That is too sad for Perry. I can't imagine what it must be like. Such a loss for himself. No wonder he stays out of the limelight.

What is a "physical discomfort", sounds too vague..

Just goes to show just how much of a liar Perry is. Months ago he was pitching his 50 song story and now he's gone, Why does this guy fuck with his fans heads
so much ? I never believed it anyway buy some did . McCartney is 68 and still kicking ass, Perry is 60 and sitting on it,

Steve should adopt this as his theme song. He was but no longer is and we have to just realize this. He probably wants to be heard again just as much as we want to hear him and has always planned on returning but as the years go by, it gets harder and harder. I don't feel that he has ever misled us and his non-performance has no doubt tormented and mistified him more than it has his fans. In the long run, it's said that "Whatsoever Is, Is Right" so maybe what we did get from him is more than enough and more might have been less in his way of thinking.

What Was

What was I to do?
Never should have called me up.
What was I to do?
Haven't we both had enough?

I still think of you,
Even though we're miles apart.
What was I to do?

The fire is still there,
My heart is too scared to fall again.
It's a little too late because,
We'll never change what was.

There you go again,
Girl, it's never going to end.
It's something we can't have,
We must let go.

I want so much to say,
I love you more today.
The hardest thing I've ever had to say,
Goodbye.

What was I to do?
Never should have called me up.
What was I to do?
Haven't we both had enough?

Oh, the fire is still there,
My heart is too scared to fall again.
It's a little too late because,
We'll never change what was.

It's a little too late because,
We'll never change what was.
PEACE!

"Andrew" Don't ask me how or why, but my information is that Steve still suffers physical discomfort from singing for any length of time and simply cannot do it.

Your information is correct. Perry's vocal cords are destroyed, He has over sang for so many years that is voice is permanently hoarse,
Only way out is surgery and you can forget that one, Steve Perry's career is over

Old news. Herbie told us YEARS ago that Perry "tried everything and has gone to everyone but there's just nothing left." But no one believed him. Believe him now?

Might be the infamous Castles Burning interview with Matthew McCarty or some such, but I know Herbie definitely brought it up in the '08 interview with Andrew.

2008 is correct, Gideon. Here is the verbatim quote:

"Despite the logic, the unavoidable logic, that if Steve Perry was still in the band, and I know that there's a giant public out there that would love nothing more, they're clueless to the fact that the guy can't sing anymore."

"I've heard that he's gone to the greatest vocal teachers and got the best help that you can get and it's just not there anymore. "

I tend to believe this but, then again, I wouldn't trust Herbie's word any farther than you could throw him and, judging by his size, I don't even think I could throw him forward but would, more than likely, collapse and have him fall backwards, crushing the life out of me.

What about Steve Lukather's somewhat recent comment
about SP still having The Voice when he heard him in the studio
during a visit Steve made there...???

It's simply an issue of bias.
Herbie, Perry, Neal, Lukather, anyone and everyone has biases, particularly when dealing with family, friends, or those heavily involved with our day-to-day lives.
Lukather admits that he loves all of the guys: He won't say a bad word about any of them. By your reckoning, then, is Neal blameless in Journey's affairs? Of course not!

The reason I'm inclined to believe Herbie (though not unconditionally) is because he heaps shit and praise everywhere. Though he believes Perry to be the reigning King of Assholes, he also acknowledges Perry's skills as a singer, his abilities as an artist, and had defended Perry (remember the 'Open Arms' fiasco when Jon and Neal were harassing him? It was Herbie to the rescue.) Likewise, though he is a devout supporter and champion of Neal, he sided with Perry and argued against Neal pursuing a solo career (Behind the Music, Director's cut), he constantly berates the band for their inept decisions in both creative and business spheres.

Essentially, he has nice and not so nice things to say about all of them, which is more realistic than a person who simply heaps praises or attacks towards one person or a group of them.

True. Herbert has been saying extremely contradicting things in this interviews....i recall about Augeri , first 'he was the best guy for the gig' and then (after 2006) he couldn't understand 'how the band went with him in the first place..'

Yup, he also said early on that Augeri really stepped up and owned those songs.
