The 'Against The Wall' tracklisting

Postby KingdomOfMan » Thu Aug 02, 2012 5:17 pm

We're all aware of this 'unreleased' album, from the Greatest Hits+5 Unreleased and other bonus tracks elsewhere. However, does anyone know the exact tracklisting for the album in it's completed form, or if not, a list of all the intended songs for the album as he would've wanted it? Thanks

I doubt if it had an official tracklisting, from what I remember after the Record Company Execs heard it they didnt feel it would be a hit.
was this 91-92? When Grunge was starting up or 89-90?
I remeber in 88 Steve said he didnt even listen to music for 2 years.
So I assume 91-92?

What I would really love to hear are the original songs on "Freedom", before they rerecorded the whole labum and renamed in ROR.
I remember a comment is that some of the songs sounded more like a scorpions album, and the synths were strong as Frontiers.

There had to be a full track listing if it was presented to the company for consideration. Even if it wasn't a record company endorsed track list, there had to be a Steve Perry track list at some point. I'd like to know what that is too.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but this is news to me. You're saying they started recording tracks for Freedom that are unrelated to what we hear on ROR?

I always thought Perry didn't want to do another Journey album after the success of Street Talk but his mother convinced him to go back to Journey for ROR. He did, but with the understanding that he was running the show. If he was running the show from the get-go, how was a "freedom" version of the album was ever recorded?

Any links to this discussion elsewhere Scarab?

They were right. Street Talk and FLOTSM were flawed, but lightyears ahead of that crap.
And I thought it was 89.

Heard about the Freedom to ROR on a Rockline back in the day. (They never mentioned Freedom) HEard about that later.
Steve said he wasnt happy with the sound, and wanted to do something different.
He said Journey was cloned to death and when he came back in Jon and NEal had already written some songs.
They recorded a few songs and he wasnt happy with the sound, fired Ross and Smith and they rewrote the whole album.

Had the cassette tape of the pre ROR rockline for ages.
They also did a local interview which confirmed some of the rockline interview.

Freedom was the name that Herbie had lined up for the follow-up album to Frontiers. From what I've read over the years, Freedom only existed in name.
There was supposedly a bunch of material that was recorded and scrapped, but that was phase 1 of the ROR sessions. I don't believe there was ever any material recorded under the title Freedom.

I also remember reading a bitter quote by Perry way back during the ROR promos about Survivor. Can't recall what it was exactly, but something about 'yeah, can you believe what those guys are doing!' So the theory of too many Journey clones and wanting to go in a different direction makes sense.

Yeah, I think he was pissed because in his mind, they were just a Journey knock off. Wasn't that also the interview where it was mentioned that Perry sounded like a battered seal?

So he was jealous they won the Grammy and he didn't? Further proof Neal wasn't the only egomaniac in Journeydom.

Someone copies what you do, they get the kudos for it, while you get passed over and ridiculed -- this is not an example of egomaniac behavior. He's asking for fair consideration. I'd feel the same way. I think most people would.

Nah, he's whining about someone else's. Petty and childish, really.

I'll try to get back on topic.

I've never seen an official track listing for the "Against The Wall" album. From my time searching the internet the songs that have been used in an attempt to make an ATW album are listed below. I've seen many different orders of songs. So there is no one correct track list. Maybe there are those out there that have more info then I am able to find.

When You're in Love (For the First Time)
Against the Wall
Forever Right or Wrong (Love's Like a River)
Summer of Luv
Melody
Once in a Lifetime, Girl
What Was
If You Need Me, Call Me
Can't Stop
Friends Of Mine
It Won't Be You

My version is in the following order:
Summer Of Luv
Against The Wall
Can't Stop
When You're In Love (For The First Time)
Once In A Lifetime, Girl
If You Need Me, Call Me
Friends Of Mine
Melody
Forever Right Or Wrong (Love's Like A River)
What Was
It Won't Be You
Oww. My aching tentacles.

Are you sure all those tracks are from Against The Wall? The reason I ask is because there was a 5 track LP released by Sony post FTLOSM (and years before greatest hits plus 5), which had photos of Perry sourced from FTLOSM as the cover. Those tracks were:
If You Need Me, Call Me
Melody
Forever Right Or Wrong
What Was
It Won't Be You

Yes, absolutely. All of those tracks I listed have been mentioned on at least three SP releases as being from the aborted ATW album.

When You're in Love (For the First Time)
Against the Wall
Forever Right or Wrong (Love's Like a River)
Summer of Luv
Melody
Once in a Lifetime, Girl
What Was
Are all listed on the inside of the GH+5U cd as being from that album.

If You Need Me, Call Me
Can't Stop
Friends Of Mine
Are listed on the 2006 re-release of FTLOSM as being from that album.

It Won't Be You
Is from the CD maxi single of "Missing You" and is listed as being from that album.
