750 Extras Needed For ‘Prisoners’

BY Eugene Driscoll | DEC 17, 2009 11:35 PM

POSTED TO: Derby, Shelton

DERBY — The movie will be set in Derby, using the Derby seal, Derby road signs and Derby police insignia.

And they’ll need 750 extras.

Those were some of the details revealed Thursday night about “Prisoners,” the thriller from director Antoine Fuqua.

The Derby Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to allow the movie producers and Warner Bros., the movie’s distributor, to use Derby’s name in the movie — and any of its sequels.

Furthermore, Mayor Anthony Staffieri asked and received assurances from the producers that Derby and its residents won’t be depicted in a negative light in the film, which is described as a thriller in the vein of “Mystic River,” the highly-acclaimed 2003 flick directed by Clint Eastwood.

Shooting starts in February in Derby and Shelton, according to Sheila O’Malley, the city’s economic development director.

John Starke, the movie’s executive director, sent a letter to Staffieri outlining the film’s plot — and promising not to make Derby or Shelton look bad.

“I’m writing this letter not only to thank you for your and Mayor Lauretti’s help so far, but also to assure you that in no way is your town, local police or residents of the town depicted in any negative way in the script,” Starke wrote.

“I’m a lot more confident now that they have put it down in black and white,” Staffieri said.

The production company will be in contact with city officials about the logistic of the shoot, which will close some Derby streets.

If Derby workers are needed, such as police officers for traffic control, the production will reimburse the city, Staffieri said.

Fuqua, the film’s director, is best known for guiding Denzel Washington to best actor Academy Award in “Training Day.”

“Prisoners” is about two families who live across the street from each other, according to Starks’ letter.

“These lifelong friends are thrust into turmoil when their two youngest daughters go missing. The movie centers on the family’s desperation in finding their children with the help of their neighbors and local police force; especially one police detective,” Stark wrote.

The producer’s letter mentions the need for up to 750 extras. Those extras will come from the Naugatuck Valley, Starke wrote.

O’Malley said the casting calls for extras will likely take place in January.

Actors who’ve been considered for leading roles include Russell Crowe, Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, who previously worked with Fuqua on 2007’s “Shooter,” an action flick.

Local officials said they’ve been told Hugh Jackman is attached to the movie. The “Prisoners” script is considered a hot commodity — and was named one of the best unproduced scripts of 2009.

Chrystie Street Casting posted a casting call for the movie Dec. 4.

Three people are wanted to play reporters in bit parts.

Lucky you! Looks like 2010 is better for you already...

I LOVED doing extra work on 'big casting call' movies when I first moved to Los Angeles...Starsky & Hutch, Red Dragon, A Mighty Wind, American Pie 2, Path to War, just to name a few of the movie sets I've been on. Good times, good memories and then that phase just faded away when I got a real job

First Deal or No Deal moves to CT from Culver City on which I spent many 10 hour days working as an audience member and now you guys get Feature Films too :x Well anyway - bring a book, camping chair, 2 wardrobe changes, visit the Craft Service Table frequently and help make a movie.

Getting to be on a movie set would be an amazing experience, particularly a set with such a talented director (Tears of the Sun is my favourite film from Antoine Fuqua) and Hugh Jackman. I think I would be scared if it were Christian Bale - what if I walked into his line of sight by mistake? :? They filmed a movie once in my little hometown (a former local is writing in LA) and an actor everyone would recognize starred, but he must have been desperate for money because the movie was so bad in every way possible. At least it was set in Alaska and not here. (BTW, I'm not talking about 'Mystery, Alaska' which was filmed relatively near here and starred Russell Crowe - that was a good movie!)

I hope you get a chance to be in the movie!

Cool! That's exciting!! Go sign up to be a prisoner, Nora! The only time I got excited about a movie shot here was between 1-2 years ago when Johnny Depp was hanging around. They said on the news the general area he was going to be, which would not have been ahard at ALL to find, but because of that I knew there'd be 5,000 peopple hanging around. (and there were, I found out the next day).

But shooting movies and TV is so common here I barely ever noticed. I used to work downtown, where most of the filiming is done... every week there were "no parking - movie location" signs up. You know you're desensitized to it the day you come out of Starbucks, see George Clooney standing on the street corner in the middle of February (in his scrubs) and think nothing of it. (that really happened!)
