Lol. You make "Happy to Give" sound like it's prog with weird time signatures. It's not "different" in any musically bold way. It's just boring and very dated. Monker once brilliantly said that ROR sounded like stuff they played at the mall. He's right.

It's definitely not a typical Journey song, and it is dated. I always liked it, though. It does showcase Perry's vocals well, in a story-telling kind of way. Actually, a good portion of the Strange Medicine album follows the same structure. Not a ballad, not a rocker, but a decent showcase for heartbreaking, passionate vocals. Not everyone's cup of tea if you're in to the hard rocking stuff. But that's the R&B/gospel influence coming out of him.

Well said...passionate vocals. If that's what you do best, and thats what comes out when you write, then that's what you should do. He was just staying true to himself, just as Neal is doing. Why is it some can applaud one, but mock the other?

I have long thought the same thing about Strange Medicine comparison . I don't see it as rb/gospel though. I need to go back and give it a listen. It's been awhile.

Sorry for the confusion...I didn't mean to actually refer to the album itself as gospel-like. We all know that his roots and vocal style were influenced by R&B and gospel...pure soul and passion. That influence is reflected on his performance on the Medicine album.

back in the day, i was glad for Happy to Give as I was a big fan of the Frontier sound. Always thought song could be on the B side. Now the synths sound dated and it needed more of Neals guitar. I love Perry vocals however (not the sappy words).

I thought it was dated when it came out 30 years ago. Yeah and the lyrics... A precursor to Strange Medicine, IMO

HTG – Journey’s most polarizing song among the hardcore fans. I’ve read both arguments in Journey threads over the years. Love or hate…no middle ground. I understand both sides. Not a rocker or ballad, it’s far removed from a typical Journey song. Yet, so many (hardly perryloons) feel the emotional core of this song. I remember one guy (fan from early years) called it Journey’s best ever. I find discussions like this fascinating.
