If he is OTH, I wouldn't say it to his face.

He might fuck my girlfriend...

I'd have to say yes. After seeing him on the Sam and Dave tour....He was alright and it was enjoyable...but his voice is gone (if it was ever really there live anyway). I have a 1983 boot from Rio and he sounded like shit then.
Don't get me wrong....I love the albums he was on (especially II) but live is a no go for me.

We don't have many "hills" here in the southern plains of the U.S., but judging by DLR's most recent performances on television, I'd have to say his voice is fine for the music he's been promoting... not so sure if it'd be fine for VH.

Sure would like to see him front the once mighty band again for the first time (live performance, that is, for me). 8)

I have a pretty substandard '83 Rio boot and I have to agree that Dave didn't sound that great. In fact, in many of the DLRVH live boots that I have heard, Dave either doesn't sound that great or he kind of mumbles lyrics, makes up new lyrics or all of the above. So, with Dave at least, it seems that his vocal performance wasn't as important as his just being Dave.

VH101 and I saw the Sam and Dave show here in Dallas and, at least IMO, Dave pulled it off quite nicely. Sure he couldn't hit the notes and his screams were pretty weak but it was Dave and it worked. Plus his band was great.

With the extra years since that show, it's entirely likely that his day is done. However, I wouldn't doubt that he still has a few good shows in him, somewhere.

For the record, I was a fan of both eras of VH. Having said that, I never thought Roth was much of a vocalist. Roth was as good of a "performer" as I've ever seen. The guy lived for the spotlight and wanted nothing else in life than to be the center of attention. That said, I thought "5150" was Van Halen's greatest work and Sammy was the reason why! Sammy kicks ass and can actually sing! Dave was more about jumping around and showing off than he ever was about singing!

I saw him the day after (or before,I don't remember the tour schedule) in Houston. As I said...I enjoyed myself...but is voice sounded VERY road worn. Maybe that's the case for the boots I've heard AND that tour....but I doubt it. I just think he's a great "showman" and that's about it. But again...Love the classic albums ALMOST as much as the Sammy years. :-)

I think you're absolutely right about his voice. Road-worn is probably as good as it gets but seeing as how he is more showman than singer, he can get away with it more than someone more known for their singing ability. That doesn't mean that he's not over the hill; it's just that if you could never sing that great live to begin with, why not keep going?

As for the albums, I tend to listen to the DLR albums more than the Sammy albums, although 5150 was the first VH album I ever bought. It's all good, though.

I just saw Roth live a couple weeks ago and both he and his band were top notch.

Roth's vocals were very good and being that he was performing on a small stage with not much room to jump around on, he seemed to concentrate more on his singing than he used to in years past (where he'd skip several verses in order to get the kicks and jumps in).

It was a great show and I would definitely go again.

My question is - Do we really need 3 or 4 more VH records with Sam? This isnt gonna be the Rolling Stones here people. Have Sam and Dave do a world tour with VH. Sam set and a Dave set.

Now if they made Michael take a pay cut do you think Eddied would share the cash with 2 singers? It would be a HUGE tour but I think Ed is permanently stoned and can't see the trees through the forest. He is either very egotistical & greedy or his brain is fried. Why kill such a great band!

Dave was always better in the studio than he was live with regards to vocals. Van Halen could do 3 or 4 more albums in the studio with Dave, but they wouldn't be classics like the older stuff.

Sammy can sing live and in the studio, but even he's lost a bit of range since 5150.

I say NOPE. I have witnessed DLR 5 times since he started touring again in 1999. Caught him in 2002 with Sam and 2003 new years eve show. Great shows throughout. Never have caught him on a bad night as some have said. I know he will hold his own with Eddie when they tour in 2007. Wont and cant miss that. I always tell my friends to check him out when hes in town. I tell you guys the same.

Just curious, is there anything recent from DLR floating around? Aside from that bluegrass stuff that he sang?

I'd like to hear what he sounds like within the past couple of years...that clip posted here from '99, not too good, IMO.

Trust me, you never caught his Vegas act.It was sad to watch.

Other than like live stuff, there really isn't much from DLR.
