SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The image of Steve Perry, former lead singer of Journey, dancing and singing in the aisles of AT&T Park while rooting for his hometown San Francisco Giants, likely tainted last season's Royals' sixth-inning anthem forever.
Royals fans had chosen "Don't Stop Believin'" as the sixth-inning song played at Kauffman Stadium in 2014 -- that selection, of course, stopped once the Royals met the Giants in the World Series. The replacement song became KISS' "I Want to Rock and Roll All Night."
Now, the Royals are once again letting the fans vote for a new sixth-inning anthem through a Play it Forward contest.
The Royals have picked 16 songs that got the highest vote totals last year and those songs will square off in a bracket-style competition beginning Opening Day on April 6.
The two songs for each particular game, as well as instructions on how to vote, will be announced during pregame. The winning song for each game will be played in the middle of the sixth inning and will advance to the next round until the winning song is revealed on May 6.
