Postby OnlyForSteve » Wed Sep 07, 2022 9:27 am

Did you know that there's a campaign to get Steve Perry's song "RUNNING ALONE" back on regular radio rotation, back in the public's attention and GET IT TO GO VIRAL? Steve Perry fans are being asked to call into their local radio stations and request the song. Fans are also being asked to view the song on Steve Perry's Official YouTube site as often as possible to see if we can get the song to reach a million views. Use the hashtag, #StevePerryRunningAloneChallenge on all your social media sites. AND share, share, share this information with everyone!!!

Hi Indigo, First, I'd like to thank you for responding to my post. I really appreciate that, especially because I feel strongly about this song. You ask why that song; there are a lot of reasons. "Running Alone" is a beautiful and extremely well written song. It is a song that is seeped in deep meaning and one that has the ability to inspire hope in anyone experiencing hard times. The lyrics are extremely inspirational and have helped many who have listened to it to champion through situations that at times seems impossible to bear. It reminds the listener that even though there will be hard times and that they will face many hardships and adversities, that they can find the strength within themselves to get through it.

I have a question for you, Indigo. Why not this song? Have you ever really listened to the words as Steve sings them? In more than one interview, Steve has said that he's reached back to this song at moments when he's going through a hard time. I actually first heard "Running Alone" when Steve himself selected it as a song that he loved that meant a lot to him while he was a guest DJ. This song has great emotional and spiritual value and deserves to be played and played often. It could help many out there, especially during these difficult times. Please listen to "Running Alone" again, really listen to it, letting the essence of the words soak in and then listen to the additional meaning that Steve's presentation gives it. I hope you will help spread the word about this magnificent song.

Killer song. But it's not going to be revived in 2022 for any reason.

Believe me, I have listened to it plenty of times. I bought it when it first came out on a cassette tape. Love Street Talk, but that song is the one I usually skip over. Yes, I have listened to the words, and I even know about the little kid's voice in the background saying 'can Steve come out and play?'
It may mean a lot to Steve, just like his songs on Traces, which I am not crazy about either.
It just sounds dated to me, but glad you find a connection to the song. That's good.

Thank for getting back to me, Indigo. I appreciate that! Of course, I disagree with what you said. "Running Alone" is much, much deeper than the "Can Steve come out to play" part, AND good music is never dated and lasts forever. It doesn't need to change and go with the newest whatever is out there at the moment. Also, the things the song references are part of human life and will exist as long as man exists on Earth. I'm really sorry you didn't make a connection with "Running Alone", I really am!!! But, I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts! I'm happy you appreciate the "Street Talk" album, though. It is a FANTASTIC work of art!!!

Andrew, I would like to hear why you feel that, "it's not going to be revived in 2022 for any reason." Please explain.

Thank you, both. I appreciate the opportunity to have discourse about this.

First, I only brought up the 'can Steve come out to play' part because you believed that I didn't know the song or lyrics.
I am no newbie to Steve's solo music and his tenure in Journey. I consider myself a true fan, but will also admit when I do or do not like a song, or even album. Different strokes for different folks. Music affects people in different ways. We all know that.
Again, to me, I disliked that particular song the first time I heard it. Tried to like it, but I just don't. I didn't say that he has to update it. I want the man to move on musically.
I am anxiously awaiting his new Christmas album. I sure you are, too.

There are simply a number of better more likely songs that might benefit from some pop culture reference, which would revive the fortunes of an old song. It just doesn't fit the 'mood' of any other song that has benefitted from said exposure.

I agree...I think it's the wrong song. I like the song but I have never felt it would be a radio hit, even back in 1984. I would rather see something like "Don't Tell Me Why You're Leavin", or one of the songs from the CD+5's from FTLOSM, or even "If Only For the Moment Girl". IMO, songs that are more radio friendly but still somewhat obscure to the general public.

It's too obscure of a song to get onto radio. But a number of his 'deep cut' songs could do very well on various satellite/streamed stations. A number of stations are perfect for this. 80's, Deep Cuts, Classic Rewind, The Bridge. Or maybe one day if Journey/Steve get a dedicated channel of their own.

First, I'd like to thank you, Indigo, Andrew, Monker. and Art for taking the time to respond to my comments.
I agree, Indigo, that not everyone has the same taste in music and therefore will not like the same songs; but I do think that there are many who would love and appreciate "Running Alone" (and its inspirational value) if only they had the chance to hear it. And yes, I'm looking forward to new music from Steve, but I still hold fast to and continue to appreciate the old.

Andrew, Monker, and Art, I understand your remarks about radio's response to the song; and Andrew, I even understand what you're saying about the difference in the mood of the song from many others. I feel, though, that it's a sad shame and a drastic oversight on the part of radio which has often overlooked exceptional, superior songs in favor of mediocre ones. Monker, I agree with you that "Don't Tell Me Why You're Leavin" and "If Only For the Moment Girl" are wonderful songs, both also worthy of attention. I think the "Street Talk" album is a work of art in its entirety. But my desire to get "Running Alone" noticed is specific to this song. I am willing to utilize other modes of action to assist with the process, though, as per your statements, Andrew, Monker, and Art. Thank you, Art, for your station suggestions. I will definitely check them out. BTW, there is an existing petition that's attempting to get SiriusXM to create a dedicated StevePerry/Journey channel.

Again, I thank you all for your input and sharing your thoughts and ideas with me. It's greatly appreciated!

Honestly, anything you hear on 'terrestrial' or Top 40 radio these days has nothing to do with the artist and everything to do with the producers and record labels. They tailor and push what they want to have heard. Adele is the perfect example. She is talented, has an amazing voice and I do like some of her songs. But she is not original by any means. There have been people doing what she does before her, and better. They're just independent artists and don't have the connections. Listen to Alice Russel, another blond hair, blue eyed Brit with a killer voice. Tell me she doesn't sound like a grittier Adele. She was around before Adele. They've also taken other recent pop hits with unique sounds and created songs in the same vain for Adele. Listen to Royal by Lorde. It was catchy and different when it came out. And it did well. Then Adele comes out with Send My Love, which sounds almost the same. That wasn't coincidence. They tailored that formula to her.

90% of the things I listen to these days, the average radio listener wouldn't know and wouldn't care to listen to because they're not 'mainstream'. Doesn't mean they're not good. Names like Grace Potter, Leon Bridges, Black Pumas, Emily Wolfe, Ocean Alley, Tash Sultana, King Princess...just to name a few. This is what's in my wheelhouse these days. They have huge followings and they are talented as shit. They're just not mainstream, so you don't hear them on the radio. It's a damn shame that true talent doesn't get recognized.

The flip side is that it's easy to navigate and get lost on the stream services. Once you start digging, you find these gems that you never knew existed.

That's radio summed up in one sentence for you. Corrupt and unjust.
