"We Are the World" Redo Planned for Haiti Relief

Man, just when we figured out who all the voices were in the first version...

Kidding. The Hollywood Reporter 's story that Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie are planning a 25th-anniversary rerecording of "We Are the World" to benefit earthquake victims in Haiti is awesome news.

Word is, the 21st-century version of the 1985 all-star classic, featuring Richie, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Joel and so many more, was set to be performed on Jan. 28 as part of an anniversary celebration. But when a 7.0 earthquake destroyed the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on Jan. 12, the project turned into a fundraising opportunity.

Usher, John Legend, and Natalie Cole are among those who have been invited so far, but we imagine that list will greatly expand in the coming days.

The celebration, which will spawn a single and music video, has been rescheduled for Feb. 1, the day after the Grammys, at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater.

Legend is among the confirmed performers for Friday's multiplatform Hope for Haiti: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, which will air live on E! and be streaming at E! Online.

Proceeds from the original "We Are the World" went to USA for Africa, with one of the earliest live performances of the song taking place at Live Aid, where nearly 100 artists gathered onstage to sing what ultimately became a quadruple-platinum hit."

They should try and get back as many of the original members that sang on this to do this again. I just can't imagine others singing the parts that Steve Perry, Daryl Hall and Huey Lewis sang on the song.

The section of Steve Perry followed by Daryl Hall -- vocally, it really doesn't get any better than that!

That song that We Are The World bandwagoned off of, Do They Know It's Christmas was far superior.

I liked the anniversary idea, but with the same "old school" group.......a reunion of people, not a remake of the song with new people

They didn't even bother mentioning Perry. They, too, realize his singing career is dead.

They'll need someone to sing Kim Carnes part too - how is it that she had a singing career? :? I wish someone would write a new song, but I don't remember anyone bothering to do that for the victims of Hurricane Katrina unless it was an angry rap song directed at President Bush that they couldn't play on the radio. Did anyone do a song for the Katrina relief effort?

Back in '85 there was the American 'We Are the World', the UK 'Do They Know It's Christmas?', and of course, the Canadian version, 'Tears Are Not Enough' - despite being written by Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance and David Foster, it was such that DJ's were asking listeners to donate money so they could stop playing it! With singers like Burton Cummings, Geddy Lee, Mike Reno and Bryan, they could have really written something that showcased their voices and knocked it out of the ballpark, but this was pretty underwhelming (I don't recognize half of the singers in the background, either):

My guess is they will use all new people. It would be nice if some of the old crew was invited. But I am afraid they will want a "fresh" sound. Wich means people who can't sing as well............I smell a dud. Hopefully they will have a new song.

It needs to be a a reunion of original people, not a remake of the song with new people. The real fans of this original collaboration will be bummed if it is screwed with! Good Morning America mentioned this project on FRiday but did not go into detail, really sounded like hold overs from the Grammies so prepared to be bummed!
