Warrior Dash

Postby SherriBerry » Tue Mar 02, 2010 8:11 pm

I read about the Warrior Dash on Facebook and then Blueskies mentioned in another thread that she was competing. All I know is that it is a 3-5km foot race over muddy, tough terrain. How do you train for that? I'm guessing jogging on my treadmill won't do it. It's on different days in different regions of the US starting in April. I'm waaayy up here in Canada, so count me out. Are there a few on MR planning on competing?

Yes, I am! : ) I entered the Texas Dash, one of which there was such a demand for that they had to add a 2nd day with more waves to accomodate. My race is 3.51 miles and it's more then just running, you also have to cross obstacles as you come to them....for example you have to weave around logs in a river, climb over hay bales, wooden barriers & cargo nets, climb muddy embankments, crawl under barbed wire...kind of like running a military bootcamp obstacle course. No, I don't think just doing a treadmill to prepare would be enough.

I think you have to train for overall fitness, not just the legs as, obviously it will require arm and back strength as well for climbing.
I have good arm and back strength already from kayaking for several years. I hike a lot and work out already so I do have some leg strength but I haven't been running for a long time so thats what I personally have to focus on strengthening.

Remember that it's not the destination it's the journey so winning the race is not important....it's the conditioning and participation.

Oh yeah.....there are some fun rewards too. Not only do you get to get muddy..ha!...everyone who completes the race gets a medal, t shirt and a fun & funky viking like hat. and there is a party afterwards with beer, food and live music! I'm really looking forward to this..it's going to be a lot of fun! :D

Oh, by the way....I sent Rolie the Warrior Dash site suggestion on FB and he joined the page awhile ago.....have no idea if he is going to do the race but it would be cool if he does. ...at least I would know at least one person older then me doing it! Seriously, though..there are people of all ages entering so don't let age be factor. Age is just a number and shouldn't be allowed to be a hinderence...you're as young as you feel. Believe and keep reaching. :)

Good luck on your race - I hope you have a great time!
