Journey’s Steve Perry Shows Up At Eels Concert At The Orpheum

When you think about the intimate, brainy, self-deprecating songs of Mark Oliver Everett, you don’t necessarily think about… Journey’s Steve Perry, right? Nevertheless, after an epic show at the Orpheum in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, Steve Perry appeared on stage at the third encore (yes the third one!) and gave to the cheering crowd — who at that point was in a standing ovation mode — a second Journey mini-concert after an already long Eels concert.
I had no idea Perry loved the Eels, but he really does, he covered ‘It’s a Motherfucker’ and gave to the song a total new dimension. Imagine, ‘the Voice’ singing this line ‘It’s a motherfuuuuuuucker’ as if it was a Journey song! It was a very unique moment touching and so odd and beautiful. This made everyone laugh which is the best way to enjoy one of the most depressing songs of the Eels’ repertoire. Then backed-up by the band, he did Sam Cooke’s ‘Only Sixteen’, and three Journey songs: ‘Open Arms, ‘Lights’, ‘Lovin’, Touchin’ Squeezin’. It was a treat and an expected guest (although Mark had announced it on the airwaves when he was part of Morning Becomes Eclectic’ on KCRW the same day).
Perry has not sung with Journey since 1991, and Mark said he hadn’t performed in Los Angeles for 20 years! Nevertheless, his voice is still great, and although he said he was a bit out of breath after singing ‘Lights’, he can still totally hold the high notes in a very amazing way.
