I love it. Period! Better than "No Erasin'. This is what i was hoping for. Blusey, lovely voice. Cant wait for the rest to drop. Neal's guitar would make it even more magical. Our boy is really back!

Listened to this a couple of times today.
My first impression is that it’s better than No Erasin’. The vocals seem stronger and the chorus is at least as good as the last one, plus it’s got some good guitar action.

Still not comparable to what SP could put out with equally capable songcrafters like NS and JC, but a very strong effort all the same.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Probably/maybe not, but at this point i'm not even thinking about that. Perry is back and bringing it. I'm also hearing a lot of inferences in both songs that probably refer to his past/or present experience with the band Journey. "I’m so free, I need nobody No more lies, No surprises, No confrontations It’s a peaceful life, behind closed doors"

What is he thinking about when he looks at the camera at 2:28?

Playing this vid on my 50" Panasonic/Onkyo/Klipsch setup sounds fantastic.

I totally agree. So many times during this song, I wondered (and actually could hear) what Neal would have added to it -- those little touches that add so much (Lights, WLAL, etc.). Neal's Fender Strat would have been all over this track. I do appreciate that including Neal in the project would have overshadowed Steve's comeback, but those two together (and JC's skills with composition to clean the tracks up) would have been killer. Nonetheless, like so many others, I'm just thrilled to have Steve back in the game. Really like both tunes and can't wait to hear more.

Seriously- after hearing him sing R&B, why would anyone say "You need to go back to Journey" or "When you going back?" Jesus, his voice is SO TAILOR-MADE for R&B. This is exactly the kind of stuff he should be doing. Very cool. I've been waiting for him to step back into this area for so long. His voice does sound pretty rough but it fits this track perfectly. Digging it.

That being said, a bluesy guitar solo from Schon WOULD be cool here.
Neal should take this song, pop into his recording software and add solos. Just for fun and post it.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Wanna bet Neal does it? I'm hoping he does!

But I totally agree -- Steve's currently vocal capacity begs to sing R&B. So many other singers have greater range than the SP of today, but I really don't know of anyone who has such soulful feel. When I first purchased a Sam Cooke CD after reading of his influence on SP, I was blown away. They are cut from the same cloth. So glad he's back.

Agreed! Especially about Neal working up solos...maybe he'll join him for a surprise live appearance.

Honestly, I love the two songs he's released---and was somewhat expecting this. At the core, he's always been about the melody, and this R&B style suits him well.

An another note, I'm so glad to see the maturity in song arrangement and instrumentation. These parts may sound simple, but there's some serious fills, sounds, groupings of instruments going on. Those guitar parts on No More Cryin' are brilliant for that tune.

The stars are in alignment!

EXACTLY!!

If they ever did a movie on Sam's life, I'm hoping they'd use Perry for the spots where they need 'THAT' voice. Obviously, they'd need to use Sam's recordings, but if there're spots that show rehearsals or something, it'd be awesome if they used Perry's voice for those things. It might a bit too rough now, but imagine this kind of thing (like No More Cryin' or Don't Tell Me Why You're Leavin') on the Harlem Square 63 recording. ha!

At 2.33 mark when he sings the 'OHHH OHHH' he needs 2 more 'OHHH OHHH' .
But that's ok for now Steve, I will sing it for you.

Steve Perry Shares New Video

Steve Perry -- ex-Journey frontman and Del Mar resident -- has shared a new video for "No More Cryin'"

By Dustin Lothspeich / Sep 5, 2018

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/blogs/sound ... 18531.html

"Who's crying now"? Steve Perry, Journey's former frontman and Del Mar resident, has announced a brand-new music video for "No More Cryin'" -- the second single off his upcoming, 25-years-in-the-making third solo album "Traces."

Indeed, nearly a quarter-century has passed since the newly-inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer released his last studio full-length album (1994's "For the Love of Strange Medicine") but, to the delight of music lovers everywhere, the reclusive singer emerged last month with a new album (due out Oct. 5) and music video for its lead-off single "No Erasin'."

Perry's powerful velvety rasp is on fine display throughout the new track -- a wistful ballad (to be honest, few do 'em better) that mixes equal parts soul, R&B, blues and rock together for a compelling love-lost anthem. Co-written with Semisonic's Dan Wilson and featuring the legendary Booker T. Jones on organ, Perry explained that the song is, at least in part, dedicated to his girlfriend, Kellie Nash, who passed away in 2012 following a battle with breast cancer.

"'No More Cryin' is a love song, but not in the way you would think," Perry said in a statement. "It starts in one place, and builds and lands somewhere entirely different. It’s got many overtones, and can be applied to so many different kinds of relationships, including my own relationship with past isolation."

For the unfamiliar, Perry became a sensation fronting Journey from 1977-1987 (and again from 1995-98) while providing the vocals heard worldwide on the rock band's biggest hits like "Open Arms," "Wheel in the Sky," "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" and "Faithfully," among others. His vocals are so unique, he was literally given the moniker "The Voice" by Jon Bon Jovi.

The singer largely disappeared from the music industry after the "For the Love of Strange Medicine" album cycle -- only popping up at the odd baseball game (a longtime San Francisco Giants fan, Perry led a home crowd in a singalong of "Don't Stop Believin'" during the club's 2010 World Championship run), rare one-off performances (he joined the indie-rock band Eels onstage in Minnesota for three songs in 2014, for example) and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year to give an acceptance speech when Journey was inducted.

With his surprise album announcement in August (and subsequent single releases), we're still left wondering if Perry will hit the road at some point. Currently, there's no news on that front but stay tuned to SoundDiego for future updates on tour dates.

When new music comes out I try not to over listen to it until the entire CD comes out so the whole thing feels new. I was able to do that with " No Erasin'", but I can not get enough of " No More Cryin'"... Fantastic song!!!!

I like this much better. I loved the song Go Away, this has that vibe only better. I know Neal is a legend , but Steve’s guitarist here NAILS it. For me this song showcases Steve’s voice better than No Erasin’ does. Love this tune. Went to Target and ordered their extended CD as soon as I heard this one.

Yep, i have no problem whatsoever with the guitar thus far. I'm really digging how it sounds on this song and i can't express enough how much i like this tune. Right up there with everything he's done as a solo artist as far as i'm concerned. He has something special going on here.

I have wondered that myself. If you go thru the various performances he did with the Eels, he surprises on Sam Cooks 16
sounding smoother and hitting some nice notes. That being said if he has any inclination of performing the new songs live
its smart to stay within a comfortable range. As far having to perform any Journey material now that guy on the records sure
has made that a pain in the ass for everyone else.....including himself...:)

I've always wanted SP to do a virtual duet with Sam Cooke...the way Natalie, and her father pulled that duet off.

Very surprised this hasn't been done.

There was a show on Sam Cooke's life. My mouth was agape for the whole hour watching that American Masters series featuring Sam Cooke on PBS few years back. Sad ending to the singer’s life, cut short tragically, to be sure. It was amazing watching/listening to the old video sequences of SC singing. God, that guy sounds just like SP (lol) .. :P
