Oops, wait a minute. MTV retracts story

Postby Angiekay » Sat Oct 22, 2005 12:31 am

A day after suggesting that Van Halen would be the next band to do the TV show Rock Star, MTV has now withdrawn the report. The network's original report came from someone close to the TV show, who said that guitarist Edward Van Halen; his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen; and bassist Michael Anthony would use the show to find a new singer, if there is a second edition of Rock Star. Now, MTV quotes a Van Halen spokesperson, who said the band "flatly denies any involvement in the show."

I knew it!
I think RockStar is trying to drum up attention and hype for another season. They have probably been aware of the internet discussions suggesting VH, hell-it's the obvious choice. And it would be HUGE. By saying this stuff, maybe they are trying to influence VH by showing them the "support" for the idea.

I still say it leaked out before final details were worked out. It may still fall through, but I'll bet it's 90% a done deal.

I'm leaning to the contrary , Neal Is God..I think either the ROckStar producers lied about the whole thing just to attract publicity to the show..or it was leaked to test reaction..Judging from reaction I have seen here and at the David Lee roth web page, I think the reaction has been OVERWHELMINGLY NEGATIVE!!!!!!! I think that is why they are saying they won't do it now.. I am surprised by how negatvie fan reaciton was.. I would have liked to have seen it myself. Even if only to get to see VH on TV once a week or however often it runs. It would have been cool to hear people singing VH songs and you know they would have thrown out some more obscure ones for the auditions. So, that would have been cool.. I almost named one of my obscure favorites, but if I did that just as an example there would be all these follow up posts saying..that song SUCKS , i think they should do this one and it would miss the whole point of my post.. Anyway, it would put VH in teh spotlight again and maybe their first tour with the new singer would boost ticket sales..call me desperate, but i hate that rock is dead now..If it took Vh doing ROck Star to get people a little excited and to have anohter BIG Van Halen tour again , that would be great.. It would be so cool to say to people at work ."I'm going to the Van Halen show tonight " and have them say..OH with that new singer?...that is cool..As opposed to 'I'm going to see Van Halen tonight." and then hearing "who?" "are those old farts still together?" "i thought they split up." "IS Sammy Davis Jr still the singer?" "don't they do that song "Cherry Pie?""which theatre/nightclub are they playing at?..." Oh brother get me out of this rap/alternative hell and bring back bands that realy fucking matter, please

I think you have a good point here. I just wonder how people would REALLY react to this. I mean, my god, look at the anger towards Sammy replacing Dave. There has always been this "Dave fans" and "Sammy fans" divided camp on VH. I liked Dave too, but Sammy was an established great solo singer/songwriter to begin with and I think brought an amazing amount of talent to VH and people still balked. How on earth would people react to some joe off the street trying to not only front a new VH but try and recreate the magic both Dave and Sammy brought to that band in the last 25+ years?! We won't even get started with Gary Cherone! lol! I just don't think it could have been or can be done. Inxs was one thing(no pun intended-lol) because nobody really could name a band member outside of Michael until Rock star, but trying to find someone to jive with Alex and Eddie?! Wow...that's an undertaking.

Sammy, Dave or bust for VH. Hopefully Dave IMO.

It will be interesting to see what happens here. Personally, I would watch it, but I would rather VH not do it. I like to think they are above reality shows... and I don't think it's a good way to find a new singer. I am sure Eddie has a short list of people he would consider bringing into the fold.

ANgie Kay..I really like this statement you made..
"I think you have a good point here. I just wonder how people would REALLY react to this."

The reason I think it is such an interesting statement is because it is so succinct and yet so profound. Allow me to elucidate.. Sadly, we live in a world with a huge entertainment industry. Entertainment has become such big business, and there is so much money at stake that in order to safeguard against huge financial losses , people in the TV, MOvie, music business etc, focus group things to death and leak stories to get reaction before hand. Sadly, a lot of potentially good ideas DIE just because people's intital reaciton to what they THINK it might be like was bad. But, Angie Kay , you are so correct in your other point. Look how badly people reacted to Sammy joining VH..I remember it vividly . I was very skeptical myself but willing to give it a chance. But my image of Sammy Hagar at the time did not allow me to really see how they would mesh and then they came out with the 5150 album and kicked EVERYBODY's ass. It was their first number one album and they continued to prosper even after Roth fell off the radar (no disrespect, people. I love Dave, but he faded after the Skyscrpaer album) Actually, it wasnt until the 1996 hagar/roth/cherone debacle that I ever really saw the press treating Van Halen in a negative way and they have never really recovered since public relations wise.. Anyway, Angie, I had to commend you for that simple point you made because for all we know George MIchael and Tony Iommi could have great chemistry and be capable of doing a tremendous album together but if it was thrown out there that these two were getting together to form a band. PEOPLE would GAG!!!..George Michael fans would vomit and Iommi fans would want to slit thier wrists. I , by the way, am not a big GM fan so please dont bash me people. This was just an EXAMPLE..Anyway , ANgie Kay, who is to say how people would react once they actually saw ROCK STAR with VAN HALEN and actually witnessed talneted people up there doing stellar performances of Van Halen songs WITH THE BAND. It could be really exciting and even get younger people into Van Halen!!!
