 tracks - lower harmony
2 tracks - higher harmony

or the Bridge "whoa oh" of "Somebody, Somewhere" - at 2:02: not to mention the fading high note at 2:11 8)

By my guesstimation, there's approx. 8 vocal tracks going on:

I think he sounds average on this song, Somebody Somewhere. I've never owned so many CDs that the singer sounds so consistently stellar on like Steve Perry, but this isn't one of them even with all the vocal tracks.

With his range... it was prolly just was easier to do it himself...

Missing You is a good track showing vocal harmonies too...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5CaLMNnwhg

as is Go Away... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQzF8MH21fw

This is still my favorite... cause the blend of voices was just perfect.. still the best blend IMHO of all their lineups...

I love that lineup too, and this song has no real backing vocals to speak of, Full Straight On Perry, and, wow, on fire. Perry's vocals, Rolie's harmonica, love Schon's guitar, Smitty's drumming.

Precious Time - http://www.youtube.com/v/KZ_mKTV3MoU&hl=en

Oh, well, back to choruses. You made me think of that song when you mentioned that lineup.

Good topic. Although I would have to say that, hands-down, the best example of Steve's harmonizing is Destiny. I'm pretty sure he's doing a 5 part harmony on this one. It's haunting.

The intro is pretty long, his vocals start at 1:49.

Great analysis, you guys. Can't pick out a melody from harmony if my life depended on it, but love Steve and these songs.
Gregg Rolie has a great singing voice, in his own right (imo).

I would rank Brad Delp right up there with S.P. for stacking harmonies,
both are fantastic!

I remember in choir how our teacher always told us that the best matched voices for harmony was your own voice.

There's 8 tracks going on when he sings, "Fly away..."

 Mind you, he has to HOLD ALL THE SUSTAINED NOTES in the earlier tracks.

So, in general, for Journey's stacking Choruses, did Rollie and Neal sing on them? What about Cain and Neil? Sometimes it sounds just like Steve and other times I know I hear different tonal voices in the harmonies.

SO do Cain, Neil and Rollie sing backup in the studio on most of these tracks? Or is it all Steve?

I can't speak for all tracks, but I know that quite a few of them are all Perry. Neal even mentioned that in an interview, that when they did Infinity, it was like a million Steve Perry's singing on it.
