Steve was gettting it back at the end of the FTLOSM tour..

Postby Liquid_Drummer » Fri Oct 28, 2011 6:23 am

I have listened to a lot of the FLOTSM tour boots but this new stuff (new to me and it was posted in the past couple of months) from Feb 13 1995 in New Brunswick shows him doing more ad libbing, less rasp, cleaner (not perfect) top range and but loads of power and LONG powerful sustains.. Some of the early boots he sounds really bad at times but here at the end not just the power of his voice seemed to be recovering but there is something about the way he singing. More charged.. The whole band sounds so much better.. Listen to this and compare it to earlier shows. I wonder if he was getting back from just USING IT.

Clearing the cobwebs, so to speak?
That doesn't sound unlikely. I mean Perry was old enough that his stamina wasn't what it used to be, like older athletes who have to warm up longer and more carefully, but he was still young enough to retain much of that legendary skill. Good theory.

But all I know is he sounded much weaker on TBF than FtLoSM, which was only what? Two years later? Those sustains you mentioned were long gone.

Shit, listen to this one.. Skip the coat drop. He is just ad libbing like crazy and hits some great powerful highs at the end. Ad libs again none the less. i think he was getting comfortable, learned how to work best around his different set of available tools because he is a very musically smart singer. I am sure he is always thinking many steps ahead of where he was. This show has changed my view on if he could have sang Journey on tour in 96. I think he could have tuned down of course.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwdlOVTgoe0 LTS, this is the best FLOTSM boot I have heard unless I missed something.

Yup....I saw him in Poughkeepsie, NY on Feb. 5th.....sounded so freaking strong!

I really think that's what happened. Singing is a very organic, visceral thing - it's using muscles, just like when you play Sports.
If you don't "exercise them", so to speak, you get "musically flabby".

..sorry; can't think of another term.

3:13 to 3:20 is all that needs to be heard.

That embodies the magic that is SP and why he's regarded as the greatest rock/pop/ballad singer of all time.

By a relatively small segment of the population. Journey and its members have always been criminally underrated and Perry is no exception.

Compared to whom? Of the entire WORLD'S population? Maybe. But of music fans over the age of 20, underated my ass.....

Perry is not "underated".

Ask around and see what "The Voice" means to music fans.

I love your enthusiasm.
You look at the world and seem to genuinely believe Perry to be a household name, topping the countless lists of greatest singers, etc. and so forth.

When I look at the world, I see none of that. What I see is a terrifyingly insignificant Wikipedia page, and a man whose accolades include props from Brian May and Randy Jackson and 76th place on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers of all time.

These are not the accolades of a man regarded as the greatest rock/pop/ballad singer of all time. He might very well be, but Perry's name and skills are without question underrated.

No one who knows anything gives a RAT'S ASS about anything Rolling Stone says or prints.

That rag has been a joke for years and also makes the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a joke.

Like I said, I admire the enthusiasm.
I don't share it, because I'm not going to let my love and appreciation for an artist's talent blind me to their popularity and notoriety.

You might regard Perry as the greatest singer in rock and I might agree, but that doesn't make up for the countless people who disagree. He's not a household name and he's far from universally lauded.

This is one of the best sounding boots on this tour. Never thought about your theory, but you may be have got something there.

I agree with you on this. A man with Perry's talents should be a household name. I don't believe he is. The critics always accused Journey of playing it too safe (musically speaking) and I think that had a lot to do with them never receiving credit they were due.

This is NOT in any way a bash against SP or Journey. I just think it is unfortunate.

I think the reason SP is not universally well known is he was part of a group...not a singer who made it big as a solo artist in the pop genre...ala his contemporaries like Billy Joel, Elton John...heck, throw Rod Stewart, Neil Diamond, in there...and, Barry Manilow. Of course, these artists have a much bigger volume of work than SP's 2 released and 1 unreleased albums.

More people will know the name of the group more than they know the lead singer, as you can say that about just any group that ever lived.

Your and Annie's analysis I think hits the nail on the head. Had Perry came back in 98' and the band continued on and had more hits...things would be different.

HOF would have happened long ago too..

The guy's voice is gone. His hoarse laugh is telling. Nothing was coming back. It was just so bad at the beginning that raising the bar to mediocrity seemed huge. If he COULD sing with Journey he would. But he can't.

That's a fair point, but remember that there are even lead singers of bands who are more famous and recognized than Steve Perry. Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, Robert Plant, Steven Tyler, and so forth. Better singers? Not in my opinion, but talent and success are rarely proportional. The whole of Journey is criminally underrated in the eyes of the public and even among musicians. Perry is not and has never been an exception.

To use his analogy, imagine having kids, and having them taken away from you, only to be raised by someone else. It kills him ... every day.

I just listened to that Euro interview he did about a year ago, and his laugh is so hoarse and hollow. Perhaps SOME of that is from lack of use, but the majority of it is from irreparable damage.

No Offense, but I think you are living in some imaginary land where Steve Perry is sitting in some dark room with a supply of hankies crying his eyes out everyday for What Used to Be. I really don't get why you derive such pleasure from such a fantasy. Read the interview. He is over it. He has gone on with his life. He has new interests and new projects, inside and outside of music. Anyone who has been through a divorce or such knows that no matter how badly you were hurt at first, you move on and live your life. Life is different afterwards, but time does heal wounds pretty well.

And he sounded hoarse when he laughed so therefore his voice is shot??? Ever hear of a cold or allergies?

I'm not saying I agree with their conclusion, I'm just saying that the idea that Perry is a household name and is universally regarded as some sort of vocal titan is silly. His vocal abilities were amazing; but his name recognition is hardly proportionate.

Did that "Voice" make the Top 100 Singers List?

Doen't matter. Ask any music fan in Australia who "The Voice" is and and none of them would say Perry, and all of them would say John Farnham...That's just the way it is. If

This entire "The Voice" thing did not come about until the mid-90's when boots showed up with Bon Jovi calling referring to Perry that way. Perry fans grabbed onto that, exaggerated it, and made into something it never was while he sang in Journey. He was never known as "The Voice' prior to 1995 or so.

Farnham is indeed The Voice here in Oz. and Glenn Hughes is the voice of rock.

But Perry still had the best voice ever in his prime.

I don't know if I agree with the tense of your statement, Andrew. I really don't feel that Perry is the kind of person that would truly strive to keep his fans guessing if he didn't feel that he still had some quality to his vocals, be it in a diffenent range or texture. Many of us loved his later work with the husky, raspy maturity and even he told you that he wondered at all the highs he tried for early on. It was alright for his age at that time but those vocals coming out of the mouth of someone his age now would be sound like a Martian, as, I think it was, Lionel Richie once stated after hearing him sing Open Arms at an awards event.

I think that he knows what he has to offer now and it will be as magical for the man who is Steve Perry now, just as it was magical for the Steve Perry then. God, I hope that I get to hear it before' I check out. I am probably your oldest poster and have loved many great voice's in my time but I never knew what the magic was until I heard Perry's. He is my once in a lifetime vocalist.
PEACE!
