Just my opinion...
I just can not ever see this song sung any better, by anyone, anytime, ever.

I just don't think its possible.

Yup, 'Stunning' is the word.
The folks at Budokan, Japan got their money's worth that evening.
I never saw Journey in concert, but I just can not imagine them playing better.
Steve and Neal both look to be at the very top of their game.

Yes, Stunning.

I've listened to a lot of Perry boots over the years and I maintain that I haven't heard a single knockout live performance of Open Arms from him, this one included. He just sounds way too hammy {Deb, gotta love her, would call it emoting. }.

Live!Perry was at his best during the pre-Cain years, like Captured.

 Open Arms isn't usually one that knocks me out either. Still They Ride, on the other hand.....there is very few live performances of that one that don't knock me out. That STR I posted above isn't even a performance clip, it's just a LIVE audio from '83........stunning! If a vocal performance (especially live, anybody can do studio) can damn near make my toes curl, then yeah, that is called great emoting, my friend! :D There is a fine line between great emoting and over-singing/too-hammy.

Some more great emoting in my sig. :)

I haven't heard as many live performances of 'Open Arms' as you, I'm sure, and truth be told it isn't my favorite Journey Song.
But of the performances I have heard, I think this one is vocally the best...and of the ones I have heard, Perry sounds the 'least hammiest' on this one, at least to me.

It definitely comes down to perception. Some, like Deb, see SP's mannerisms as heart-warming or -wrenching emoting for the audience's benefit; others, like me, see it as unnecessary theatrics that distract the audience. One isn't more valid than the other and I respect your opinion.

I have to be honest. I think for that particular show which I've watched quite a few times, Open Arms was Perry's worse performance. It sounded like he was totally winded and cheating on the notes a bit.

I believe he got it back together at the end of the show for AWYWI and Separate Ways but that part int he middle with WCN and OA wasn't his best work.

^ Now that is Escape-era Perry at his best. Pay special attention to the 1:19 mark, when he begins the lyric "feeling that it's gone." Absolutely searing, perfect pitch and tone. No theatrics, just him using his God-given gift to its maximum potency.

Wow thats just amazing, isn't it?
I think it could be argued all day HOW Steve Perry utilized his vocal talent, but I think of all the 70s-80s Rock era vocalists, no one is even close to Steve Perry.

Well I wouldn't go that far, but I'd argue he's the most technically gifted in rock history.

Love that era too. Damn, there is some fine vocal performances from Departure era.............love this one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GnK_f3-DI0

Have this one on a rarities dvd somewhere, that one is a little fuzzier than my copy and I can't even remember what show it's from, but it's one of my faves cuz ya knows how I love my bluesy rock. I recall somebody mentioning that Neal's and Steve's girlfriends are sitting in the front row. Kinda cute how around the 3:30 mark there, during his solo, Neal walks over and blows his gf a kiss.
