In this day and age, it takes a lot to surprise and delight a concert audience. But Mark Oliver Everett, AKA the man behind the moody indie rock band Eels managed to charm the heck out of a whole lot of people at the Fitzgerald Theater Sunday night, when he brought former Journey frontman Steve Perry to the stage for the third encore to sing a few songs.

They started out with the Eels song “It’s a Motherf****r,” which Perry has previously posted on an iTunes celebrity playlist, then proceeded to play two Journey hits, “Open Arms” and “Lovin’ Touchin’, Squeezin’”.

Cake in 15 has a great rundown of the collective excitement that ensued when Everett brought out Perry, including video of the first song in the encore:

“But it wasn’t until Steve Perry – Steve “The Voice” Perry from Journey, who hasn’t really sung in 20 some years — was midway through putting his silky spin on “It’s a Motherf****r” as our brains collectively short-circuited that we could even start to realize what was happening, what had happened.”

The Eels-Journey pairing notwithstanding, Perry’s appearance on stage was so mind-boggling because he has been notably absent from public performances, save for a few impromptu singalongs at San Francisco Giants baseball games for more than 20 years.

By most accounts, it was an excellent Eels show, but when you bring out one of the most iconic voices of 1980s arena rock, that’s what people are going to talk about.

I know that is made even the Yahoo Music News today!

It was a dream come true to see him on stage singing in front of a live audience again.

I wish this could mean he will tour again but the "Faithful Ones" will just have to wait n see what happens.

Just when you think there is nothing more to come....another surprise
And this a big one, no simple posing with a fan or showing up at a premier
Singing.....and lots of it!

I enjoyed the Ells song and just that was more than enough for me
His tribute to them on a song of theirs he loves
And from a guy (icon) who does not do this every day, they should be honored
I wonder what the connection is, why he was in Minneapolis?

I could have done without the Journey, changing the songs up
I am still old school, insist on Steve Perry but want the rest of the band too

Good, bad, or ugly, one thing we can definitely say for sure. People still know who Steve Perry is. From the cheers of the audience and all the views on You Tube, as well as this story being one of the top trending stories on Facebook, I'd say people still consider Steve Perry a household name.

NBC's Today Show was gushing this morning. Teased it a few times, intro'd it, then played a snippet. Carson Daly did a little online trending. Btw, Arnel Pineda was mentioned as Journey's current singer. That was cool. So, I expect there'll be some followup now about why he hasn't been doing much in the past 20 yrs. There's probably more people out there that are curious other than just the hardcore here online.

Obviously, much to the surprise of many, he can still sing. Does a great job on 'It's a MFr', and although Journey is tuned down a bit, he hits a great note @ 9:50 on the full clip.

I just got home to view it GI They can post it till the cows come home. I was quite moved to hear him again. I don't know why he went out there, but I am glad he did. I actually cried. It was like hearing the voice of a long lost friend. Beautiful.

I'd think it would be great for journey more than just Steve perry. He did an eels song and 2 journey songs. People are going to go look up journey ey before street talk or strange medicine. But yeah, I bet Neal is like WTF? But hopefully he is really happy for him.

Over a million views of the video in 2 days. With the interest this has kicked up, I'm sure requests for an interview have been pounding in. Wonder if Perry will do any interviews and if he does, who will be the lucky person to get first crack.

Wow! Steve has to be so happy that his singing with the Eels made such an impact on the Music News.

He still has the Voice!

He still has his signature Moves!

And well, the audience and the rest of "The Faithful Ones" are all excited about him singing live again!

I hope we hear a lot more from Steve!

I got to be honest I can't stop watching the video over and over again it's like a dream come true, for us fans.

When I watch it, you can see by the middle of "Open Arms", that he is So Happy to be there!

When it's at the end of LTS, it looks like he feels at Home again on stage.

With that, all I have to say is I hope there will be more night like this!!!!

Cause at the end when he comes back and takes a bow, it looks like all his fears of being accepted back by an audience are gone.

He is at Home with the Ones who Love & Respect him and his Music.

Very few vocalists can affect me that much!

I hope he knows that this has really stirred up the fans,
the natives are restless....lol, and he has captivated
their hearts again..., he may have to hang low
