First thing I thought when I saw that was industrial hearing loss; pretty common amongst rock musicians. They look very similar to the type people wear here for demolition sites and mining where there's lots of noise but you still need to hear directions being given.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

i think its more of a fashion statement though;.
