Aww man, I've thought about that a lot. I think most figure out that there is a pinacle and then we all regress some. I think with some hard work Steve could perform at a level that is reasonable. Likely not at an Escape level but 80% or so is reasonable. I think his fans would support that.
I seen Brad Delp with Boston several years ago. He had Fran Cosmo helping on vocals and he called it out on stage. Said he didn't have quite the range he used to and called in Fran for back up. They sound great and the crowd responded well to this approach. I personally liked this approach. It's an option for Steve.
His vocals are the best of any rock singer on the planet. I hope for his fans, and himself, he doesn't miss the opportunity to create some great music again. We're all getting older and if he doesn't give it a whirl, he'll be dead. He, Gregg and Schon need to bury the hatch and get rockin. 80% capability is ok by me.

Please put aside your lack of self confidence and give your fans some new music sir. We realize you've aged a bit since 1987, we realize you likely can't carry the same range you once did when you were in your 30's. We, as your fans, don't give shit about that. We really want to hear your voice again before you pass on. Please get past your lack of self confidence. Please get over Schon getting a new guy. Weeping Jesus on a fucking stick, you are the BEST VOCALIST TO EVER WALK THE PLANT. Get over it, go get Brett Manning as a coach, get Neal and rock some. We've all been through shite and respect the shite you've been through. Now power through and give us some love. Do it for your fans sir, we would love you for it.
Your Fans!
Not sure what you do for a living Aaron, but consider your worst day at the office where you perform to the absolute worst of your ability and embarrass yourself. Imagine that on a scale x 10,000 and millions of people worldwide see and hear just how up to the task you are NOT. Steve Perry owes his fans nothing and probably prefers to let the music of his prime speak for itself. I want new music from this man as much as the next guy, but I respect his decision to stay private if he doesn't feel he can meet the gold standard he set so long ago.
