He's not a copycat. He has to sing the old songs the way they're written, and why would he not want to? As for new songs, he sings in a similar range to Perry ( & Augeri as well) but does not sound like he's trying to mimic anyone.

I don't think Pineda has any song writing credits on City of Hope.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

It doesn't matter what Neal says. Follow the tweets during and after every show and you'll find what the average fan believes, that Journey has an "Asian Guy" that sounds just like the Perry.
Hey, it's what he is paid to do. With a setlist of 15 songs, when 13 of them are from the Perry era, of course it's all about copying the guy. That's what Pineda was hired for.
What's amazing is how many of these younger people know Perry's name but are a bit lost about who Pineda is. That's the Greatest Hits syndrome right there.

Of course. Perry was a household name while they were growing up, as he was when my kids were growing up. 20 years from now kids may know who Pineda is too.

Today the kids know the 60 year old ex lead singer of Journey. In 20 years they will know the name of another 60 something ex lead singer of Journey.

What leads you to believe this? Four years in the band, Oprah, two album releases, a DVD, over 200 shows and people still don't remember Arnel's name. How is that going to change 20 years from now?
Eclipse is back to moving 200 to 500 copies a week only two months after release. The band releases songs to radio yet won't play them live.
What is going to happen to make Pineda a recognizable figure in the next decade or so?

I'm an optimist, I guess. I don't believe the band has reached the peak of their success with Pineda yet.

What's even more amazing is that Perry isn't a household name by any stretch of the imagination. Elvis, Mercury, Plant, and even Kurt fucking Cobain are etched into the public consciousness, but the lead singer of the 20th century's most downloaded song? Nah, he's faded into obscurity like the rest of his band. Perry's not even close to these giants in terms of name recognition.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

I would say that he has a bit more recognition than some of his AOR peers like Lou Gramm though. Lou was a great vocalist but still pretty much part of a faceless band. I think that's one of the reasons that Kelly has been acccepted a lot easier than Arnel has. Also while Lou generally comes off as a bitter man in most of his interviews, Perry seems to be better at playing the media for all it's worth when he does stick his head out of his cave.

From my generation I'd say the majority of rock fans know who Perry is (if from nothing else, the round the clock exposure on MTV). Like his band though, it's always been 50/50 as far as who likes him and who thinks he's garbage but the name recognition is there, just not necessarily the respect.

Have to agree with this. Growing up, when a Journey song ended, the DJ would usually say "and that was Steve Perry and Journey." Most people who grew up in the 80s do recognize the name. And Perry didn't have any other type of attention drawn to him. Attention on Cobain was mostly for drugs and such; attention on Mercury was also for his flamboyancy. Elvis and Plant are icons and in a different catagory IMO.

Furthermore, if you don't follow a band closely, you really don't pay attention to the individual members. There are plenty of bands out there that I would enjoy seeing in concert, but I have no idea if the original members are still part of it or if some new guy is singing. :) I think this is the way with a lot of Journey concert goers; people on this forum just see things a little differently. :)

Bullshit. I'll gaurantee you that more people know who Perry is than who Kurt freakin' Cobain is. Perry wrote and sang anthems for all time. Cobain ushered in the shittiest era of rock-n-roll ever. Grunge trash that no one over 15 took seriously.

Perry has more talent in his left hand than Cobain had in is whole body.

I'll give you Elvis, but not the others. Not now, with DSB and the recent stuff. More would know Perry than Cobain, Plant and Mercury.

God, Nirvana sucked.

   This is just, well, priceless! Are you serious with this shit?!? Nirvana was around for like 3 years and moved 50 million albums! This guy was the face of a monumental music shift, like it or not. His worldwide status and popularity is immense. Go to places like Bulgaria, Lithuania, Saudi Arabia, Colombia and Thailand and ask them who Steve Perry is ... and then ask them who Kurt Cobain is! Here's a stat for you that illustrates his popularity:

In 2006, Cobain took the place of Elvis Presley as the top-earning deceased celebrity, after the sale of the Nirvana song catalog. Presley reclaimed the spot in 2007.

Now I realize that Steve Perry is not legally dead, but, for all intents and purposes, he chooses to live a life that makes it seem as though he is.

madsplash wrote:Perry wrote and sang anthems for all time.

He sang them and co-wrote them. Big difference. We know that Jonathan Cain brought Open Arms, Faithfully and DSB into the mix and that Perry helped make them complete. I know of no huge hit that he brought to the table.

madsplash wrote:Cobain ushered in the shittiest era of rock-n-roll ever. Grunge trash that no one over 15 took seriously.

Yeah, yeah, yeah ... and I'm sure the same was said about Journey through the 80's. Only that they were a "chick band." Neither matters, but popularity and sales do. And Nirvana is an incredible part of pop culture.

madsplash wrote:Perry has more talent in his left hand than Cobain had in is whole body.

I'd say that they were both pretty talented individuals. Perry being the far better singer and Cobain the better musician. However, neither of those things matter, as we're talking about popularity.

madsplash wrote:I'll give you Elvis, but not the others. Not now, with DSB and the recent stuff. More would know Perry than Cobain, Plant and Mercury.

Trust me, of those 4 people, Steve Perry is the least popular worldwide. Those other 4 were world renowned artists.

Whether people like it or not, Cobain was a genius...he single handedly changed the face of music forever....and the Foo Fighters are continuing as well...I am not a huge fan, but you NEED to respect where respect is due....Perry vs. Cobain is like comparing the President to a House Representative....he WAS a true artist in EVERY sense of the word....to deny that is fanboydom....

Cobain also got the other band members to give him a retroactive share of 75 percent of the royalties, going back to the album Nevermind, hence Courtney Love having initially a $200 million share in Nirvana's back catalog (she sold off 25% for $50 million in 2006 but has been offered $162 milion for the other 75%).

When we talk about how much money Perry, Schon, etc. make, I think it's fair to say that even with DSB being a huge seller, none of them have anything near the wealth of what Cobain had acquired for basically three albums of work (really two as the first album Bleach was a bust and only picked up sales later when being re-released after Nevermind and even then, only reached platinum in the States).

Changed it for the worse. He single handedly lowered the bar for what a competent musician is supposed to be. The guy knew 3 chords on guitar and had the worst, warbley, off key voice ever.

And the supposed "anthem" that he wrote was just a song for the laziest gereation of teens of all time to rally around about being useless and stupid.

Here we are now, entertain us.  Entertain yourselves, punks.

Nirvana = pointless, angry, nasty, shitty sounding drivel.

That site is bullshit. It shows Pineda worth 15 million which is impossible, it would mean he pocketed every penny Journey made the last three years after taxes and management fees while Jon and Neal made nothing.

Cobain's wealth has been well documented from sources like Forbes, not trash like this site.

Doesn't matter what you think about the music he made, the fact is Nirvana killed off AOR and hairband music and became huge. It was something new and different, and unfortunately, the hairband scene was getting mighty stale at that point.

I would say it was more of the hairbands killing themselves and Grunge stepping in to fill the void. A lot of less than stellar efforts were coming out from the rock scene at that time with many acts buying into their own hype and the erosion of creativity had started in full force.

I think Pineda is more like a "sound-a-like", he does an amazing job of covering Perry's style, but also if you look him up on YouTube (his cover band wad called "The Zoo"), he does a great job covering Sting, Jimi Jamison, and does a decent Robert Plant as well.

The fact is, he is pretty versatile. It may not all be perfect, but considering where he came from, I can't fault the guy for trying to get to somewhere better.

Popularity and notoriety have nothing to do with talent..

Perry is known... but Cobain is "renown"... and will be remembered long after Perry... Cobain is in the "27 Club" after all....

Something else to ponder.... the Nirvana catalog/brand is worth much more than Journeys' ever will be... largely due to Cobain's death... that's notoriety money can't buy... and staying power that marketing companies will pay and pay and pay for...

Journey will need Glee to be the longest running show in history and DSB will need to be the Glee theme song for Journey to have any chance of being remembered after they are done.

Nirvana - you may not like 'em... but you can't deny 'em....

And he covers others quite well.

The fact is, he is pretty versatile. It may not all be perfect, but considering where he came from, I can't fault the guy for trying to get to somewhere better.

Versatile doesn't equal quality vocals and faulting the guy for trying to get somewhere better is not the issue either, good luck to him.

This is Journey's lead vocalist and he is so over rated as a singer never mind any comparisons. wtf.

Journey... "nice guys"??

Yes they are, and in case you didn't notice, their lead singer is one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. The band is very business minded, but yes, they are nice guys too, but they got screwed over by a previous lead singer.....on a couple occasions and they even gave him additional chances. The door is still open too.

Pretty self-serving article, if you ask me. It's not the bashers that are calling Arnel a copycat (some of them do worse)...fact is, plenty of music reviewers, dj's, Journey fans do the same. Neal can defend Arnel all he wants. As long as they're out there playing the DD (songs sung and made famous by their former lead singer), that label will be forever attached to AP. Not that it's Arnel's fault. But does anyone seriously believe, 10 years from now, the songs originated by their current lead singer will be remembered or even talked about by general music fans?
