This is the part that really is moronic:

This is the current Federal immigration statute: TITLE 8 of the US CODE. (Federal Law)

TITLE 8 > CHAPTER 12 > SUBCHAPTER II > Part IX > § 1357

§ 1357. Powers of immigration officers and employees

(a) Powers without warrant

Any officer or employee of the Service authorized under regulations prescribed by the Attorney General shall have power without warrant—

(1) to interrogate any alien or person believed to be an alien as to his right to be or to remain in the United States;

This is from Arizona’s new Immigration law SB 1070:

For any lawful contact made by a law enforcement official or a law enforcement agency of this state or a law enforcement official or a law enforcement agency of a county, city, town or other political subdivision of this state where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States, a reasonable attempt shall be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person, except if the determination may hinder or obstruct an investigation.

Federal law and the new Arizona law calls for the same thing enforcement wise... yet only when Arizona passes a law that is IDENTICAL to the 35 YEAR OLD FEDERAL LAW, do people suddenly toss the "racism" flag... or maybe is it just the sudden possibility that it will be enforced that has people crying foul now?

:!:

Why the fuck would we want that? So we can actually be legally on the hook for mexicans, instead of not being on the hook (despite the current and previous president's attempts to ignore that fact)?

Third largest U.S. public hospital close to bankruptcy, illegal aliens to blame

“When the roof is falling and people don’t take action, that bothers me,” County Commissioner Javier Souto said at a town hall meeting Thursday to describe the way the Jackson Memorial Hospital crisis is being handled.

Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, the third largest public hospital in the U.S., is $229.4 million in debt. The hospital ran out of money to pay its employees and buy medical supplies at the end of April, according to a CBS 4 article.

Souto, a county-appointed member of the Public Health Trust overseeing Jackson, explained that he is frustrated by the state government’s and federal government’s lack of action and because after going to several meetings to find a real solution, all he has seen is people arguing over who is to blame.

“The situation at Jackson now is not one of finger pointing,” Souto said. “There is a lot of blame to go around, but the moment is for solving the problem.”

Miriam Planas, who is running to replace Souto as the District 10 County Commissioner, feels that there is another issue besides blame that needs to be addressed.

“I am really shocked by the commission’s “surprise” to the situation at Jackson,” Planas said in an interview Wednesday.

Because Souto and County Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle are part of the trust that governs Jackson, Planas thinks they should have known about Jackson’s trouble, and if they didn’t, the commissioners should find out why to prevent similar surprises in the future.

“If in fact they were not aware, then it is clear they were not giving the Public Health Trust the attention it deserves,” Planas said.

Souto said Thursday that he is doing everything he can to solve the situation with Jackson and has made suggestions as to how it should be solved.

It is essential that the state get involved because the government has not paid the $90 million it owes Jackson in Medicare payments, he said.

“If the State government owes Jackson money, they need to pay them back now,” Souto said.

According to another article by CBS 4, Jackson President Eneida Roldan went to the state government on Thursday to ask for aid, and legislators told her not to expect much from them.

The federal government also needs to get involved because the growing number of uninsured are mostly immigrants, and immigration is the responsibility of the federal government, Souto said.

Playing the race card is extremely ignorant. Race has nothing to do with it. The matter at hand is illegal immigration. People can come here from Germany, Italy, Poland, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq...and, yes, even Mexico. If people think illegal immigration only happens when Mexicans cross the border they are naive. I can give you an example I am aware of. A guy from Pakistan, who has a girlfriend who has recently become a LEGAL immigrant, comes into the US on a tourist visa to visit her. He decides how much he likes it here, but realizes he can't continue to reside at the same address he was coming to visit, so he moves away to a larger city, where he gets in touch with others of his own nationality, who in turn provide him with a job running a convenience store and sponsor him as an employee. He get's a TIN #, so he can work in this country. He now has a TIN, which suffices as a social security number, even though he has long since left that employer and moved to the side of the country where he first resided. In the three years he's been here, he has established credit, gotten a driver's license, bought a car, insurance, etc. If anyone were paying attention, he is still here illegally. At least he is willing to work and pay his own way, even though the means he got and stayed here were a bit fraudulent.

I read an article toady about the effects of the Arizona boycott on bordertowns who rely on immigration sales. They were talking about how they were already enduring the recession, and now this. My response was: That's what you get for building a business around an illegal activity. If you couldn't sustain your business without the benefits of those illegal activities than you never should have been in the business in the first place...

IMO, neither party has taken control of the borders, so the states are stepping in because they are being bankrupted. Congress is the root of ALL spending & evil and this Chicago sham politician will sign anything ! Finally, Obama orders troops to the borders (1200) a drop in the bucket, but that is only because the governors of those state were going to order the Nat'l Guard in their states to their borders. The police have been outgunned by these drug cartels for years, yet politicians talk of the War on Drugs. They need to go in November. Let them eat cake, so to speak !

Bravo!! Brilliant as usual.

They watched Reaganomics destroy the economy and they're still chanting the same mantra. The really frightening part is that there are so many people who are actually going to benefit from the Obama tax cuts and health care reform but will still vote for the GOP mantra as chanted by Palin, Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity.

Still No Word on Troops to Texas-Mexico Border
http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/politics/Tro ... nswer.html

National Guard troops will be headed to the U.S.-Mexico border, but Texas is still waiting for an official answer to its request for help.

President Barack Obama has agreed to send 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S. border with Mexico. The White House said it has not decided where along the Southwest border, which includes parts of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, the troops will be deployed.

Gov. Rick Perry has sent letters to Obama, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano requesting National Guard troops for the Texas-Mexico border. Almost a year and a half after the first letter was sent, Perry hasn't received an answer.

"We've not received approval (or denial) regarding Gov. Perry's request," said Perry's spokeswoman, Katherine Cesinger, in an e-mail. "But we remain hopeful that the federal government will provide the resources we've requested, including 1,000 Title 32 National Guardsmen, to secure the Texas-Mexico border."

A spokesperson at the Department of Defense said he couldn't give more information on the status of Perry's request.

More than 300 National Guard personnel are already on the U.S.-Mexico border engaged in counternarcotics missions.

Feds Issue Terror Watch for the Texas/Mexico Border
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/05/26/te ... can-border

The Department of Homeland Security is alerting Texas authorities to be on the lookout for a suspected member of the Somalia-based Al Shabaab terrorist group who might be attempting to travel to the U.S. through Mexico, a security expert who has seen the memo tells FOXNews.com.

The Department of Homeland Security is alerting Texas authorities to be on the lookout for a suspected member of the Somalia-based Al Shabaab terrorist group who might be attempting to travel to the U.S. through Mexico, a security expert who has seen the memo tells FOXNews.com.

The warning follows an indictment unsealed this month in Texas federal court that accuses a Somali man in Texas of running a “large-scale smuggling enterprise” responsible for bringing hundreds of Somalis from Brazil through South America and eventually across the Mexican border. Many of the illegal immigrants, who court records say were given fake IDs, are alleged to have ties to other now-defunct Somalian terror organizations that have merged with active organizations like Al Shabaab, al-Barakat and Al-Ittihad Al-Islami.

In 2008, the U.S. government designated Al Shabaab a terrorist organization. Al Shabaab has said its priority is to impose Sharia, or Islamic law, on Somalia; the group has aligned itself with Al Qaeda and has made statements about its intent to harm the United States.

In recent years, American Somalis have been recruited by Al Shabaab to travel to Somalia, where they are often radicalized by more extremist or operational anti-American terror groups, which Al Shabaab supports. The recruiters coming through the Mexican border are the ones who could be the most dangerous, according to law enforcement officials.

Security experts tell FOXNews.com that the influx of hundreds of Somalis over the U.S. border who allegedly have ties to suspected terror cells is evidence of a porous and unsecured border being exploited by groups intent on wrecking deadly havoc on American soil.

The DHS alert was issued to police and sheriff’s deputies in Houston, asking them to keep their eyes open for a Somali man named Mohamed Ali who is believed to be in Mexico preparing to make the illegal crossing into Texas. Officials believe Ali has ties to Al Shabaab, a Somali terrorist organization aligned with Al Qaeda, said Joan Neuhaus Schaan, the homeland security and terrorism fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute, who has seen the alert.

An indictment was unsealed in Texas federal court earlier this month that revealed that a Somali man, Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane, led a human smuggling ring that brought East Africans, including Somalis with ties to terror groups, from Brazil and across the Mexican border and into Texas.

In a separate case, Anthony Joseph Tracy, of Virginia, who admitted to having ties to Al Shabaab, is currently being prosecuted for his alleged role in an international ring that illegally brought more than 200 Somalis across the Mexican border. Prosecutors say Tracy used his Kenya-based travel business as a cover to fraudulently obtain Cuban travel documents for the Somalis. The smuggled Somalis are believed to have spread out across the United States and remain mostly at large, court records show.

Somalis are classified by border and immigration officials as “special interest” — illegal immigrants who get caught trying to cross the Mexican border into the U.S. who come from countries that are considered a high threat to the U.S., Neuhaus Schaan explained.

DHS did not respond to multiple e-mail and phone requests for comment.

In addition to the Somali immigration issue, Mexican smugglers are coaching some Middle Eastern immigrants before they cross the border – schooling them on how to dress and giving them phrases to help them look and sound like Latinos, law enforcement sources told FoxNews.com.

“There have been a number of certain communities that have noticed this, villages in northern Mexico where Middle Easterners try to move into town and learn Spanish,” Neuhaus Schaan said. “People were changing there names from Middle Eastern names to Hispanic names.”

Security experts say the push by illegal immigrants to try to fit in also could be the realization of what officials have feared for years: Latin American drug cartels are helping jihadist groups bring terrorists across the Mexican border.

J. Peter Pham, senior fellow and director of the Africa Project at the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, said that for the past ten years there’s been suspicion by U.S. law enforcement that drug cartels could align with international terrorist organizations to bring would-be-jihadists into the U.S.

That kind of collaboration is already being seen in Africa, said Dr. Walid Phares, director of the Future Terrorism Project at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies.

“Al Qaeda could easily say, “Ok, now we want your help getting these guys into the United States,” Phares said. “Eventually the federal government will pay more attention, but there is a window of time now where they can get anyone they want to get in already.”

Experts also say the DHS alert and recent court case highlights the threat of terrorists penetrating the Mexican/Texas border — and the growing threat of Somali recruitment efforts to bring Americans of Somali descent back to Somalia for jihadist training, creating homegrown terrorists.

Pham says the DHS alert comes too late. “They’re just covering themselves for the fact that DHS has been failing to date to deal effectively with this,” he said. “They’re already here.”

Michael Weinstein, a political science professor at Purdue University and an expert on Somalia, said, “In the past year, it’s become obvious that there’s a spillover into the United States of the transnational revolutionaries in Somalia.”

“It’s something that certainly has to be watched, but I don’t think it’s an imminent threat,” he said. “This has to be put in context with people smuggling — everybody and their brother is getting into the United States through Mexico; I read last week that some Chinese were crossing, it’s just a big market.”

Pham disagrees. “The real danger is ‘something along the lines of jihadist version of ‘find a classmate,’ he said, referring to Al Shabaab’s potential to set up sleeper cells in the U.S. “Most of them rely on personal referral and association. That type of social networking is not beyond their capabilities.”

Pham says the DHS alert is too little, too late.

“This is like shutting the barn door after the horses got away,” he said.
