Steve Perry A Racist?

Postby Peartree12249 » Fri Mar 19, 2010 2:21 pm

I stumbled upon this little tidbit on the internet tonight. Is Steve Perry a racist? You decide.

Steve Perry of Journey dead? No, but he might be racist!
March 18, 2010 10:12 PM EDT (Updated: March 18, 2010 10:14 PM EDT)

Is Steve Perry of Journey dead? Don't...stop believin' internet rumors! The front man of the '80s band (and the rocker who had one of the sweetest mullets ever) is still alive. To say he's dead is just a bunch of mindless gossip. But to say Steve Perry a racist is a whole other story...

In an interview with Playboy set to hit new stands tomorrow, Sarah Silverman told the magazine how the lead singer of a popular '80s band approached her after a show and told her, "You’re my favorite comedian. You have the best n***** jokes." "Whoever would make such an offensive comment? Though Silverman didn't provide a name, she did give a hint, "I’ll just say this: After that, I stopped believin."

Steve Perry is on the defense though. He's gone to Rolling Stone to try to set the record straight. He acknowledged having met Sarah Silverman but denied saying the n-word outright. "I don’t use that word, are you kidding? That’s so derogatory," said the rocker. Steve Perry explained his side of the story saying, "I walked up to her after the show and I said, ‘I can’t believe that somehow you seem to be getting away with all these slurs and the n-word, I just can’t believe how you’re doing this,’ and I looked at my friend and I said, ‘I can’t believe how she’s getting away with this,’ and she looked at me and kind of smiled. It wasn’t like I was condemning her or condoning her, it was just that I can’t believe how somehow creatively she was making everybody in that club of all colors and all ethnic backgrounds laugh. That’s what it was."

This sounds like a he said, she said story. Do you think Steve Perry is racist? Or do you think Sarah Silverman is stretching the truth for attention? She does like to push the envelope and is fairly obnoxious, so who knows what she's capable. But if it's true, hearing "Don't Stop Believin'" late night at the bar might not be the same.

the truth is in the middle. I doubt he said it the way he's saying. He put an awful lot of sentences in there compared to her one sentence. But I doubt he was as short as she said, saying the one line I'm sure he added a little more in the way of an explanation. But I do believe maybe he said the N word, but only that he was using it in the context he said, that he couldn't believe she got away with it as a white girl with all ethnicities in the audience laughing.

I believe his version. If he had been or said anything racist before, as closely as we have followed him during his career and after, I'm sure we would have known about it. I say this is a bunch of bull hockey!

I believe him. I don't care for her at all and I think if he were racist it would have come about decades before now. She's been funny here and there but she's too obnoxious for me. At least her show on Comedy Central was. Her stand up routine might be good- I've never seen her in that capacity- but he has always come across as being classy and someone commented under that RS article- "It is difficult to believe that Steve would have used that terminology…especially as someone who cites R&B music as a major influence in his life! You don’t usually find racism walking hand in hand with that. Plus, he has always come across as a classy, respectful guy." I agree.

The impression I got from reading that brief article was Ms. Silverman using her "comedic license" for effect.

Of course, now Mr. P won't talk to ANYONE!

Sheesh.

Thanks, Sarah.

I say Sarah is the racist... why bring something up from 25 years ago... that was said in context... and becasue its rolling stone she will get away with saying that word..but just by being mentioned...Perry could be hurt... and THAT REALLY is the SHIT... she will get a pass here.... he will have to be defensive it the issue gets any play outside of Rolling Stone magazine... but maybe it will turn up that its non issue....

I wonder if they had this conversation before or after she f***ed Matt Damon?

Methinks this was just a poor joke on her part that's become misconstrued. Unfortunately, she'll get a pass on it and Perry will have to deal with the unnecessary and unfortunate backlash.

If you know anything about Steve Perry then you know it is absurd to think he would ever say that. He is a class act – always polite and never bad-mouthing anyone. Sounds like a Neal Schon stunt or else Sarah is desperate for publicity.

Please!

This is funny stuff!

I believe SP BTW.

I saw those. They're hysterical. I think she will come back and make an apology. Anyone with any sense would know he was talking to her about it in the context of how she gets away with her racial jokes being a white girl, and his informative reply just puts her in a bad light the way she was making it seem he was being racist, when, in fact, it was an observation on her ability to get away with it from all races in the audience. Mark my words, she will do a retraction, saying she was just being funny.

well i think any other press would be more newsworthy then this kind of press. you should hope she'd do a retraction cause noone really wants to be labeled a bigot or racist. he should not say another word and hopes she sets the record straight cause that's just ugly. too many attempts at setting the record straight just makes you look as if you want to undo something you did.

I knew this would be here 1st thing this morning. Late last night I received an urgent text saying Steve Perry of Journey was dead. Of course, back on went the internet, and upon Googling for it, this article came up.

This is laughable in one way, because I would think that Perry would want to come out and publicly and adamantly deny it. Rolling Stone is a good place to start. Hell, who doesn't want to hear him talk about something, anything? Now being a Steve Perry fan, I would like to think this is not a big deal, and that Sarah was not being serious; at least I hope that's the case. Perry, if he said that, and who really knows if he did, was right. She does walk that really fine line well. I think she is brilliant, and I have heard her drop the N bomb many times. As for Perry being racist- no one really knows what's in his head except he himself. I would like to think he wrote Colors of the Spirit with good intentions. I would also like to think he hired Randy Jackson to play bass for the same reason. He has donated money, a fair amount of it, to Democrats and the party. Not saying the republican party is racist, but I can tell that someone who doesn't like blacks would never ever donate to the Dems.

And to those jarheads or fuckhole Loons that commented that Neal Schon and Jon "Caine" implied that Perry was a racist should go swimming at Sea World in Orlando. Neal and Jon did not write this stuff or say anything of this nature. Those guys are not racists. Man I tell you, the people who wrote that garbage are exactly that-garbage. Nothing like trying to start a war between the parties again, over blatant lies. This is embarrassing and if Steve saw that crap, he would be embarrassed too and pissed off to no end. My God, most of the Loons are worse than the Cheerleaders.

[/quote]Deano, you really are a good person aren't you? your post makes a lot of good ole fashion sense. You know something as stupid as what she did could destroy him, he seem like such a sensitive person with a very fragile trust in people as is. It was good to see him slowly coming out of his cave, oh well that maybe over now. :(

I'd expect to hear something from Randy Jackson on this. He is media friendly, has always had nothing but positive comments regarding Steve.

 :?

You must have been mildly relieved to find that Perry was indeed alive and well, but apparently a virulent racist (allegedly). Talk about a mad world. Is it really true that any publicity is good publicity??? I don't see a whole lot of upside to this one.

At any rate, I'll kindly step aside while the Perry Anti-Defamation League takes up arms and steels itself for battle. Carry on... 8)
