Aaron wrote:Christ Mac, I'm begining to question your judgement. HTF can you omit "Any Way You Want It" from the rocking disc? This is arguably the best rock song ever.

Second omission, "The Party's Over" from the chilling disc. Weeping Jesus on a pogo stick, that song may be the best song Journey has ever done. When written and performed by Christ himself, how can you argue that.

I think you've missed some brother. If you get a chance listen to Infinity, Evolution, Depature and Captured. There is a lot GREAT music there prior to Escape.

Anyway You Want It sounds so dated now. Esp the guitar sound.

I have the albums....I know them....I just don't play them anymore.

(But a crime "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" isn't on it -- what a song.)

Quite possibly Perry's finest vocal moment, IMHO.
My girlfriend said it was "too 80s" and "overdramatic" and subsequently experienced domestic abuse for the first time.

I definitely agree. His dynamics are off the charts in this tune. And the way his vocals soar over Neal's guitar lines during the solo induce chills.

Agrees with Aaron here.
I couldn't believe the reads when I saw that you didn't include any of the earlier stuff.
Something To Hide, The Party's Over, Winds Of March, Patiently or Dixie Highway would have made fine choices.
I protest!
Pick one of em Wombat or it's the fry pan for you Fella!

What about Send Her My Love? JSS nailed this in concert.

Mac, I understand where you're coming from but I disagree 100%. Any Way You Want It has great vocals, great vocal harmonies and straight ahead rock and roll guitar. It's a pure classic in my mind. I think the guitar is one of the areas that made Eclipse a POS in my mind and 100% in yours. The low tone guitar on City Of Hope is the most offensive. I'm sure some folks think it's a modern sound but it's pandering to the tone of the day in my opinion and detracts from Journey's "Feel Good Vibe" tones that took them to their highest success.

That Party's Over is the quintessential rock song show casing Perry's vocals at the height of his capability while Schon lays down a complex groove that hooks you straight away. I'd argue this is one of best vocal and guitar performance of Journey's recorded catalog, if not the best.

Maybe I've listened to Journey enough that I know what I want to hear based on the past and I'm not open approaches different that what I expect. Arnel's vocals are good but not great. It's difficult following Christ as a singer but someone singing Journey needs to be great, not just good.

Anyhow, different tastes make the world go round.

What we can agree on, the new Night Ranger cd Somewhere in California knocks it out of the ball park. 100% +

I personally give 1983-1986 Perry a slight nod over early '70s Perry, but it's the latter that gives my girlfriend chills. She says that within the body of the short skinny white guy is the voice of an old black lady. {Which, coming from a stalwart champion of Adele, is a compliment.}
