During the encore of the Eels performance at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, a surprise guest for the ages came along. Journey founding vocalist Steve Perry, who has kept a low profile since he left the band in 1998, took Sunday's show in an unexpected direction.
After performing "It's a Motherfucker" from 2000's Daisies of the Galaxy, Perry remarked, "I love that song. I've told you over and over again I love that song... Someday I wanted to sing that song. Tonight was the first time I ever sang it. You know, I don't know why the Eels don't do my music." To that, E replied, "We were just waiting for you." Then, they launched into the Journey classics "Open Arms" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'." No joke.
Given the emotional weight of both parties involved, it was no stretch to get the audience on board for this collaboration. You can hear them singing heartily along for the latter song.
