I'll always remember Jody Stephens, drummer of Big Star, giving me a tour of Ardent Studios in Memphis back in the 90's and autographing a Big Star poster for a friend of mine. Sure would have been cool to have met Alex and was considering seeing Big Star perform in Memphis in May.

He sounded like an incredibly awesome guy; he was supposed to play SXSW this weekend so they did a tribute on NPR to him... They played 2 interviews he had done with Terry Gross from Fresh Air and he also played a couple of tunes. Beautiful melodies--reminded me a little of Neal. Terry wanted to see how he answered a question re his feelings about touring with (I can't remember how she termed it exactly) nostalgia 80s bands and he said he loved it. He got to play with people he admired back then and loved working state fairs and carnivals... I think she was surprised by that--he had no hangups about anything--even the fact they took his song and reworked it for the 70s show... He said he didn't care--it wasn't like it was sacred text or anything. He was a huge, huge fan of the Flying Burrito Brothers. I felt a real feeling of loss after the interviews besides loving The Letter. I will never forget him...
