Funny story for you.
My sister called me at work. I don't answer. She calls again immediately. I'm thinking it's an emergency so I answer. She sounds panicked tells me she has someone with her who I must speak with. She puts a guy on the phone who says “hi, I hear you're a really big fan of mine.”
I'm like... Huh? There's something familiar about this guy's voice but I can't place it.
I'm at work under deadline so I'm a little short with the guy. I ask who I'm speaking with.
He asks me, "who am I a fan of?" Now I'm recognizing the voice. It's Steve.
I say his name and he laughs says surprise.
My sister ran into him in West Hollywood (back in early February). When I say ran into, I mean she accosted him, lol... He was at an eatery they both frequent. No I won't tell you which one. She said he sat a table near her and she recognized him instantly. He was rather surprised by that, said a lot of people come up to him thinking he's Jon BonJovi (if you can believe that).
She started by gushing about her own fandom. Talked about being introduced to Randy Jackson by a work relationship. Told Steve how she wasn’t interested in Randy for American Idol, she was interested in his time in Journey. They took a selfie together, then she went on about me and how I was responsible for her exposure to Journey and that her first concert was going with me to see Steve’s FTLOSM tour at the beacon in NYC. Steve said call your brother so i can talk to him.
We spoke for about 4 minutes.
Steve thanked me for my support on Traces. AT THAT TIME, he told me about his plans for his next release was acoustic recordings of 7 songs from that album, and then he was moving on from it. He said he’s releasing on Vinyl, but will also be available in other formats. Really pushed the vinyl though.
This can be corroborated by Laura. I sent her a private message back in February. Much of what you just read was cut and pasted from it with a few alterations. It's still sitting unread in my private message outbox so I'm pretty sure she never saw it. It's date stamped though. She can still read it if she wants now. Of course I have the selfie she took with him and I can visually prove she's my sister too, lol... Crazy this all happened before Covid changed the world...
The reason I reached out to Laura was to find out if it was okay to speak about the release publicly. Steve didn't say either way on the phone but I didn't want to betray a confidence if one was implied.
Anyway, it was absolutely surreal to speak with him. He was incredibly kind and gracious. I think he really liked surprising me like that. I certainly liked that he did it. My sense of him is he's a very deep and introspective person. He puts a great deal of thought into things.
Good guy, I hope I get to talk with him again someday.

Thanks for sharing that. That was very kind of you. I saw CD format but no vinyl...yet. Maybe that's why the date was pushed backed to 12/4?
Once again...with the sadness of today, thank you for that.

Honestly, I have no idea either way. I just know what he said of his plan at the time. He also said it would be 7 songs specifically, but it looks like he added the radio mix of "most of all". That does track with what he said about 7 acoustic versions. Looks like he added the non-acoustic most of all after consideration. More is always better of course. We talked a bit about the difference of sound experience between CD/download and Vinyl, which is his preference. I told him I didn't have a turntable but I'd buy one now. After that conversation, how could I not?
I will say, based on what he said, Traces is VERY important to him. VERY personal. I don't think commercialism drove him on any level in crafting these songs.

Yep. When we spoke he said this was the last output for Traces and after this he was moving on. He repeated that here in this interview:

Bellaire, I made a sincere attempt to post and PM the selfie I mentioned but I keep getting error messages from the board. Even reached out to Andrew but he didn't respond. If you want you can PM me your email address and I can send it to you there.

Trying to post it but the board is saying "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."? There is no other attachment on this board that I see.
I tried to send to you via PM but I got two error messages: "the extension jpg is not allowed" and "the extension png is not allowed".
Maybe Andrew can help?
