Dennis is still in fine voice and his stage patter sharper than ever. After hitting the stage, he asked how many were seeing him for the first time. Then he wondered..."Well, where the hell have ya been"? Regina, who was accompanying me to this show laughed and said, 'I wasn't born yet." I warned her.."Ooo, he's gonna get you.." Sure enough Dennis shouted in mock fury. "WHO SAID THEY WEREN'T BORN YET? SECURITY...."!!!
I was a bit disappointed to see that all of the recent newer tunes from his 2007 100 Years From Now CD are now gone and the show is now titled The Music of Styx with the band now duplicating the Styx lineup of two guitars...right down to new axe man August Zadra lead singing the hits originally sung by Tommy Shaw...Blue Collar Man, Too Much Time, Fooling Yourself and Renegade. It would appear he has now positioned himself in direct competition with the current touring lineup of his former band.
His lone solo tune left in the show is 1984's Desert Moon which was one of the show's highlight's for me. Regina remembered it fondly too and also enjoyed it. And a nice guitar outro on that by Jim Leahey. He and Zadra rocked things up nicely in other spots as well, particularly on Rockin' the Paradise.
Dennis set up Babe by telling us the story of the demo that evolved into a a number 1 hit and introduced his lovely wife Suzanne, now a regular presence on stage with him.
Another highlight for me was Suite Madame Blue which Dennis performed while bathed in blue light. And I really liked the cool pin point stars back drop on Light Up.
