Does Steve Perry Suck?

Postby MotherCitay » Fri Dec 28, 2012 11:15 pm

I have to wonder whether Billy Joel's comments between 0:40 and 1:10 is what Steve Perry fears hearing about his 50 songs?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 3Q9Yeh_iW4

Thing is, he's been talking about those 50 songs for years now.
Has he run out of polish to finish them off?
Was he hoping to hop onto a Mayan spaceship and escape releasing them?
What DOES he say in the next interview about those 50 songs?

For some people rejection can be a serious blow to the ego, it's a possibility, he has hinted at something like that in recent interviews. Not being able to get out of his own way is most likely why he hasn't finished his fifty songs, and maybe he never will, but what he has given his fans is more than enough to be worthy of praise. jmho.

It's just natural human instinct, to want folks to like what you do...
Some can handle it, some can't ...
If you love your craft, but you stand in the way of it...
Who knows...
If your one of the lucky ones..who don't give a chit..
Well then your craft may be chit...
So love & embrace your craft & do it well...
That's all anyone can ask for...
Perry's good natured bonhomie & the world’s most charmin smile, knocked fans off their feet. Sportin a black tux, gigs came alive as he swished around the stage thrillin audiences w/ charisma that instantly burnt the oxygen right out of the venue.TR.com

Oh boy I don't like what Billy Joel says. My belief is that you don't go around asking others for their opinion unless you are already insecure with your talent.
When you start out in the business as an artist of your craft; you go in with your guns blazing, you are so absolutefreakinlutely sure you have best talent in the entire world and you don't waste your time for the opinion of others because nobody is better than you. There are so many singers and other artist who have no talent at all and are HUGE. It's all a self confidence thing; if you are not confident than you have no business being in the business in the first place.

I don't think its "confidence" at all... it's more a compulsion to create to please oneself first, and the acceptance that "some will like it some won't". Those that are in it for external accolades are more fame whores than anything else, and usually anything "creative" that comes from them is recognizably formulaic, and only serves their quest for fame.

Most of the successful songwriter/musicians I admire... Don Henley, Matthew Sweet, John Mayer, Steve Perry, Schon.. really don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks... they may say so.. but that's largely lip service..

Compulsion? I think for some the compulsion didn't happen right away. You get disappointed and you give up on your talent. Some time you give up and go on living your life until someone convinces you to try it again. They believe in you more than you believe in yourself. Compulsion happens for some after you start believing in yourself (confidence) that you can please yourself with your talent.

Think about it.. you are disagreeing with Billy Joel.. he's an artist.. and a successful one.. so his opinion on the topic is gonna have a a bit more weight than yours.. he's lived it.

Any true artist creates because they have to... first and foremost.

Kurt Cobain was highly creative, and hated success so much he offed himself.

The act and need to create and a persons temperament are not mutually exclusive.

We're just gonna have to disagree on this.

My answer to that question is yes. How else would he consume a sucker or cough drop or mint?

I don't think there's a right or wrong here. Everyone has his/her own opinion/belief/interpretation and is just expressing it. Obviously, BJ knows his own self and was sharing with the public. And, Marabelle is free to disagree with him ....
