ASSUMING A NEW CD IS IMMINENT...

Postby Jubilee » Tue Aug 11, 2009 2:47 am

What are you hoping to hear? I've heard some people say they're hoping for a rocker, some hoping for a couple of Sam Cooke covers, some who say they'll be fine with anything. Personally, I'm hoping he finally becomes the R&B singer he was always supposed to be. I'd like to hear something up tempo with a sort of sexy, smooth vibe. Maybe a few mid-tempo rockers. (But please, Mr. Perry, I beseech you, no more wrist slitters).

Your thoughts?...[/b]

Well, I'm up for anything, but I would bet on something really similar to FTLOSM. I think that's kinda what he does and what he's comfortable with now. Mid tempo, a little rock, maybe some acoustic stuff like Missing You etc....

I really have no idea, and think it depends on what his voice is like. Maybe it's taking a long while because he really wants to match what he writes to what he sounds like singing.

I know that Russ Miller only said that "Steve sounds fantastic, as usual".

Most of his other solo work was about his life at the time so it may about finding himself, finding peace in family and friends and maybe some bittersweet memories of the past.

I often wondered about his FTLOSM album. It weemed he was explaining himself, his drive and his aloneness and something intangable..........

I so agree with you Jubilee, R&B all the way! He always had that in him, I am amazed he had not done that already. I know he threw alot of it in his FTLOSM era. The only problem with the Sam Cooke thing, Seal had a CD out with Sam Cooke songs. So I don't know if it would be allowed, I guess it would be up to the person that is giving permission for the songs to be used. I would love to hear him do alot of blues. He was so made for it. I just can't wait until this comes out, I was hoping sooner though.

Andrew did say that he was speculating so it might be sooner. I've had 2009 in my sig since I heard that it was to be this fall.

I'm not picky...anything his heart desires! Last night I actually had a dream about this...SP was singing outside at some mid-century house with a tropical setting, lots of people milling around and it sounded beautiful! All I remember now is the word destiny was in the song (it wasn't the 'Dream after Dream' song & I haven't listened to that one in months)...wish I could remember my dreams better, but I was also taking care of my little one with a fever and can't recall it all in detail now, especially the words.

Had I my druthers I would like to hear an album baring Perry's Portugese roots and sung in Portugese, I adored Gloria Estefan's mi tierra. Alternatively, R&B. An album of anything that suits his voice, either traditional R&B tunes or songs written by himself with R&B flavor. But again, Perry could sit on a toilet out in a field singing the Canadian National Anthem...don't care just sing.

Have a great week! MBPL :D

Mocha baby you are too funny the Canadian National Anthem!   If he sings in Portuguese, I would only understand some of the words. What about the rest of it? On a toilet seat out in the field.

While I loved Street Talk, I also loved FTLOSM.......he can sing anything in my eyes (well, except I wouldn't want him to go the rod stewart route and sing covers of other people's hits - not that I think he would ever do that, he's much too talented for that!!)

I would be curious to hear what he has been keeping in his vault all of these years.....

That's what I had originally heard and had posted. I have since thought it would be a little later, going by Andrew's information. He's the one that would know the most, by far.

I'm hoping it's all new. I don't want to have waited all this time on to find out it's like a greatest hits album with a few previously unreleased songs. Frankly I hope it has more of a Street Talk sound to it. I liked a couple songs from FTLOSM, but given a choice between the two I'd have to take Street Talk.

I think he should at least put 'Let Him Go' on the darn thing, that high pitch in that song make my hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

What I would love to hear is melodic rock with catchy upbeat tunes, etc, etc. What we're probably going to get is a cd of soft, piano driven ballads. I don't think Steve is going to rock out on this one. ;)

Wasn't crazy about FTLOSM. R&B is his calling and I hope he goes in that direction. I have heard that Sam Cooke's family had said once that they really believe that Steve and only Steve has the voice of power and influence as the man who invented soul once had. So I think an album of Sam covers would be perfect. :D

Well, for me I just want to hear new music. I'd rather it not be covers or just a bunch of old stuff thrown together. I have to admit, when I got my Playlist, I was sort of disappointed with it. I think Perry will WOW us with fresh new material that has some rock and blues in it. I for one think he will want to show the world he's not too old and is still "The Voice".

I think he has been sketching ideas and writing songs for that last 15 years. Can you imagine the collection he has? OMG.
He could make lots of albums from what he has already. I think he will pick and choose the songs he thinks are his best work
and put those on the new CD. I think he would not put out anything unless it was PERFECT in his eyes and I believe it will blow everyone away,
as probably his best work ever.

Not to take some of the hearsay that was thrown out on these forums as gospel, but f he did indeed have some type of corrective vocal surgery, perhaps that would have an impact on the type of music that could be on the CD.

Slow tempo definitely fit his latter day voice, but if he medically 'turned back the clock', look out!

Approx 2 years ago, I had a dream, too..... You-all are gonna think I'm NUTS

In my dream, I was watching late night TV; I couldn't sleep....well, I finally fell asleep, but something woke me up...
It was a commercial for Steve's new CD; the commercial was a snippet of his new Music Video - he looked like he did in the BTM Ep.

Then, a voice-over came on, and said: " "One Day You'll Know" ~ the NEW Single from Steve Perry.....on sale now!"

I remember thinking that it had a Marvin Gaye "Sexual Healing" R&B Vibe to it.....hmmmmmm......

If he did get that surgery done and like you say, he is medically turning back the clock, he still has to watch that. He strains it too much it will not work. He has to be very careful with his vocal chords now if it is true about the surgery. I smell a double CD coming out. Maybe I am wrong, but with all the stuff he has been working on over the years, it just might go that route. Wouldn't that be nice? All I know is that Nuno told him if he didn't put the stuff out soon that he was going to break into his house and steal the songs and put them on i-Tunes. Maybe that is what got him motivated, Nuno would do it.

Steve impresses me as a guy who likes to stay current with music. I don't think he's interested in going backwards. I look to some of the people he is writing songs with. I don't see him working with people like Nunno and Rob so he can write R & B tunes. IMO he'd want to make music that is relevant to today. I said it before, if he wanted to sing old R & B covers he could have done that a long time ago. Just as the guitar speaks for Neal, singing & songwriting to Steve is a personal expression of his thoughts and feelings. He said in the GQ interview and also on the recent Q podcast that he started writing again about a year and a half ago. I've always believed that there was never anything wrong with his voice, and that we'd hear from him again when he had something to say. Well he's had time to live and experience life, and now that he's turned 60 (a milestone), this is a good time to look back and reflect on his life again. I am so jazzed to hear what he finally has to say.

Well said jrnyjunky, I just think that all those songs he has never put out there should all be done now. I think it would be a major coup on his part. I say sell CD's, then go for the i-Tunes selection.

Christ, at this point, I'd take the ABCs or Mary Had a Little Lamb. STARVED for it is a good word. However R&B is definitely what he kills at... bring it. Or nursery rhymes, I'm good either way. <--------- certifiable loon answer

I would love at least an 18-20 song CD. If it is 10-12, I don't think I'd be happy knowing how many other songs he created but we may never hear. I still think that Steve should put out a Christmas CD in addition to whatever he releases because I think he would totally kill all other versions of Oh Holy Night. Plus you could then pretty much assure that it would get airplay year after year. But at this point, I guess I'd be happy if he released only a single.

What the hell does immanent mean? Is this a new loon word derived from frigabonics?

Never mind, found it.

1. remaining within; indwelling; inherent.
2. Philosophy. (of a mental act) taking place within the mind of the subject and having no effect outside of it. Compare transeunt.
3. Theology. (of the Deity) indwelling the universe, time, etc. Compare transcendent.
