Could we be witnessing Steve Perry’s comeback to the stage right before our eyes? The former Journey frontman has been making special guest appearances with the indie rock band Eels in the past weeks to many fans’ delight, including one most recent stop at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre Wednesday night.

Perry surprised fans by performing a few songs with the band that included two Journey songs, “Open Arms” (which he’s performed before) and the addition of a new song “Lights” to his setlist, reports Ultimate Classic Rock.

Before launching into “Lights,” which the band notes he hasn’t sung in over 20 years, Perry explains to the crowd about the song’s origins.

“It actually started in Los Angeles…it started out here, sort of finished it, then I got this call to join this band in Northern California called Journey, and we finished it up there and changed L.A. to the Bay,” he explained to the cheering crowd.

After re-emerging on stage for the first time in nearly 20 years in early May, Perry has been popping up at various shows with the Eels including the first show in St. Paul then again in Washington, D.C. Thankfully, fans have been capturing these amazing performances on video and sharing them with the world.
Perry's good natured bonhomie & the world’s most charmin smile, knocked fans off their feet. Sportin a black tux, gigs came alive as he swished around the stage thrillin audiences w/ charisma that instantly burnt the oxygen right out of the venue.TR.com

Steve Perry Is Basically In Eels Now; Watch Them Do Journey’s “Lights” In L.A.

When we talked to E about Steve Perry’s surprise performance with Eels in St. Paul, he said he wasn’t sure if it would ever happen again: “That’s all up to him, you know? You can’t really tell Steve Perry what to do. You just go along for the ride, you know?” Sure enough, Perry did join Eels on stage a second time in D.C., running through the same three songs (Eels’ “It’s A Motherfucker” plus Journey’s “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’”) plus a cover of Sam Cooke’s “Only Sixteen.” Last night in L.A. at the Orpheum Theatre, Perry joined Eels once again, this time belting out Journey’s “Lights” in addition to “It’s A Motherfucker” and “Open Arms.”

Seems like the next step is just adding Perry as an official band member. They can bring him out at the end of every show; it could be their new thing. Anyhow, watch all three performances from the Orpheum below, and be sure to check out Perry’s emotional monologue before “It’s A Motherfucker.”
