A new book reveals Van Halen was originally named Genesis, David Lee Roth once out-partied Ozzy Osbourne, and other strange tales.

5. Journey singer Steve Perry once stopped them from destroying a Sheraton hotel
While opening for Journey in 1978, Van Halen decided to destroy the entire 7th floor of a Sheraton in Madison, Wisconsin. They smashed lamps and mirrors, ripped bathroom doors off the hinges, had fire extinguisher fights and threw TVs, furniture, toilet seats and rotary phones out the window. Alex Van Halen was the worst culprit, but settled down after Perry stopped him and warned, "You know you're going to have to pay for that stuff." Nerd alert! The band later blamed the damage on Journey and thanked "Sheraton Hotel (seventh floor) Madison, Wisconsin" in the liner notes for Van Halen II.
Perry's good natured bonhomie & the world’s most charmin smile, knocked fans off their feet. Sportin a black tux, gigs came alive as he swished around the stage thrillin audiences w/ charisma that instantly burnt the oxygen right out of the venue.TR.com

That SP.....what a guy!! Should make for an interesting read!! I'm reading John Fogerty's bio now, not nearly so much drama, although I'm only on chapter 8!!

Blow away? I don't know about that.

Van Halen is a guitar legend, but so is Neal.

Roth is a charistmatic front man, but about the worst live singer to get in front of a microphone. Against Perry live? And Alex against Smitty on drums? Come on ...

Eddie was opening the door to guitar shredding with their debut album....something that was new to a lot of audiences. "Eruption" was way heavier than anything on Infinity.

And Journey still had Aynsley Dunbar behind the kit at this time (who was no slouch at all....but a different kind of player than Alex).

With that said...I doubt that VH was blowing them away.
