AMEN, Lorrie ...very well stated!!! Was the "some woman named Vivian" comment a joke?!? ...because I am LMAO!!!

 Nope, not a joke. I spoke before I realized Vivian is a man. You know, I was not a Metal/Rock chick. With the exception of Journey, Toto and a few others, I do not know many of the groups you all mention here on MR. Being on this forum has taught me a lot about the world I never quite tapped into. Have a great weekend, my dear! :D

Dio wasn't bitter at Vivian ... he was simply telling the truth.

Boy,, you know it's slow in here when this dead horse rears it's head,, lol

I get that you're just venting, @bionic,,,

but "giving up" implies that we have any choice,,, either in whether Perry ever sings for the public again,, (we don't)

(of course we would be) -

I didn't know cyndy had a soft side,,, lol

"give up" on worrying about it,,, Instead of wasting ti me on 'what ifs' - enjoy the here and now,,

The thing I love about Muse is their unbelievable talent. They have such a mix in their music - prog rock, even metal rock sounding at times, electronica, and then their symphonic rock. Matthew Bellamy wrote and composed everything on their last CD and did a three-part rock symphony on it. Here's my favorite, the third part. Since late 90s there have been few truly original and brilliant artists or bands. This band is one for their uniqueness and vision alone that has carried through five albums.

Exogenesis Symphony (Redemption) part 3 - It gives me chills it's so beautiful.

Even if Perry would come back now, he's 61 and im sure in no way shape or form, ready to tackle all the horrible promotional- crap while leading to a possible tour or even just getting in the music-curve so to speak. At his age and now set in his ways, it wouldn't be easy or really wanted i willing to bet. Being 50 i grew up with Perry's run to stardum as he joined Journey while cutting Infinity and from there became his icon self to date. Of course, Perry's voice was like no other but in that era he was active, the type of music was just flat out different than today. It was rock/ballad and the even did some vocall testing with Perry's riffs. Perry was great at what he did and there will be no other, EVER, like him. I never said better, i said like him. Which brings me to one Adam Lambert. All that being said, pop music is not easy to sing and sing good or maybe form your fan base by the millions. Pop/Eletric is different in alot of areas vocally and the band behind you is adapted or should be to what you as a artist is trying to put out there. Grabbing for any sense of stabillity one might garner over a tough pop-crowd that now is bunched up or a field full of artists to choose from. Lambert caught my eye one winter night near the beginning of American Idol and a year and ahalf later, i know im dead on about him. He has said this is the type of music he wants to make, and maybe he is telling the truth, but the record label he is with calls the shots on his single releases and thought better of him that he become a pop/eletric/rock singer being his best chance to outlive this tough over crowded business. But, as i have listened to him at 18 years old, 22 years old, 24 years old and now, he was then and is now, FLAT OUT VOCALLY AWESOME WITH NO VOCAL COMPETITION technically. I didn't say he was for everyone, i said technically. He is singing Pop/Eletric/dance and doing it frick'en dam well. He has four octaves and can sing in any style, you name it, he can do it and he sings, do it perfectly. No matter what you think of him as a person which is also one of his selling traits because he's NO-SHIT attitude, he is the best out there. I believe, he will go down in history, as a legend as his career fly's off the charts.

Glad you liked Aftermath, @Jana,,,

To be honest, imo, there's not one weak song on the album. It's a rarity, that way..

It's just, the songs are SO varied,, you get wildly different opinions on the strongest songs and visaversa..

Another fave you might like is Broken Open,, (one he also wrote) it's another Journeyesc,, Sarah MacClauglanesc (sp?hah)

With with all this Adam Lambert talk, if my 2 cents is worth anything, the age old question of vocal strength, wear and tear and vocal fold needs to be touched about. Case in point is Hall-Of Famer Steve Perry. If its ever officially released to the world, did he retire from one, or two of the above vocal problems he suffered throughout his historic run.
I doubt he just up and retired because he wanted to. He made to much money, got tired of being told every bridge and note he recorded was gold and beautiful. I don't see it that way. I see it this way as in vocal problems rearing its ugly head to some level. Now, Adam Lambert now 5 months in his career is resting due to vocal strain or a promotional tour thats taken its toll somewhat.
He is scheduled to start his first ever major tour the first week in June. Now, compairing his voice and Perry's has to be technically broken down cause they don't sound alike and they sing different styles in different eras.
Lambert is now a eletric/pop/rock singer where Perry's vocals were based upon the classic 80's rock (ballad/rock). Perry used Sam Cooke's style and a unearthly vibrato that separted him from really any other singer.
Lambert hit's high notes but they are used in different bridges and riffs because frankly times are different and music has changed. All this being said, will Lambert hurt or damage his vocals because he does hit high notes pretty much on a regular basis and plus his style breaths uplifting riffs and bridges that his vocal DNA has structured itself to do.
With his songbook along with stardom/promotional tourning for years to come, this will be interesting because really there is NO OTHER SINGER OUT THERE LIKE HIM. And like Perry, he gives it all live as well, no short cuts at all, pure vocal confidence and ability.

It all comes down to' if he wants to '
There is no doubt in my mind that, if he wanted to he could.
He would not be the Steve Perry of 1981.
But then again, who would expect that.
As much as I hate to be blunt, since at least 2000, Steve Perry has been silent, for the most part.
Yeah, he has put out an occasional vocal masterpiece, such as ' A Brand New Start ' with David Pack... but other then that, nothing really.
Other vocalists, even from one and two decades before Steve Perry's prime were still touring and making music while Steve Perry was doing little other then an occasional' maybe' or ' I'm working on stuff'

If I had any influence at all on him, I would simply tell him this.
There are a lot of fans who want to hear you, and no, you don't have to sound like '1981 Journey'
Even Arnel does not sound like that.
No one could or ever will.

You could put out music NOW and I bet you would pretty much own the adult contemporary market.
At the same time......
The window of opportunity does not remain open forever.

If you are satisfied with what you already gave, and you simply have nothing left, just say so, but otherwise,.....
Put out what you have written, and let your voice, and your music speak for itself.
Vocalists SING, and your a VOCALIST

Just DO it

aaahhhh,, we can only hope, @shaneslatts!

and for me, at least, all the talk ie whether he could still sing the high stuff is quite mute,,,,,
I actually prefer the deeper voice, as in your musical selection,, Faithfully.

the high stuff is very pretty.. but that deeper voice is more soulful.,, and much more sensual

If I were to guess, Steve Perry would be a step down from his preformance in 1994.
The thing is, people would still want to hear him sing. And yes, he could even pull off 'Faithfully' a step down from his NYC preformance.
The ONE thing that wont change much is his TONE. That will remain the same.
People would hear that unmistakeable tone and know right away who that voice belongs to.
No one would expect the crazy high end vocals. If Steve Perry thinks that what his fans 'want', I think he is wrong.
They just want to hear him, and what they ' heard' was his tone.
Thats really all he needs, and I would be willing to bet that he could still reach notes that not too many preformers could match, even today.
Just DO it.
