With all due respect, your voice sounds really strained, over used, raspy, in the new vids. If you don't hear it, it's simply because the change has happened slowly and not overnight. And if you still don't hear it after listening to these 2 videos, then you probably just don't want to hear it. ;)

You have an amazing talent, I hate it to see your voice getting strained like this. You should take better care of those pipes.

I hear it also--plain as day. I'm hesitant to pass judgment on one show since there are SO many things that can affect a voice, but Jeremey DOES sound strained (or maybe more accurately, hoarse) on these clips, which is surprising for someone who is pretty rock-solid live.

I'll concede that those two clips do sound very different! However, keep in mind that when I was "outed" as the next potential Journey singer, I removed just about every Frontiers video except the absolute best, so what you have online prior to 2008 is pretty much the "best of the best."

However, since then as I said, I have been performing 3-4 days a week, on the road 4-5 days a week, doing 2+ hour shows in the original key, and humping all our own equipment, backline, etc. And the 2-3 days I'm home I have a 2 year old and 3 month old waiting for me.

So yep, you bet I am pretty tired!

Anyway, I have adjusted my singing in order to survive that kind of schedule, and it's coming more from the chest and diaphragm. I'm actually hitting higher notes more consistently, but what you're hearing here is a darker tone, and a shortness of breath because I've put on about 20 pounds in the past 2 years as well. Breath support is about the single most important factor in marathon-style touring singers.

I'm not too worried about burning my voice out right now, though in about 4 weeks I have another check up with the Duke ENTs.

The biggest thing I can do to improve right now is get into better shape and exercise, and get serious again about my allergy regimens.

Well, I don't think many care about my vocal health regardless, but I appreciate the insight here in this thread!

A more accurate comparison of my "touring" voice would be this clip from a little over a year ago (when I was into the touring schedule for about 3 months)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1j62V5PrE8

And this clip from last weekend:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc8aSRjc ... re=channel

I think you'll hear more accurate differences that reflect the weight change and breath support.

Thanks again!

There's a sweetness present here, that's missing from the recent clips.
Die-hards can still appreciate the affected Perry-isms and Cooke-isms, but once that high-end burns out, you lose the instantly recognizable Journey sound.
Still sounds good to me, just less like the Perry of DSB and AWYWI - which I think most cover band crowds expect and want.

I've thought about all this whenever I've watched you - you guys play for what, close to 3 hours every time? And I know how often you play and how far you travel. Must be grueling to say the least. Make sure you keep taking care of yourself as best you can between touring and takin care of the little ones. I'm not a singer but I'm sure being in good physical shape is so crucial to keep yourself spry. Remember, a little working out is much better than none at all - even if you can only squeeze a 10 or 15 minute jog in, it'll help a ton and you'll shed the extra pounds before you know it.

Take care of those pipes whatever you do!

I agree. But I will add on Stay Awhile your changes in phrasing and emphasis on syllables or certain words in some places take away from the simplicity and heartfelt beauty of Stay Awhile. It's not working for me. Like the delivery on the older one much better.

"in the original key" I promise you, no one coming to one of your shows will care if you sing the songs in a lower key. You should already be doing that....if needed.

Also, I checked out several of your more recent videos. You're starting to add your own vocal phrasing, runs, etc, on these tunes, "making them your own" instead of replicating the originals. If you were a cover band, it wouldn't matter. But for someone doing a national touring "tribute" to Journey/Steve Perry, you should consider listening to the source material more often. It's easy to lose the little nuances of the source material when performing more often, but you really nailed the Perry vibe in your earlier videos and it's slowly moving more towards something else as of late I'm afraid.

I'm not crazy about most of them, the ballads, truthfully. I agree with Texafana 100 percent. I love the way he delivered them b/f. Maybe the faster songs he can play with that way and change up. But I don't think his voice is necessarily showing wear and tear like others mentioned b/f. I don't know, but to me,it just sounds more like congestion, maybe seasonal allergies or a cold.
