SP made a spur-of-the-moment decision to show up and surprise the fans gathered at the star. He knew about the gathering because CP & I were in L.A. on a business trip and talked to him the day before. He knew we were planning on meeting a group of fans at the star the next day. He was also in town on business and thought it would be neat to pop in and say hello. It was not pre-arranged by Kathy or anyone else. The visit had nothing to do with which group of fans were there.

It was a really special day and one I will always remember. One of the fans there, Chrissy, has since died. I hung out with her a bit that day because she seemed so nervous and shy and I wanted to make sure she did talk to Steve. After she met SP, she turned to talk to his bodyguard. She told him, "I've met Steve Perry. Now I can die happy." I found out months later that she did die of cancer. I believe the meeting that day at the star was for Chrissy and I'm really grateful that she saw one of her dreams realized.

So glad you were able to make Chrissy's wish come true...I only knew her from the forum and she was always sweet...innocent. No, she didn't know she had advanced cancer at that time...it was only months after the WOF and she was gone...only 35 and a mother of three young children & expecting a fourth - breaks my heart again thinking about her. So, yes even in all the weirdness that surrounded this she was there to meet one of her favorite singers. Reminds me of another sweet lady, also a mother of a young child, who was a fan on the official forum a few years ago & a fan of Neal's...she also got to finally meet Neal and then suddenly passed away in her sleep not long after...I cried for her, too. I better get outta here or I'm gonna have to get the tissue box.

Awwww. I remember us all going for lunch after and right in the middle of lunch her eyes watered and you could tell it had just sunk in who the heck we had just met! No one knew she had cancer, I'm not sure if she even knew at the time. She was such a sweet person and God must have needed another angel pretty badly to pull her from her husband/children so young.

It was so much fun going to lunch with everyone. Like you, I could tell she was deeply moved by the whole thing. She talked about her husband and kids a lot and in such a loving way. I exchanged a few emails with her in the days following the meeting but then lost touch. How terribly sad that she was taken from her family so young.

It really was, and I'm sure to you and Cyndy, for the first 10 minutes we all must have had that shocked look on our face.....like what the heck just happened.  I have to laugh though cuz I'm sure my face looked the same way in Southbend at MRFest the first time I met Eric Martin.  I remember showing you my cd that he had just signed to me. LOL, I'm such a spaz!

That was one of the best parts of the whole day...seeing a dozen people standing there stunned with complete shock and disbelief on their face.

After Steve started mingling and talking, almost everyone relaxed (okay, some cried a bit). Then after he left, we all went to lunch to decompress and discuss every little detail. The staff at Mel's probably thought we were nuts.

I remember I was about to go out to Hollywood Blvd that day and show up uninvited (I think I had been banned and then reinstated), but being lazy, I couldn't justify getting up that early. I'm still not sure if I regret that or not. I'd love to meet Steve but it probably would have been ruined for me by drama.

Btw this is the most interesting/entertaining thread in a while on this board. It's bringing back a lot of memories for me.

Never is a long long time. :( I guess I'm more optimistic to believe that Steve has a heart of gold,
and if the right situation presents itself that he would meet and greet his fans again someday.

We met up and went for margaritas up in Burbank that night too and were still.....

It's funny, cuz I think I was one of the first people that saw him. I remember we were all milling around talking about shopping, etc. with you and C, and I was babbling to a friend there about going across the street to get my daughter one of those WOF keychains with her name on it. When I saw someone who I thought must have been a celebrity because he had this secret service type looking guy with the shades, walking beside him. Couldn't see who it was until they were almost right there cause there was other tourists/people walking in front of them. When one of the people stepped out of the way, I saw the hair and knew it was Perry. LOL I remember when he walked up all non-challant asking......if anybody knew where the Journey star was? I was so stunned I started backing up, not one word coming out of my mouth, but my brain screaming.....Holy Shit! Holy Shit!   I remember talking to Ami after and she said she had the exact same first reaction, she started backing up and was so stunned she almost bolted away down the block.

Deb, how many people from Perryville met there? Were they all women? Did everyone that was there get a picture with him? Just curious.
Also interesting that he had a bodyguard with him if it was spur of the moment to come there. He doesn't normally run around with
a bodyguard, at least we don't see pictures of him with one nearby. With a group of people, I can see why he would want one with him.

Probably about a dozen of us. Two of us from Canada (BC & Alberta), 5 or 6 from Cali and other parts of the States. And yes, we all took a group pic or two, then it was Steve who suggested we could all do individual pics if we wanted. Gary, Jill's hubby, was the only guy. And he's like this 6'5" tall drink of water.....their pic was great!

It wasn't totally spur of the moment, like Lora mentioned......she had spoken with him the day before. If I were him I'd have a bodyguard too, for one he's surprising a group of people he's never met......and it was right out in the open on a busy street. A few other people, once they realized who he was, stopped also.

Since many of us never went to the PV site, does anyone still have pics they could post here of that day? or are those pics too personal to the individuals?
I have never seen any of them, only the one of Crissy that was just posted here. Are there others that anyone would be willing to post?

After Steve started mingling and talking, almost everyone relaxed (okay, some cried a bit). Then after he left, we all went to lunch to decompress and discuss every little detail. The staff at Mel's probably thought we were nuts.

LOL, I made an AV from a portion of the vid. I was heavier then, and my first time trying out blonde highlights......never again.  Image

Not that I know of. But ya, he was very down to earth, funny and a super nice guy. That's why it pisses me off when people say he doesn't give a shit about his fans. As you can see, that's total BS. He had absolutely nothing to prove or gain by taking that time out to surpise a small group of fans like that. I have no idea what he was like back in the height of the Journey craze, but can definitely vouch for him being a pretty stellar human being nowadays. :D

Deb. You can tell that he cared about what he was doing there too, because he dressed up in a coat and tie for the occasion.
He felt it was important enough to look his very best for his fans. Those dozen of you were the luckiest fans because it was such a small
group that you were able to have some quality time with him. I bet he really enjoyed it himself because you all gave him something special too.
I know it must have touched him in his heart that he was the focus of all your attentions that day. You made him feel good and he made you all feel good.
Just makes me a puddle on the floor to see that kind of real personal human interaction going on. Was this meeting before or after the WOF?

Were you there?
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

 Looks like Kathy put it up anyways, without permission from Jill and Gary.

I'm lmao, so freakin' stunned I've got my purse under my arm there like a football........death grip on it.

SPF in Oregon, I think SP enjoyed it just as much as we did. When he went bouncing off down the street, he turned back around a couple times from down the block to wave. And this meeting was about year after the WOF ceremony. I love the part in that clip of Jill almost hyperventilating before he gets to her......with her hubby snickering behind the camera.
