Universal Publishing signs Steve Perry deal

by Tim Ingham

Don’t Stop Believin’ hitmaker Steve Perry has signed an exclusive publishing administration agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group for the world outside of the US and Canada,

The deal includes all songs written or co-written by Perry throughout his career, including as lead singer of Journey and his solo work.

“One of the greatest voices in the history of rock also wrote or co-wrote some of rocks greatest songs. We couldn’t be prouder that he has chosen to bring those songs to UMPG. We look forward to working with him on both his iconic catalog and his new songs,” said Zach Horowitz, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group.

Steve Perry said, “I so look forward to being a part of the Universal Music Publishing Group. I know they really get what songs are about and they still believe in the magic of music."

As the lead singer of Journey and in his solo career, Perry is responsible for writing or co-writing tracks such as Oh Sherrie, Any Way You Want It, Foolish Heart, Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), Open Arms, Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin,’ and Who's Crying Now.

His songs have been featured on television shows such as Glee and American Idol, and in Broadway plays like Rock of Ages and films like Monster, Money Ball. Artists who have recorded cover versions of his songs include Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Barry Manilow, Martina McBride, and Rise Against.

In the UK, the Glee cast version of Don’t Stop Believin’ went to No.2 on the Official Singles chart.

Infinity, Perry’s first album with Journey, has sold more than 3 million copies while 1981’s Escape has sold more than 12.4 million worldwide.

The band’s Greatest Hits album, with most songs written or co-written by Steve Perry, has sold over 25 million albums worldwide. Journey’s catalog has now sold over 60 million albums.

Well that's certainly promising. Fingers crossed Perry is happy with what he lays down and opts to put it out there.

I'm at a loss for words. All I can say is "WOW". He has finally made a step forward.

It's a publishing deal... they'll manage collecting royalties for him.. that's all... he probably used the current popularity to get a better rate....

UNIVERSAL PUBLISHING SIGNS STEVE PERRY DEAL:

(On Andrew's front page)...

....So what does this mean folks? Well, basically Steve Perry's publishing contract was up for renewal and this is his new deal. It is a promising step towards new music, especially given that UMPG CEO Zack Horowitz used the term "his new songs" in his statement. But even unreleased songs need copyright/publishing protection, so this is no immediate indication of new material imminent. Van Halen did the same thing a little while back, renewing with Warner Music and it was still 18 months until a new album surfaced. So good news, but a new Steve Perry album is still some time off I think.

Yeah, it's just an overall deal, but as with all deals they cover their bases. So while most of the work is about the old catalog, IF new music should happen to be created and Perry agrees to release to the public, Universal would be the ones to put it out.

You must not have read the article or the thread... Here's the actual UMPG press release:

Universal Music Publishing Group Signs Legendary Artist/Singer/Songwriter, Steve Perry

Santa Monica, CA (September 6, 2012) – Steve Perry, the legendary singer/songwriter, has signed an exclusive publishing administration agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), for the world outside of the US and Canada, it was announced today by Zach Horowitz, Chairman & CEO of UMPG. The deal includes all songs written or co-written by Steve Perry throughout his career, including as lead singer of Journey and his solo work.

Had Perry had any NEW music forthcoming:

  • there would already be a buzz about it in the music industry
  • Perry would have a website that said so....

This is just Perry getting a new admin deal for his catalog.. because his Journey music is still making the bacon...

I think this is to make sure he collects his proper royalty income along with licensing requests and fees outside of North America, where different rules and regulations apply concerning copyright and what not.
It makes me think that Jon and Neal might do the same thing too if they realize that there is a lot of income outside the U.S. they have been missing out on the last few years due to their publishers maybe not being quite as diligent in checking out whether all of the international uses of the Journey catalog have been in compliance with various copyright procedures worldwide.

From Universal's press release

http://www.universalmusic.com/corporate/detail/2181

"..Steve Perry has also enjoyed huge success as a solo artist. His album, Street Talk, also featuring songs he wrote or co-wrote, has sold over 4 million albums and spawned the chart topping hits “Oh Sherrie,” “Foolish Heart,” “She’s Mine” and “Strung Out.”

I had no idea. I wonder if that is worldwide numbers.

It's missing the worldwide qualifier, but everything else refers to worldwide numbers.

Take all that with a grain of salt. None of those songs "Topped" the charts. That implies being number one. Sherrie was the only one that even cracked the top 10.

Well, I don't know what it means but sounds like a good deal.
I'm reminded daily by my primarily non-verbal autistic girl when she says over & over to me, "dun sop be-even"...so, okay, whatever I shouldn't stop believin' in. :) BTW, that rascal somehow took my ROR CD (up very high) and was singing to "I'll be alright without" when I walked into her room the other day! And, she really wants my Soundstage copy...like cries for it but it's one of my very favorites & there's only one.

"chart-topping" is commonly used term when referring to big hits. I don't think it's meant literally as something having reached #1. That said... 4M sold for ST doesn't seem so outlandish...for worldwide sales....considering the album's been available (in many variations) since 1984, while SP continuously has kept himself in the music world conscienceness.

Heck, album had a good headstart, having reached double platinum (halfway there) when it first came out, right?
