Google Yourself

Postby SherriBerry » Sat Nov 21, 2009 7:32 pm

I just joined up over at WTF when I realized I'm missing half of what is going on and feel left out :( , and decided to Google myself and see what comes up just from my name. Well holy shit, Batman! There is some website called pipl.com and it went into my Amazon profile! One of the privacy settings somehow got set to 'share with everyone' and luckily I didn't put anything in there. But it had the town I live in and two books from my wishlist. Another site listed me as one of the winners for a gift card from a BC charity lottery which I had not considered. Creepy! I think it's a good idea to Google yourself once in a while and see what's out there.

Holy shit. Rephrase that. I love googling my real name.

I googled ProgRocker53 and now I'm a tad bit frightened.

The only thing I found was my name associated with my ex-wife's name and her address, as if I lived there.

Other than that, you can't find me. :D I like that.

That's only going to work if people know your full legal name. I'm sure your name's not really Sherry Berry, & if it is you need to change it for identity theft purposes. Take me for example. If you look up Jason DeConcini you're not going to find me. That's b/c Jason is my middle name & my last name is hyphenated, but I only use one half of the hyphenation when online. Hypothetically speaking, you would have to know my full legal name is Jonathan Jason Friga-DeConcini in order for that mean anything.

I don't have any stalkers, but if someone wanted to know more about me, they could have Googled my name and found out things I did not expect to be there, like part of my wishlist on Amazon or what charities I had purchased tickets from. Nothing important, but at least it made me aware of the privacy settings. I've Googled my name before and the only thing that came up were two obituaries listing me as a surviving relative, so this was a surprise. And my name is definitely not Sherri Berry - my parents wouldn't do that to me!

You're welcome! I Googled my dad once to see what would come up and found out he had not set the privacy settings properly on his Facebook account, so it was accessible to almost everyone online for awhile. He uses his even less than I use mine with almost no info, but it's amazing what people can find out about you. And some people put every freakin' detail of their lives on there! It's just one more thing to look out for now. If I were famous, I would hire someone to do checks for me - I don't know how any celebrity could stand all of the garbage written about them and their personal lives.

After googling myself, I found out I was owed over $4000 by an employer for some salary mix-up years ago when I was in training. They said they couldn't find me - not likely since I always put in a forwarding address. So there are good things that can come from having info out there.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

I find that googling yourself only has an effect if you're name is somewhat unique. If you go through life with a name like John Smith (not my name, but you get the point), good luck trying to "google yourself"!

Don't you have to, more or less, put yourself out there as well?!?!?
I was only able to locate the same information that you'd find in the local phone book and
employment information w/my name.
However, as MG I have discovered that one of us is missing!!

You can look up cell phone numbers now?!?

Yeah, there are a few things I have seen logged that I wouldn't like out there (like some OLD version of my Myspace, before I made it private) but I kind of have to put my name on my design portfolio and art so... it's out there. My LinkedIn profile and art portfolio are on the first page of my results.

Mostly though, Googling my name gives a bunch of ancestry sites, and apparently a character in a novel called Utopia has the same name.
