Smartphone Apps - recommendations?

Postby bluejeangirl76 » Wed Jun 02, 2010 1:01 am

I'm looking for... well, the title tells the story.

Specifically Droid Apps. Fun ones, utilities, whatever... I'm all set on the Facebook and Twitter apps, but what else is fun and useful? I have Google Earth but I haven't played with it yet.

(I already got the Bump app, Lynn... LOL!)

And what does anyone know about the Advanced Task Killer app? Does it work?

Help!! :o

How about this brand new one called "QuitScrewingAroundOnTheInternetAtWorkWhenYou'reSupposedToBeWorkingBeforeYouGetYourBootyFired" App. It comes highly recommended by your boss. :P

The games on Android suck so an emulator is the only way to go.

I'm fine with my choice, thank you, B.

Now either recommend some fun phone stuff, or shut the hell up.

My bump worked with my brother's droid over the weekend. So it may work with yours. He has the last droid before the incredible though. We'll have to test it out someday.

You should see if you have an official app for the Blackhawks. My Iphone has one for the Penis's and I love it!

And I just put Flixter on mine over the weekend and I think I will use that one a lot. It actually takes me to the local theaters and gives me the times of the movies as well as their synopsis. DVD releases too. You may already have that one though. I think my brother said his droid came with it. I had to add the app.

If you don't have a restaurant app, either put Urban spoon or Yelp on your phone. That's really cool when traveling.

Shazam is cool for that song you hear when you're out or on the radio and you can't figure out who it is or the name of the song

Photobucket.

I think that's it for now  I am very slow to add apps to mine. My kids want me to add games, but then my kids will have my phone all the time and wear out my battery so I have none

Oh stop it. It's a high end phone and I like it. It's user friendly and it's fast as lightening.
I came in here looking for ideas for fun apps and helpful utilities, not to argue (again!) iPhone vs. Droid.

PLEASE READ!!!

Since I got my Motorola Droid, I've absolutely loved everything about it other than the battery and the camera sucks (5mp my butt) I've also had fun with the little timewaster game apps.

The downside to that, and I never realized this, is that when you download and install these apps, the marketplace has your number now and you may be spammed via Text or phone calls.

Last fall, I recieved 3 incoming calls that I didn't recognize the number. The "+" in front of the 10 digit number should have clued me in, but I didn't realize it until after trying to answer. I heard 2 quick beeps and then a click. I thought the call got disconnected, so I went to the call log and tried to redial to see who it was. As soon as I hit the callback, the + changed to a 011. I quickly hung up.

I called Verizon to make sure I just didn't get charged for anything and they said they saw nothing on the screen for incoming or outgoing calls via international and not to worry. I recieved 2 more "+" calls from different numbers and I made sure not to answer. I then called Verizon back again and they told me that they see nothing on their logs for incoming or outgoing calls, but they transfered me to a tech.

After he looked into things on their end, he had asked me a few questions. I then informed him that I did get a weird text message one day while reading a local news site on my phone. The text came in and said "Thanks For Visiting My Site" Where the hell did that come from? He looked into that text and it's origin and found that it had come from a marketplace type store and he asked if I had downloaded any Apps from there. We then realized what has happened. When you download and install their Apps, you have to click YES to a series of questions to get the App installed. By doing so, they have access to your phone and it's NUMBER!!!!!

I downloaded these Games and other Usefull apps

ABSOLUTE MUST GET:

Advanced Task Killer FREE... This app will turn off all the unnecessary crap running in the background on your phone and prolong your battery charge. My phone was dying quickly until I got this app.

Useful Apps:

10001 Cocktails (Recipes for all sorts of concoctions)

Bartender (Same as above)

Color Flashlight

Droid Light <--- VERY Useful

Food Finder (Finds restaurants by either your location, OR it will look them up by what you want to eat, IE Seafood, Mexican, Chinese, etc...)

Have2Eat (Finds nearby restaurants as well, but the other is more useful)

Guitar Tuner (useful for when you dont have one handy)

Kreac Calculator

Noble Fart (like a portable whoopie cushion)

Robotic Guitarist (Helps you figure out chords. There are 6 strings on the screen and you pluck/strum them to sound them out)

Shazam (Hold up the phone to the radio to figure out a song you may not know the title or artist)

Games:

AlphaMixr

Bic Concert Lighter (flick the BIC on the screen for a "lighter")

Bubble Maze

Chess

ConnectFour

Hangman Classic

Jewellust Lite (Kind of like Jewel Quest)

Jewels (just like above)

Labrynth Lite (a ball bearing tilt maze)

Magic 8-Ball

Marbles Solitaire (I played this as a kid and still love it)

Memory

Nintaii Lite (just like this game http://www.miniclip.com/games/bloxorz/en/)

Pinball

Real Blackjack

SuperYatzy

TiltMazes

Traffic Jam

Video Poker Lite

Word Drop (Fun and addicting game, although it doesn't know every word)

YahtC Classic

I spelled these exactly like they are on my phone. Some games you'll see are basically knock-offs of real games so they can't use the same spelling as the licensed game does, although they do come up in the search feature when you type them in the real way.

I've read about this one, that's why I asked for personal experience with it. Thanks!!

Useful Apps:

Shazam (Hold up the phone to the radio to figure out a song you may not know the title or artist)

I was with Lynn when she used this app for something that was playing in the bar at MRF... I knew right away I would need it!!

Games:
Jewellust Lite (Kind of like Jewel Quest)

Jewels (just like above)

I love Jewel Quest!! I looked for a Bejeweled app for droid and didn't find one.

Labrynth Lite (a ball bearing tilt maze)

Phone came with one of those called "Teeter"... same thing I think. Addicting though. LOL

What's Traffic Jam?

And THANKS, T... will look some of these up!!

http://www.trapster.com

Trapster is a social networking mobile application and website, provided for free, that maps out and alerts users in real time to the presence of live police speed traps, red light cameras, speed cameras, and areas where police often hide. In addition, it allows users to record trip data and share it via the web, including interfaces with Facebook and Twitter. Trapster was recognized by Time Magazine as one the 10 Best iPhone Apps for Dads in June 2009, and as one of the 20 Sexist Apps for Men by iSmashPhone.com in July 2009. In addition, Wired listed Trapster as the number 1 application in their 10 Mobile Applications that Make the Most of Location and CNET named Trapster as their number 1 free iPhone automotive app.

Trapster's moblie GPS app currently supports iPhone OS, BlackBerry OS, Windows Mobile OS, Android OS, Palm WebOS, S60, and unlocked Java ME phones with GPS. In addition to these mobile phones, Trapster has support for both Garmin and TomTom navigation units.

Traffic jam looks just like a traffic jam. Your car is in one spot and the exit is in another. You have to figure out which cars to slide where to open the way for your car to drive out. Its ok, but does get boring after a while

The TiltMazes game is addicting too. Its not really a maze though. You have to roll your ball over and collect a bunch of spots, and they have to be done in a certain order or you get trapped. Its free... give it a try

There are a few versions of the task killers out there. The one I mentioned is the best one from my experience. The others killed some apps, but not all the unnecessary ones.

You click the little robot guy icon, hit Kill Selected Apps, and its done. It turns off the background stuff that you may have used recently. If you hit the home button in the middle of another app, its still running in the background. My battery life with average use was 12-16 hours at best. Using the task killer, its 24 or more unless I'm using the internet a lot or lots of games or something. If I'm not using the phone for net or games, it'll last 2 days or so.
