Voice Lessons?

Postby StElmoQn » Sat Aug 06, 2011 1:28 am

Since SP started out his musical career as a drummer, does anyone know if he took voice lessons as a kid? It's obvious he had the ultimate natural vocal abilities, but how did he get to the pinnacle? I'm sure after he hit the big time, there were vocal coaches to help with the rigors of touring, but the Escape-era vocals were, and are (IMHO) unsurpassed by anyone since.

However, I have to admit, I do prefer the Frontiers and beyond SP vocals...

I think I read that he said he never had any formal vocal training other than singing in the church choir and high school glee club. No doubt he had access to voice coaches while in Journey. I believe there was mention of a rather famous woman voice coach in S.F. that Steve was supposedly a client of.

It's my understanding from a good source that Steve was trained in opera back when he was young. It makes sense with the vibrato that he has.

I read an interview not long ago with John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting who said when he was just getting started he went on a quest to find Steve Perry's voice teacher - which he said eventually did. He did not name the voice teacher but he did say to this day he still uses the warm-up exercises before shows and said maybe that's why he is able to sing all the high notes :)... He also refers to Steve as "The Voice" and when I replied to a tweet of his that Steve Perry was my all time favorite he responded that he was always happy to take a back seat to "The Voice". How cool would it be for those two to write and sing a song together... might be Perry's modern day Cain????
