Well, have to write a comment on this...

Steve Perry did not write "Faithfully". Jonathan Cain did. He has sole writing credits on the song. When Perry heard the song, he wanted it for "Street Talk". Jonathan refused - he knew it should be a Journey song, and he was right.

When you compare the lyrics, and general songwriting, when Jonathan joined the band the songwriting moved up a step. It moved to a place where Steve Perry did not take them on his own. There are times where Perry does write great lyrics but not as consistently as the Journey songs with Jonathan. Steve Perry may be a writer on all the 'hits' but Jonathan was a writer on every Journey song from the time he joined the band with Escape up to Arrival, when I believe he had ONE song where he did not get a writing credit.

This is where I think people need to start looking at Journey as a team - when writing songs. Rarely did only one person write the songs. When they write together, it can turn into something special. Whether it is Perry/Cain, or Perry/Schon or Perry/Schon/Cain the songwriting is elevated. "Lights" would not be the same without Neal writing his guitar part, for example. The story of "Who's Cryin' Now" where Perry is with Jonathan at his piano and he's playing, and it is raining outside, and Perry just says "who's cryin now?" because of ambience of the moment...and a song is born from that one line and Jonathan's playing. To me, it seems like Perry writes with the melody in mind, or at least how the lyrics are going to be heard when he sings them. Jonathan writes lyrics with a story in mind that he wants to tell. Neal writes from the POV of the guitar being its own voice and complimenting Perry's voice and the mood of the song. All three know and understand musical melody and harmony, etc. Rarely can one person can do all of that by themselves. In fact, songs like "Separate Ways" even had Steve Smith and/or Ross contributing...sometimes in uncredited ways...I can't imagine how "Separate Ways" would sound if Steve Smith was not part of the band at the time.

So, IMO, it is too generic to simply say that Perry "writes great lyrics'. Yeah, he can, at times. But, I think the correct compliment is that he can take a lyric and add emotion and power to it and elevate it in a way that very few singers can. He can also recognize when a lyric could be changed so he can add more emotion and power to it. Those are, IMO, the real strengths of Steve Perry's songwriting.

You can especially hear this on his solo songs. From the power of the first words of "Oh Sherrie" to the emphasis of the chorus on "Captured By the Moment" to how he sings the melody on "Foolish Heart". That is also what he is doing on the song "Melody" on one of the CD5's from FTLOSM. Perry is at his best when his focus is on how the lyrics are heard when he sings them.

Thank you for the comment it was very interesting and informative! I enjoy reading other aspects and interpretations. You seem to be very passionate about Journey and their music. I respect your opinion and I appreciate your enthusiasm. However, I would like to offer a different perspective on the songwriting process and the roles of Jonathan Cain and Steve Perry.
While it is true that Jonathan Cain has sole writing credits for the song “Faithfully” and that he played a significant role in Journey’s songwriting after joining the band, it is not fair to diminish Steve Perry’s contributions. Perry was a prolific songwriter in his own right and was responsible for many of Journey’s hits. His unique vocal style and ability to craft memorable melodies were integral to the band’s success.
Furthermore, it is important to recognize that songwriting is often a collaborative process. As your comment itself points out, Journey’s best work often came from collaboration between multiple members of the band. Perry, Cain, and Schon all brought their own strengths and perspectives to the table, and it was the combination of these talents that made Journey’s music so special. I agree with you that collaboration among the Journey members did bring much success to the band.
While Jonathan Cain certainly deserves credit for his contributions to Journey’s music, it is not accurate or fair to suggest that Steve Perry was somehow less important or less talented as a songwriter. Both men played crucial roles in shaping the band’s sound and legacy. It is only fair to give both Jonathan and Steve the credit they deserve because they were an incredible duo creating classic rock music we love still today.
