Shane Ryan and Josh Jackson review Breaking Bad each week in a series of letters.

Josh,

8. The song playing in the background for the cold open was “Oh, Sherrie” by Steve Perry (of Journey fame) and I had a strangely enjoyable time watching the long version of the music video. However, Josh, I don’t know the significance, and would love to hear your thoughts. I also don’t know the second song, “”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEKZJp-x-Dc">Thunder Island" by Jay Ferguson, playing just before Todd’s phone rings while he’s looking at Lydia’s lipstick. But seriously, dig that album cover.

Shane,

8. “Oh Sherrie” was great. If you want to find meaning look no further than the final verse: “But I should’ve been gone / Long ago and far away / And you should’ve been gone / Now I know just why you stay.” Or you could just enjoy that sweet, sweet alto tenor voice of his. But even better was Todd’s ringtone: “She Blinded Me With Science.” He’s putting a real effort into this new career path. Tami Taylor would be so proud.

Yeah, I caught this too. And outside of the lyrics that those two reviewers were talking about, I'm a little puzzled by Perry's choice to let them use this song. I mean, he was so set that the Soprano's couldn't use DSB if someone was gonna get whacked, but he'll put himself (& Sherrie), in the middle of a crystal meth lab. In other words, killing a gangster isn't acceptable, but being hooked on an extremely dangerous drug is. Okay. :?:

Anyha, just thought I'd toss it out there for debate.

But wait, I think Perry has said that he gave that song to 'Sherrie'. If that includes all the legal schtuff, then using this song in Breaking Bad may not have been his choice. Hhhmmm...?

EW recently gave the show the full feature article treatment ... read the full synopsis of it's 5 seasons (their farewell). I had been aware of BB's increased popularity and critical acclaim. But, like the Soprano's and Dexter, I can't bring myself to watch any of their shows. I like a good drama and suspense, but overt violence and gore repulse me.

The scene involved a young man taking a phone call from Walter White. 'Oh Sherrie' was played in the background of a warehouse, where the younger man was at the time. The contents of the phonecall were of a potential violent nature, but no actual violence or bloodshed was on screen whilst the music was played. It was likely licensed due to the fact there were no drugs or blood involved, thus not distorting people's perception of the song.

Can't figure the 'legal rights to use' the song, but it IS a pre-breakup tale, in fact - the song is about a bad-break in the making (sry, love isn't enough)... so, Breaking Bad/bad break? All in all, the song is so melodic (pun!) That I'm happy to hear it and might question why, but afterwards. I just might watch that episode of BB and see if I can come up with a little more insight.
