Anyway, I got a Vizio player on sale at Walmart for $168. It wasn't the cheapest but not the priciest. My stomach hurts, I hope I made a good buy.

Please do yourself a very good and quick favor. Take that piece of junk Vizio to Walmart ASAP!!! Im going to be honest with you, you bought the crappiest piece of junk there is out there.... your current DVD player is probably better than the Vizio.... as Matt said, you couldve bought a GREAT quality SONY Playstation 3 for merely a $100 more,,, a unit that is SOLID , never has any problems and is capabale of updating its firmware,,,, something vizio can and will not do.,.... what this means is that in a year or so when there are some new movies demanding some new functions from your Bluray player, your PS3 would be able to handle it with a simple and free update, where your vizio can not.....

Failure. I firmly believe that there's being on a budget and there's wasting money trying to save money... don't do the latter Suzanne, take it back!

I can name a brand that's more junkier cheap then Vizio...MAGNAVOX! That be the brand of my Blu-Ray Player, which was also a Wal-Mart Clearence special at $120.

And so far, it's played all the movies I've bought for it, so I can't complain. Even with the cheapest of the cheap player, the cheapest of the cheap HDMI cable, and the cheapest of the cheap Polaroid HDTV...the quality of the picture, as well as the sound quality via my stereo speakers, is leaps and bounds superior to DVD.

My only gripe is that some of the movies that I want to watch still haven't had a Blu-Ray release. No Timecop. No Waterworld. No Dragonheart. Very few TV series. And the extended Lord of the Rings won't be out until 2011/2012.

Now that the PS3 has dropped in price, I'm definitely considering one if I end up encountering the firmware update problem...but since I can't afford to buy tons of blu-rays, that won't be for awhile.

Yes, Blu-Ray discs are very expensive. However, I've been lucky with used copies. In particular, I don't think people around here pay much attention to the format they purchase. I've noticed several BR discs returned to the local store that have the used price but were returned still sealed. This is how I got unopened copies of Nightwish "End of an Era" and both Final Fantasy movies for $10 a piece.

I bought the Blu-Ray player, have one HDMI cable. I need two apparently to hook from the player to the sound system, then one from the sounds system to the TV, right? Well, what about the HD satellite box? It doens't need to hook into everything with an HDMI cable?

:(

does your blurayplayer have optical sound out?
and if so, does your stereo system has an optical sound in ???

You wont need to hook the sound from the stereo system to your TV,,,, just from Bluray player to your sound system.....

so what brand did you get and How much !? :)

I understand your dilemma, but here's the simplest diagram connecting your Blu-Ray to HD TV and your Satellite receiver to HD TV. Don't worry about the sound, your HDMI cable with take care of both sound and your video. I assumed your HD TV has only one HDMI output connection at the back. In order to connect 2 HD player/receiver, you'll be needing an HDMI switcher, see below. You can buy this on Amazon.com or to your local Best Buy (but a little pricey). For the meantime, if you don't have the switcher, just manually pull out and connect HDMI cable from one player to another in order to watch one at a time, but that will be a big hazzle.

Now if you have a stereo receiver, your sound will be better, coming out from your stereo speaker and not from your TV speaker. And this will require another connection from your Blu-Ray to stereo receiver using S cable or composite cable. 8)

Something tells me there's a good reason for that

Though Timecop is a guilty pleasure for me...

The lack of TV series on BRD is a dealbreaker for my dad, who's a huge TV buff. He's got just about every show ever fuckin made on DVD, anything from old old shows to brand new stuff. I watch mostly shows nowadays too

And that show gets funnier with a perfect picture? :? :P  I really only care about bluray for movies and shows that will be improved by the quality. Like action movies for instance. My comedies and sitcoms don't matter so much. As that becomes the only thing available, then of course that will change for me

Wow!! Not even in Tagalog  Picture quality means crap in sitcoms. It only matters in action movies. If I have the choice to rent or own it on bluray, I pick bluray since I have a player now. But I'm not running out and replacing all the old dvd's I have. It's not worth it for that perfect picture with MOST movies and shows. The having less disc's thing makes a little sense though ;)

Actually- I heard from reviews that it updates fine but that's only what I read and the book said something about updates too. Just my 2 cents.
