SyFy just aired V, V: The Final Battle and V: The Series in its entirety from Sunday through today. I watched all of the two miniseries, and a bits of the episodes of the regular weekly series, and I made sure to catch the last two episodes. The budget for the weekly was on par for a "C" grade movie, and storywise it had plotholes you could send a comet through.

There was a hilarious moment in the penultimate episode where Marc Singer and Faye Grant are posing as lizards with masks of themselves. When Diana arrests them, they go "Who? Us? We just got assigned!" and they pull off their "masks" to reveal their reptilian forms. Diana (*drool*) storms off, and then Marc & Faye "pull off" their lizard masks! Wow! How did they produce latex masks that thin and compatible with each other in the eyes/lips/nose (or lack of) areas?

(Better yet, there's another part where they take their human "masks" and put them on two reptilians they've knocked out to make Diana think they're...you get the picture. Ass-slappin' funny!)

Anyway, I like the two original miniseries. After that, things get too "Land Of The Lost" for me.

The pilot of the new V was pretty solid and reproduces significant elements (duh) from the original. Of course, you have CGI instead of matte paintings, and the ships look much better. However, the old series still has a certain charm and I don't see that in this reimagining. There are unnecessarily melodramatic bits (read: slo-mo) that I don't think adds anything to the final product. It's definitely got that Heroes feel (lots and lots of grey), and I'd opt for a grittier, in-your-face, Shield-type feel. The scene that introduces us to the Resistance was pretty decent.

The V pilot was good, but I'm not sure it will keep me around every week. Flash Forward is much more interesting, I wouldn't miss one. But right now I'm very much into Entourage - I'm going through the seasons like going through butter. lol...Ari Gold is better than any Visitor or FBI agent.

If anyone liked that show they need to have their brains sucked out with a vacuum cleaner and replaced with Styrofoam because it would drastically improve IQ... seriously it was just so god-awful I thought Ed Wood had come back from the dead to direct it.

Let's see, Aliens show up on earth - cause an earthquake, refuse to answer critical questions and begin organizing our teenagers into a HITLER YOUTH type situation after only three weeks and nobody squawks about it? It's so dumb that I was howling and laughing hysterically.

But then again we live in a world where CSI Miami a ratings juggernaut. When you can have a hit show where a beaten down actor well past his prime can draw a huge audience by taking off his sunglasses and muttering one liners, and his costar has been injected by so much botox that you can't even see her mouth move when she talks - anything is possible.

I happen to be a huge Sci-Fi fan, own every episode of B5, Lost, BSG, ST:TOS, ST:E, ST:TNG, T:TSCC, Dollhouse, Firefly, Fringe, et.

Watching some actors from those great series stuck in this pile of steaming crap that the Network execs have their grubby little fat fingers all over makes me sick. I am sure that it will drive more than a few of them into alcoholism and drugs. Nothing kills an artist faster than having to shovel shit to the masses.

This thing is so bad it makes Stargate Atlantis look like The Godfather.

Relax.

'Sides, nothing is as lame as Stargate: Atlantis or especially Stargate: Universe, that new series which is trying to get its training wheels by swiping (or attempting to swipe) some of BSG's mojo.

Enterprise? Too many lackluster episodes made me take a breather from that show. I didn't return to it. I'll stick to reruns of the classic show and TNG.

Dollhouse and Firefly, huh? Joss Whedon sucks. Sorry. It had to be said. Firefly is just Whedon's take on Han Solo. I tried to watch Serenity, which people swore up and down was worth my time. I fell asleep during it. The last time I fell asleep during a sci fi I was supposed to be "interested" in, it was Star Trek: Generations.

My problems with V right off the bat:

A- Because there is water in abundance everywhere in the stinking galaxy where it doesn't require the work of "planning" to take over a society for 50 years. Matter of fact there isn't ANYTHING on earth that isn't completely abundant in the rest of the galaxy. The only reason they could possibly need us is for plant and animal life, which means they would need to eat us. If they need to eat us I would refer to "C".

B- The Lizard people in suits concept is comical, if they wanted to do this they should have made it a comedy like" Tim Burton's "Mars Attacks"

C- You have city sized spaceships with technology way way beyond ours. If you want to take over the planet you could just come down and blow it the hell up like they did in ID4. It would be alot less work.

D- We can't even get our teens to listen long enough to an adult to convince them to stop inhaling spraypaint out of cans and you are telling me that lizards in people suits are going to turn them into an obedient Hitler Youth army in 3 weeks?

E- NOBODY on this planet is willing to accept or believe anything outside their cultural, religious, or political viewpoint even when not listening means we are all going to doom ourselves. Human beings are sexist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic,et et et. If aliens landed here tomorrow and parked huge massive ships over key cities and started dictating policy, you'd have conspiracy theories and such widespread panic and fear that there is NO WAY anyone would listen to what they had to say. Seriously we would not be allowing them to park motherships over the tops of major cities - ridiculous.

F- This was even a cheesy concept in the 80's.

I am not going to defend every Sci-Fi series I own, some I like less than others... some I love, some only barely passed the "buy it" test and sometimes it was just out of nostalgia.

But I do love Firefly and Dollhouse, they both rock. Whedon haters can SUCK IT.

Whedon's crap is SF for the same dopes who like shit like Twilight.

That aside, I do understand where you're coming from with V. And we already know that they're after the planet for its food (humans included) & water supply and whatever else. (And the part where they just start clapping in the street was uber-lame!)

If you had just made your F point your A point —
F- This was even a cheesy concept in the 80's.
— you could have skipped the rest.

V watchers who are familiar with the old series know they/we aren't watching the show for an ultrarealistic take on SF — but it will be a darker, more serious take on the concept. There are a lot of variables in play (the InterWeb, open/closed borders, cell tech, etc.) that the writers are able to utilize that were still unavailable when the old show was conceptualized.

Keep in mind that the Visitors do not want to lay waste to the planet. The friendly/stealth approach is much more beneficial. Think about it.

And remember, this story was done first (and best) in The Twilight Zone episode, "To Serve Man" — in the space of one half-hour!

'Sides, if you want "realistic" SF, what ARE you doing with watching Firefly/Serenity? Even the Far Out Space Nuts was better than those!

No... if I want to watch realistic Sci-Fi I will watch BSG, because it did actually happen. Just a few weeks ago I was on a shoot way out in the desert and I found a piece of a raptor out near some rocks. I swear it.

Now if I want pure escapism and I want to watch space cowboys, then I watch Firefly/Serenity - which fulfills both my love of westerns and of sci-fi.

Ice Pirates.

Matter of fact there isn't ANYTHING on earth that isn't completely abundant in the rest of the galaxy.

Swine Flu.

Daleks (salt & pepper anyone?)

C- You have city sized spaceships with technology way way beyond ours. If you want to take over the planet you could just come down and blow it the hell up like they did in ID4. It would be alot less work.

War of the Worlds

(and, they didn't "blow up the planet" in ID4...BTW, 'computer virus' - War of the Worlds)

D- We can't even get our teens to listen long enough to an adult to convince them to stop inhaling spraypaint out of cans and you are telling me that lizards in people suits are going to turn them into an obedient Hitler Youth army in 3 weeks?

"Them".

Galactica 1980 and Space 1999.

If you want a 'realistic' and dramatic, I still say "Torchwood - Children of Earth" is the best scifi story ever for a TV/mini-series.
